My Brother Said.....(Don't Get Mad)

Especially since starting this hair journey and washing 2 x each week, I've had compliments from about how fresh my hair smells. I love my hair being and smelling fresh too and find myself sniffing it from time to time. :yep: It's probably why men seem to love the Victoria Secret conditioner, as mentioned in the threads here. Men are mainly visual creatures but smells to come into play when attached to something they consider sensual. ;)

Girl, that conditioner has a spell on me too. hehe!

Can't be mad at that. Its true. Even when we do wash, after styling, that heat smell is what alot of black women are left with. I love my co wash days. When i got it blown out and flat ironed last week, I couldnt wait to wash that out my hair

Nice smelling hair can get you into trouble. I used to love Salon Selectives because it smelled so good. The scent lasted forever.

I remember in college I was walking across the quad and I ran into a friend and her boyfriend. When she introduced us, he gave me a hug and started talking about how good my hair smelled. I could see her giving me the look as I tried to pry myself loose and get out of arm's reach.

Another time I was sitting in class and a guy said, "Your hair just looks like it smells good."

If a product smells bad, I can't use it.

BF "You just washed ur hair didnt u?"

Then he chases me until we fall down and he starts sniffing my hair LOL

I wash my hair every week to every 2 weeks but I deep condition with keracare humecto in the tub. He LOVES it. One time he sniffed my hair and was like "Its wearing off..." Such a dork. But I love him

Yes this is true!

But I think the problem is that most of the products for black hair doesn't smell good, I wash my hair twice a week, after I condition it it smells so good (especially when I use the Keracare line) but the problem is the moisturizer, that's why I don't use anymore ORS Olive oil, just because of the smell.

But I agree when you say a lot of black women don't wash their hair often, especially when they wear a weave or braids :ohwell:

:lachen:Yes, YES! I thought I was the only one that remembered my past fellas like that. ITA that I love the smell of fresh hair. Before I was into hair care I use to febreeze my wigs! :yep:

:lachen::lachen:

This guy I used to go out with was around me one time I had gotten my hair pressed.

Guy says to me: "Oh wow, you got your hair done. Did they use a pressing comb to get it straight like that?"

I say to guy: "Yes, the stylist used a straight comb initially to get it straight after blow drying it."

Guy says to me: "That's what I thought, cuz your hair has that burnt smell like my sister's hair used to have when she used to get it pressed all the time when she was little."

Me: :perplexed:sad:

:lachen::lachen: I hate the smell of pressed hair.

Girl what do you use to make your hair smell like coconuts and berries???

I use the coconut conditioner by Suave. And I have a perfume called Nikita Lempicka and I spray it a few times and walk into the mist. I think it's the combo of both that he's smelling :lachen:.

I, too, agree. My ex thought it was disguisting that I could go month (with braids) without washing my hair. Heck! I thought it was disgusting. So, I stopped wearing them and co-wash every single day. Sometimes twice a day. Nothing is nastier to me than washing your body and not washing your hair. I used to be so curious of non-black women because my mother always said you cannot wash your hair everyday. Now, I know better...:nono:

He's right and I aint even a man :nono:

Smells in general rub me the right or wrong way. It's something about a place or person void of any smell that doesn't sit well with me. I realize A LOT of folks are allergic to perfumes and that's understood, but it does something for DH when I smell like berries, cucumber, peaches and whatever else Bath & Body Works can dream up.

The hair is no exception. That was one of my first comments...I said something to the affect that I was jealous that other races could wash their hair daily. When I got onto the elevator with them I could smell the freshness of something fruity.

My hair still doesn't smell as fresh because I don't co wash daily and I use oils and what-nots that detract from the fresh smell, but I make up for with body butters/lotions or whatever.

Never underestimate the power of (good) food and (good) smells on a man

ITA!!!

I agree with him. I was working last night and some white girls left the fitting room. It smelled like Herbal essences in the room. At that moment, I was envious. I agree with your brother OP.

I learned at an early age you can get your hair wet all the time when braids are in your hair. When I was a kid we got braids everytime before we went on family vacations trips to Florida resorts, beachs, Texas waterparks or other resort w/ pools. And me and my 2 sisters could get our braids wet 24/7 without my mom doing all our hair on those fun trips. We were just told to wash our hair after we came back from the pools or beachs. We would run out of shampoo & conditioner all the time. I will never forget we entered a resturant and sat at a table one time and a waitress complimented us on how good we smelled. Thermasilk conditioner smell was the bomb.

My hair always smelled like conditioner and my leave ins when I wear braids. I always washed my hair every two or three nights with braids in. That is why I get so much growth with braids. My DH has a strong sense of smell and when I wear braids he sniffs my hair all the time b/c they hold the conditioner smell longer and Infusium 23 scent and other products.

Also my husband knows when braids are in my hair he can throw me in the pool anytime.

It surprises me when people tell me they don't wash their braids...:nono:

Man, I miss Thermasilk Conditioner......

I didnt get past the first page so somebody might've already said this but black women can't wash their hair as much as other races because our hair needs it natural oils. Other races i.e white, spanish dont need that which is why their hair smells like dogs if they dont wash it everyday. Thats the difference. Fresh shampooed hair does smell nice though, but I know I cant wash everyday. :nono:

If I could wash everyday I would...Right now my schedule only permits 1-2x a week. I remember my stinky hair days all too vividly and SO has been with me pre and post LHCF and he's complemented me post LHCF but never before...but he never said anything. I guess he just didn't want to offend me:lachen: because I know it was bad, especially with braids!

That is the point, most of us and even people of other races do not use shampoo regularly. Alot of people use conditioner, to provide the oils that could be lost. We as black women can do it, if it works for us.

This isn't true... I cowash my hair everyday...sometimes twice a day depending on wether I exercise or not. I do cardio about 3 times a week and I use shampoo on those days. Otherwise I just cowash. Washing my hair has not in any way caused excessive dryness. Also, using a mild shampoo reduces the chances of it stripping the natural oils from your hair.

I've been hooked to co-washing the last 3 months....Well my brother told me he loved that and wish his wife would start it as well ( my sister in-law is black)....
Then he goes on to say that is the one thing other women in other races have over black women...My first reaction was to get upset....He goes on to say black women hair doesn't stink or anything ...it just doesn't have that fresh clean shampooed smell...
He went on to say that is a weak spot for most men.....he said he'll be in a grocery store and a women walks by and her hair smells good .....she got his attention....He said it's something about that fresh shampooed smell
Why does my husband feel the same way.....

What do you guys think??????????

It's true. I will admit before I joined LHCF, I never washed my hair because I was scared I would mess my hair up from the trip at the salon. When I joined this site and started washing my hair, my SO said bout time, I was tired of smelling your hair:perplexed:rolleyes: (yes he did say that:yep:) Now my hair smells so good, that men always comment on my hair:grin:

Why is that? Many of them smell like some sort of chemical candy or overripe fruit :perplexed

I use a lot of Indian herbals, and DH does not care for their smell. My cowash conditioners are decent at doing away with the herb smells, and then he is all up in my hair.

Lol. I can't wait until i'm fully natural so i can co-wash more often. I actually some times aussie hair insurance in my hair for a nice smell.
This reminded me of the time i mixed tea tree oil and castor and applied to my flaky scalp. Well i put too much tea tree oil in and the next day i could just smell tea tree oil lingering around me. I had at lecture at uni as well and i felt ashamed that i smelt of tea tree oil so much. :lachen: this was just last year as well lol.

Since I've been cowashing regularly, I've received so many scalp massages and head sniffs from men it's crazy, but I love it!

no offense taken by that. I can't help but notice black girls in my class with dirty dandruffy looking hair from all that petroleum grease and once monthly washes.

I can't go 2 days without co-washing, washing, or even wetting my hair nowadays. :drunk: I love to touch my hair during the day, bring my hand up to my nose and take in the scent of suave humectant and garnier conditioner. Can't wait till my hair's long enough to actually put my hair up to my nose. :lick:

and the packaging isn't very attractive. I know thats OT but just wondering if anyone else noticed this.

Not surprised. All my exes (all of them Black men except 2-one white, one Latino) loved the smell of freshly washed hair...one in particular would be all up in the neck area if I came over to his house with freshly co-washed hair. Then he wanted to run his fingers thru it... I personally love the smell of freshly co-washed hair, but right now the frequent washing isn't my thing since I'm on a low-manip challenge. There were times I'd CW daily, and boy did I love that so fresh, so clean sensation!

We had a meeting the other day and this guy leaned over to whisper something to me and was like 'Damn, your hair smells good!!!' :giggle: He kept telling other dudes to come smell me.

I agree as well. When I was cowashing a lot last summer, a male coworker would always comment on the fruity smell of my hair. He wasn't sniffing my hair or anything...the smell of the conditioner overwhelmed my cubicle space (in a good way).

I can't wait for the summer to start cowashing again! :)
