Why does the hair seem more moist after a perm?

I notice that, after relaxing my hair, it seems more moisturized.

Why is that so? Does the relaxer somehow allow water to deeper penetrate the hair?

Maybe you're low porosity and the basic ph of the relaxer help to lift the cuticles of your hair. This allow the water to penetrate deeper in the cortex.
