OK I'm convinced MSM is toxic in some way!

Probably 2 months back i made a post that Id be jumping back on the MSM bandwagon, I had forgotten why i got off it other than the weight loss i thought it gave me. I forgot about the menstrual changes
that it caused ( i looked back at some old postings i made). My mistake for taking it again lol. It messed up my cycle so so badly, I was about 6 days late. It felt as tho i never ovulated ( i usually have some symptoms) sorry if TMI lol. I just cant imagine why it would cause these effects! Perhaps it screwed up my hormones, which could be detrimental in some unknown way (fertility, even cancers etc..) whatever it is , it cannot be good and I'd be wary about using this stuff, i think the health of my body is worth so much more than any miniscule change this might or might not cause in my hair:nono:. Please seriously consider all dangers b4 using supplements of any kind........

Wow! Sorry to hear that you have so much trouble with MSM. How long did you use it before you gave up on it? I did read that MSM does have a "regulating" effect on your hormones. What that scientifically equates to I'm not sure, but I know I had a few initial "adjusting" side effects for the first couple of months. But after that I began to gradually see good changes. Now I see great changes. I experienced really bad body pains during PMS that have all but vanished. Even 800 mg of Motrin did not totally alleviate my pain, and at times it was debilitating and I had to take off from work. This never, ever happens anymore. Same with my bad right knee, which I had for many years, and my allergies symptoms. Learning about MSM has truly been a blessing to me. I'm planning on getting some books about it cause I really want to know what a "proper" dose is and exactly how it works chemically. Amazon has some good ones. I will say that most people will have to go through a detoxing and "regulating" phase before they will see any benefits from MSM. The breakouts for me were most major and lasted the longest, but since I knew it could potentially happen I just stuck it out. It was definitely worth it. Maybe reading up more on MSM would help alleviate some of your concerns.

ETA: I really believe it's our bodies that are toxic....MSM is a detoxifier.

I agree. I took that stuff, once I took to much, and i was like a nervous wreck! I took it again, and the same thing happened.

K, I waited a month and took a tiiiiiny bit. Girl, that stuff made me feel like I was on the hood of a car with a bad engine ! I was shaking alllll day ! I was soooooo nervous like ! I took some calming medication to ease it, that crap just kept on going.

Sorry, I will NNNNEEEEEEVA take that stuff again! However my body manufactures it, is how I'll get it.

My health is waaaaay to important. ^5

I think that MSM has some plant estrogen in it. This could have caused your cycle to go crazy.

The same thing happened to me. I have endometriosis so any extra estrogen is bad for my body.

How does the fact that MSM lengthened your cycle, which most women would love (at least I would), and decreased PMS symtoms, again something most women would love, make it a toxic or dangerous thing?

Did I miss something?

I had no problems with MSM until about two months ago. When my period was late I immediately stopped taking all supplements including biotin and a super b complex vitamin. My period didn't come until late last week. I think I'm going to leave all these vitamins alone. Extra hair growth is not worth my health.

I've been wondering about MSM too. It seems to give me an aweful headache, but I know that's a sometimes a symptom of detox (from the Master Cleanse). I'm only taking 500mg, and I cannot understand why some people are taking anything over 1000mg. What are the benefits of taking so much? Does more MSM= more growth and softenss? I don't think I will ever take more than 500mg.

My cycle has never been regular without hormonal BC, so I don't think I'll really notice anything about MSM in that area.

I had to leave MSM alone too, it made me have stomach problems for some reason. But my skin never looked better. It cleared my acne completely.

Someone was explaining to me the other day that vitamins and pills are synthetic material and sometimes our bodies don't react to them well because our body sees it as something poison for the body to get rid of, hence why we are told to take medicines and pills with food. I just think some of us cannot easily trick our bodies into accepting some of these things so it ends up making us feel ill.

You tooo! i don't know if it was the msm but I sensed that it could've been the reason I was cramping a few days ago after coming off my cyle almost three weeks ago. :nono:

So, I am going to nix them even though I wasn't taking much but I will just use the ones in my Ultra Nourish hair and I sensed the Holy spirit telling me not to take as much MSM as I had been which wasn't nearly as much as some women on here take.

I too will never take MSM again regularly. I only took it for around a month, but once I realized that it was messing up my cycle I let it go in a hurry. I want healthy hair, but I'm not willing to risk it :nono:. I can have healthy hair w/o MSM.

I think MSM makes my stomach cramp violently (it's not mestrual related either)--it was just a SEVERE Pain:perplexed..I cant even explain it--I'm just going to continue my B12 and Biotin..and of course my hair vitamin.

I think it's a good idea to post which ones you guys had reactions to. Different qualities of vitamins is what I'm thinking it could be. Even though every system is different, it could be a specific brand or quality of msm. I take GNC's hair skin and nails and the msm in it is low in comparison to what other women on this board take. I tried another hair vitamin with MSM from Natrol and it tore my skin up, made me sick, and made me itch. :ohwell:

I think MSM is the best thing since fried chicken. My asthma is basically non-existant, my allergies are pretty much gone, my skin cleared, I have fewer cramps, and my memory improved. I had a few discomforts initially, but IMO it was my body being cleaned out, not because MSM. It takes about a year for the body to recuperate from all the damage we've done to it over the years, and perhaps for some of us, it would have taken a little longer to see progress. I do understand some not wanting to take chances, though.

LMAO :lachen::lachen: U ain't right! hahahaha But I definitely agree. I stopped when I went on vacation (forgot to take them) and let me say that my allergies, dry skin, and stiff creaky joints came back. So I'm back on them and I'm noticing a big difference (yay!)

:amen: That's exactly why, when it made my cramps worse, I modified the dosage instead of stopping.

I know how you feel. I had been taking MSM for 3 months. The whole time I was taking it, I only had a monthly cycle once! (TMI, I know...sorry).:perplexed Anyway, I kept taking it (thinking it would stop eventually as my body regulated itself)...but it never regulated. Finally, I finished the bottle, last week, and umm, I have a "visitor" coming today. It took a week for my body to fix itself. Umm, MSM scares me and I probably won't be taking it again.

Sorry about the OP's and other's bad experience.

MSM has been great for me. I followed the instruction by slowly increasing my amount and I drink lots of water with it. Den1 said she put it in her water bottle and drink it all day. That has helped me out greatly. I used to take it like a shot and hope I had consumed enough water. The Den1 technique made it much easier and I haven't experienced any set backs.

MSM has been great for my joints, skin, and hair. My fitness trainers are even taking it and raving about the improvements in their health. They are supplement gurus.

Again, sorry about all the bad experiences. Its amazing what is good for one body is not for another.

I had the odd experience of it worsening my joint pain. I really couldn't believe it, but I went off of it and the pain reduced or went away completely. I went on it again and the pain came back. This happened a few times. So I finally just stopped taking it and things have been much better since.

I wonder if this is what is happening to me.:perplexed I've been taking MSM off and on for about 2 years but it really hasn't done anything for my joints. I'm going to take a break and go back to flaxseed.

MSM didn't really do too much for me until I started taking more vitamin C with it. After that, I experienced everything that everyone was raving about.

Girl, I wonder what's THAT all about ? It usually always interrupts or changes these ladies cycles....I wonder why?

Does anyone know if it really has estrogen? Because with fibroids and other things going on, I do NOT need ANY more estrogen, lawd no ! lololol

I started taking it with OJ but still didn't see any benefits. I'll probably give it another try in a few months.

I was taking the Solgar brand 3000 mg a day(pill). It seemed like every week felt like the week before my cycle(i.e. cramping, annoyed w/ every little thing, can't focus etc.) I started only taking 1000 mg a day. Maybe it's the brand -- plus I haven't taken that much Vitamin C with it.:ohwell:

MSM worked for me and I actually have clearer skin, healthier joints and better hair for it, but I would not have continued taking it if I had the reaction you described, it's good you stopped!! :nono:

I asked my uncle, he's a Dr. He says it's not toxic, but depending on the state of your hormones and other factors MSM can cause some of the effects you mentioned including altering your hormonal balance. That is an extreme reaction and it's good that you stopped taking it. It does have detoxing effects on the body, but what you described was beyond the norm of purging acne or headaches often described in the initial stages of detox.

It's always important to keep in mind that what works for one person may not work for another. We all have different chemistry, medical history, varying diets/prescription medicine and hormone levels that can play a role in how our body reacts to certain things including natural supplements.

I was about to post the very same thing.

Ladies you can also purchase MSM that already has vitamin C in it...Vitamin C helps MSM to absorb better. :yep:
