I want to dip dye my ends. I am thinking that I want to do purple. I do not want to bleach my ends. I REFUSE to bleach my hair. Is Sun In the same as bleach?

Okay then! lol! A have a very, very, very dumb question. Is their a "safe" way to bleach. I really want to change my look.

Sun in would probably do more damage than bleach because it's only meant to add highlights to hair that is naturally light. So you'd dry your hair out for minimal results.

If you want to lighten your hair naturally try honey. It's a gradual lightener, but you can mix it with cinnamon (be careful so the cinnamon it doesn't get on your scalp) and distilled water so it happens a little faster.

Other than that I think actual bleach or professional quality color is the safest way because you can control the results knowing it will do the job.

Is your hair relaxed? And are you just trying to add highlights, go blonde, a few shades lighter or what?

I tried sun in as a teen and it dyed my hair permanently. It didn't wash out after X amount of washes. My so called highlights were kinda patchy.

It didn't damage my hair, but I think you should go to a professional.

Oddly, sun in never changed my hair color. did a good job of turning it to straw, though. That was over 25 years ago now. IDK if their formula is better since then.

Is your hair relaxed?

If not then your best bet is to bleach it and then use something like manic panic. I did blue highlights this way and my curl pattern did not change one bit and my hair is fine. Bleach can be scary, but trying to get your hair to a level 10 or so without it can be even more damaging.

If you're relaxed then bleach would probably = hair in the sink :/ sorry

All my white friends have used sun in at some pt and they all said its the worst. If you do anything like another colour on top of that, it tends to breaks off.

I've only ever heard bad things about it

Don't do it
Dip dye looks horrible imo. And why dye the most damaged part of your hair?

But who am I to judge..
Instead try chalking (google it) its using chalk to 'dye' your hair
if not try kool aid (dont know how its spelt sorry, I'm from England), just have a look around youtube and pinterest for colours and recepies

i used sun in years ago, and it permanently damaged the ends of my hair. My hair was breaking so badly from the "chemical cuts" it eventually caused. On top of that, I was relaxed. It was a disaster. I had to chop it basically all off and start over. I would not recommend! Honey and even certain teas are definitely a better, all natural, solution.

I used Sun-In as a teen too, it didn't damage my hair, but it did get my hair lighter, it got lighter and kept getting lighter until I had to dye it back to a dark brown.

ETA: I recommend getting some professional advice and researching online before you do anything, maybe get a consultation with a salon that specialises in colouring, if you get them to breakdown how they would go about the process, that will give you an idea of what you would need to do to achieve your desired results, I know you ain't got no time for any setbacks for 2013
