Damp hair for the summer

During the summer last year, I cowashed every day because I was taking swim classes. I would comb and pull my hair back in a pony tail and let the sun do it's thing. I noticed I had more growth than usual. I know the cowashing helped but I also think leaving it damp contributed to the growth.
I am looking to do that again this year. Any suggestions for a light conditioner that does not leave hair feeling sticky after it dries.

I love Redken Butter Treat. I cowashed and used this daily for months and it lasted quite a while, maybe 8 months. :yep: Damp my hair felt a little weird but it dried very soft and moisturized. Cowashing is awesome for length retention, depending upon how you style afterwards (I bunned for most of the time).

I was wondering if this made your hair feel really soft.

The cowashing helped retain length because I saw less shedding. I think the damp hair along with the humidity kept my hair moisturized.

Thinking about trying for 6 - 8 weeks.
Did you cowash with moisture or protein conditioners.

I have never cowashed before.
Wet the hair
Put in conditioner
Rinse out??

Are these the steps

I use moisture conditioners. I soak my hair, put in the conditioner, comb it through and rinse out. At the end of the week I shampoo and DC.

Well the butter treat is the ish....I love it, it's a staple of mine, as for co-washing with it, I don't know....but I was going to do a co-wash myself of the whole summer or until my next touch up which is in Aug.......but I'm not sure about a conditioner though......have u tried V05 moisturizing conditioner? I notice my hair grew faster being damp in the spring and summer time.....if I think of any conditioners, I'll let u know......oh yea, thought about using Wen?

I use moisture conditioners

I use the WEN cleansing conditioners..does anyone have any insight as to if this would work well too for co-washes? Its a cleansing conditioner, so I am worried that it might strip my hair?? I am bunning for the next four months...but I'd like to try this after....

I cowash 3 times a week and I use a leave in after every cowash. I shampoo wash at least every 2 weeks.

I've been thinking about it for a while - I might try cowashing everyday during the summer too (even though summer lasts about 2 months or less in the UK, lol). I will cowash with either a light protein or moisturising conditioner and make sure I still DC 2ce a week, as I do already.

Thanks OP for sharing.

Question, after you co-wash - do you still use a leave-in condition? I'm going to try this in summer and see how it works.

Wow, this sounds like my story last summer. I finally learned how to swim!!

I cowashed everytime I took swim lessons (several times/week). I would use the Butter Treat (Redken), then put some oil on it (you know the cheap Olive Oil for $.99 in the BSS), and pull back into a bun and let the sun dry it. If I remembered to put it in my bag, I would put a little Wet from Sebastian. My hair does much better in the warmer weather when it's wet, than in the colder weather. You're right, the growth is really good too!

I tried a lot of different cons, but the Redken Butter Treat seemed to do the trick and Ulta had small sizes that fit perfectly in my gym bag.

I will give Redken a try. I thought my hair thrived in the winter but I am starting to notice it's the summer months that I receive the most growth.

@ Neijon - Congratulations of learning to swim!:clap: That is my plan this summer. I can basically swim and I know several strokes, but I need to get comfortable with treading (sp?) water and being in the deep end. I really love the water and I think it's time I become a confident swimmer.

@ both Junonia and Neijon - Did you do anything to your hair while swimming to protect it? Three summers ago (pre-LHCF) I took swim lesson 3 times a week and my hair broke off badly! Also it sounds like you don't shampoo after you swim?! Isn't that bad, don't you need to get the chlorine out with a clarifying/swimmers shampoo?

The first time I coated my hair with conditoner and put the swim cap over it. However, when I started swimming, the conditioner dripped in my hair and my eye was on fire. After I finished swim, I made sure to rinse my hair with warm water and saturate my hair with condish. I didn't use shampoo but I think I used so much condish that it stopped any breakage.

I cowash everyday right now because I work out a lot. I use Wella Kolestral in the big white jar. It works like a charm. After I rinse that out, I use Rusk Deep Shine Sea Kelp Conditioner as a leave in. I just rub in a little to help smooth my hair down. I make my bun and go. Like you, I take the bun down at night and I let it air dry.
This has worked like a charm for me. I forgot just how good Wella Kolestral could be. It's cheap, you get a lot of it, and it doesn't have an overpowering smell.

co-signing on the Butter Treat. It's my favorite to use on wet hair after CW'ing. Leaves hair soft and smells so good:lick:. I sometimes use it as a daily moisturizer on dry hair too.

I am so happy the weather is getting warmer so I can go back to my cowashing and buns. I use Suave Humectant as a moisturizer. I co wash, rinse and apply Suave Humectant and seal with coconut oil. Hair grows like weeds. :yep:

My hair is so thick it stays damp in the middle but I co wash every other day when its hot so it not a problem.

I like Oyin Juice and Berries Moisturizing spray and it smells amazing.

This is what I plan to use this spring & summer. I hope it works out. I do have back ups too. My hair is quite thick and it remains damp until I let the bun down at night.

I did the same thing. I rinsed my hair really well and used a lot (A LOT!) of con and washed my hair like it was shampoo and it worked out really well. My hair grew alot and I was close to approaching BSL. However, I didn't take as good care these past few months and wound up with alot of split ends, uneven hair, and a lot of shedding. I had to cut my hair 3 inches last Saturday. :wallbash:

BTW, I tried some shampoos that were specifically for swimmers. But, they really dried out my hair. It was similar to the effect of using too much clarifying shampoo and not using a con after. The con wash worked great! I'm not sure why my hair grew so much over those months. It was either the repeated con washes (3/wk) or not using any heat or a combo of the two. Either way, I'm going back to that routine probably this week or next. I like to flat iron my hair, but I think I'll go back to flat ironing it once a month or once every 6 weeks. Curly hair goes well with summer weather anyway! I miss those 3 inches!!:lachen:

I did my FIRST co-wash in the middle of a work day today!! I always had the fear that if I cowashed then I couldn't come back to sit at my desk at work- I thought my hair was too crazy for that! Well today, I didn't care how I'd look- I went running on my lunch break then cowashed in the shower. Guess what? I just applied some leave-in and moisturizer, bunned, and then went to my merry way! I'm at my desk now enjoying my damp hair and my hair doesn't look straight CRAZY!!!!!!! YAYYYYY ME! This is a keeper for the summer!!!!!

I use the WEN nearly daily; it doesn't strip my hair at all. My hair has never felt better :yep:
