What are see through ends?

I've heard a couple people say that they can tell when their ends are damaged b/c they can see through them. What does that mean/look like?

It's when your roots and the rest of your hair length is thicker than the ends. The ends would look kinda stringy and blah.

Also, for some like me, the ends are a different color than the rest of the hair. i.e. a lighter shade that's a little transparent.

My hair is naturally dark auburn and my ends sometimes turn blonde or reddish orange

Hey girl,

Sadly I was the see through ends QUEEN!! I wish I could post my Fotki pic for you, but it keeps coming out a little red X so....

Basically all the ladies that answered, answered you right. My ends were nice and thick from roots to nape of neck. My hair was in between my shoulder blades and all of that was literally see through. Like, you could see my shirt. So I cut all that off to start over.

because at least I don't have those damaged ends hanging around.
