Seborrheic dermatitis, Dandruff, Dry Scalp & Natural Hair How do you wear your hair??

Re: Seborrheic dermatitis, Dandruff, Dry Scalp & Natural Hair How do you wear your ha

randi415 I think it's working . . . I'm not going to hang my hat on it just yet. It's too soon to really say for sure.

I have really tight coils, I have what I call wash 'n go nowhere soon hair :lachen: I've taken the opportunity to try some curl products this month, I've also taken the opportunity to really condition my hair. You know since I have to put honey on my scalp for 3 hours, I might as well put some conditioner on my hair at the same time.

What I've been doing is applying the honey to my scalp in the evenings (& sometimes conditioner to the length of my hair), rinsing or washing then putting flat twist in my hair to twist out in the morning. Some days I pin it up unless it looks really cute, then I'd wear my hair out.

Please keep in touch especially if you decide to try the honey.

I think I'm gonna start this honey treatment on my son. He has locks and have been scratching his head like mad. I think he may have SD as well.

Re: Seborrheic dermatitis, Dandruff, Dry Scalp & Natural Hair How do you wear your ha

Snuckles I am going to start tomorrow (applying every other day) I gotta get one more day out of this TO lol. Plus I'm starting a very strict diet and work out routine that I'm trying to stick to for 30 days so I'll need to wash more often anyway.

Do you only have issues w/ your scalp? My SD is bad on my scalp, face, and sometimes my chest. I asked because I was wondering if your using coconut oil to moisturize your face. One of the links I read said something about applying a very small amount of coconut oil to moisturize. I'm going to give it a try.

Re: Seborrheic dermatitis, Dandruff, Dry Scalp & Natural Hair How do you wear your ha

randi415 it's mostly on my scalp. I do have some patches on my eyebrows that act up when my scalp is out of control. The patches on my eyebrows went away quickly after applying the honey treatment a handful of times.

I did see the mention of coconut oil but haven't really used it on my face.

Good luck, I hope this works well for you.

Re: Seborrheic dermatitis, Dandruff, Dry Scalp & Natural Hair How do you wear your ha

I don't know what I have on my scalp, but I now can't really use many products these days. It's like I developed an allergy over the years to something and I don't know what it is. My scalp use to get itching fits with severe flaking and pimple like things on my scalp from time to time. Most clarifying shampoos an cleansers (natural and commercial) would make me itch something fierce. I used cortisol spray/cream and antibacterial cream on my scalp and they helped some. After a while, I got tired of using them.

Right now, I'm using a gentle shampoo bar with tree tea oil, castor oil, and grapeseed oil. I haven't used the shampoo bar in weeks since I'm just rinsing my hair and scalp extremely well in only water. My scalp is currently doing fine. I'm glad this thread popped up. I've been meaning to go to an allergist or dermatologist to check out my scalp and back. I think I'll save up some copayment funds and go visit a specialist this summer.

Re: Seborrheic dermatitis, Dandruff, Dry Scalp & Natural Hair How do you wear your ha

Oh, I rinse my hair every few days with water underneath the shower and apply a bit of the oil mixture as needed. So far, my hair and scalp are doing fine. I usually wear twists, buns made from twists, or twist outs.

So its been 12 days since I started the honey treatments and I do believe it's working! The first week I didn't see or feel any changes, it didn't get any worse but didn't seem to be getting any better. I am now starting to see positive results. My scalp looks and feels great my face is showing some progress but the results are not as good as my scalp yet. I still have some dry, flaky patches on my face but they are less severe.

Re: Seborrheic dermatitis, Dandruff, Dry Scalp & Natural Hair How do you wear your ha

I have SB on my scalp and FACE and it's under control after years of trying to find the right combination of product. My derm recommended T-SAL shampoo not T-Gel. I put it in a color application bottle in order to apply it directly to my scalp and I would only apply it to the areas that were irritated (for me this was the crown of my head). Sometimes I would add tea tree oil to my shampoos, put it in a color application bottle, and apply to scalp. That made my scalp feel WONDERFUL!!!

Also, I work out frequently and I found it imperatively that I keep my scalp clean. Yes, that means co-washing! Also, I tried to stay away from braids during cold weather or keeping them for too long. Once again, you can't really clean your scalp with braids. Lastly, when I had a hair analysis done, she recommended putting rice bran oil on my scalp for about five minutes, before shampooing my hair. This only had to be done once a week.

I'm still doing the honey treatments but I'm going to cut back to maybe 2x a week. The treatments are working very well but my edges are thinning. I don't know if it's from the honey or the manipulation every other day. This kinda sucks, I hope it continues to work.

Re: Seborrheic dermatitis, Dandruff, Dry Scalp & Natural Hair How do you wear your ha

My 15 yo daughter has SD: This is a long read

Since March 17th Ive started “greasing”her scalp once or twice a week (the day her hair is styled and then again the day before a shampoo day. I might do it in the middle of the week if needed) with Qhemet Biologics amla and olive that Ive mixed with a heaping tsp of sublimed sulfur (finer hair might need to use the burdock root cream. When her hair is straightened, I will use the burdock root cream mixed with sulfur because its lighter and I don’t want to weigh her hair down)

On the day her hair is loosend after a protective style take down, I apply homemade 5 % sulfur to her scalp and let it sit for 15-30 mins ( I don’t add a cap or massage the oil in): It works best applied to the scalp after the “grease” has sat for a day or so. I tried using this exclusively, but Ive found its not strong enough breakdown the buildup. The sulfur odor is covered with the fragrance of the Qhemet cream. I mix the ingredients in a glass jar and then let it sit for a few 7 days. I then transfer it to a fine tipped color applicator bottle. I shake before and during application because the sulfur settles on the bottom. I don’t use this oil if her hair is in a protective style. The qhemet grease works just fine alone.
1 heaping tsp of sulfur added to 4oz of oil:
2 oz castor oil, 1 oz sunflower oil, ½ oz jojoba oil, ¼ oz EACH: bhringraj oil (the one with sesame oil) and apricot oil. I shampoo after this and it sometimes takes 3 lathers to get rid of all the oil but her hair is not stripped

Shampoo: spray bottle mixed with ¼ cup acv (Braggs with the mother) mixed with ½ cup Trader Joes tea tree shampoo. I add a couple of drops of tea tree oil. I shampoo every week or every two weeks dependent on how her hair looks.

daily Conditioner: I’ve eliminated this because evco works just fine. I use it the day her hair is washed and seal with murumuru butter for now. I will switch to spectrum shortening that Ive purchased from WF’s. If her hair looks dull during the week I add a little bit more evco. I bumped into a sensitive scalp conditioner at Duane Reade (I forget the name right now and will post when I purchase it) that I might consider when she goes swimming to protect her hair from the chlorine.

M&S: the last 2-4 inches of her hair ends with a distilled water/jojoba oil or evco mixture; The ratio is 8 oz water and 2 tsp oil. I then seal with Dax pressing grease (her hair strands are predominately fine and I’ve noticed grease works better). If she seals later on in the week she uses the spectrum shortening.

DC: only before and after a heat session heat

Protein: only when it’s time to wash her hair after having it straightened for a week or two.

Results: ½ inch of growth consistently since I’ve started this regimen. Ive also noticed her hair is fuller and upon closer inspection its because of 1 inch strands scattered throughout her scalp. I know these short strands are not due to past breakage, it’s because her follicles are being stimulated. The SD caused her hair to grow incredibly slowly. It is easy for me to track her growth because her hair was sun bleached last summer. Prior to this regimen she only had 1 inch of growth from Aug 2013-March17 2014.
When I first started this regimen the intent was to grow it to waist length (which will take some time) and then slowly even it cut it back to top of her bs. She now sees an improvement in her hair and wants to maintain it at bottom of bS or mid-back because she likes long box braids.

I hope this helps someone. All flakes/patches are obliterated with this combo: “grease”a day or so before shampoo, and “oil” mixture. Her scalp looks super healthy now and I’m thrilled. I don’t scrtich/scratch the debris/ patches because it hurts her and it’s harmful to the scalp.
Most pharmaceutical products are made with mineral oil or petrolatum. They require the hair to be shampooed with a harsh shampoo and then you might have to DC. My routine takes less than an hour (only counting “greasing/oiling” the scalp and shampooing).

For now my daughter is in protective styles because Im re-teaching how to be more gentle with her hair. I apply the "grease' to her parts and use the tip of the applicator bottle to get the scalp that is hidden by braids. I do different corn row styles or mini twists. Right now she is in box braids that she wears in a rotated bun or ponytail to ease the tension on her hairline. (I didnt realize her hair line was receding It has started growing in nicely from the sulfur)

*****Please patch test before using sublimed sulfur each time a new batch is made******

tjrj1998 I like the idea of using cream based sulfur mix. Can you provide the measurement of Qhemet to sulfur?

Also, do you think the sulfur mix keeps the itches and shedding caused by SD away?

Am I reading this correctly, you use the oil on wash day and the cream during the week?

I've noticed that SD is either slowing my growth or miniaturizing my follicles causing stunted growth. Thanks for any further information you can provide.

Ok so I have been using Selsun blue with good results. I then tried wen and my SD was in good condition. I was loving being able to skip DCing thanks to wen bun then I got a relaxer and the SD came back with a vengeance. Back to Selsun blue and DCing *sigh*

Re: Seborrheic dermatitis, Dandruff, Dry Scalp & Natural Hair How do you wear your ha

I've had moderate scalp eczema for all my life. It caused a lot of problems when I was relaxed. I can count the times on my hand that my relaxer didn't burn. When I went natural two years ago I was still ignorant on how to care for my scalp. Fast forward to the present and I'm finally figuring out how to care for my scalp and hair.

The main things that help me is to wash at least once a week with shampoo, avoid putting a lot of oil on the scalp, avoid shea butter, and eat right.

My main concern is for the winter. I want to switch from using Kinky Curly Curling Custard to a cream for the winter. Only thing is I can't seem to find one with shea butter high up on the list. Does anyone know of a cream/pudding/lotion/milk that doesn't use shea butter?

Along with lupus, I also have another autoimmune condition (scalp issues), but I control 99% of my scalp issues by diet (since it all starts from the inside - within the gut). I went gluten free January 27, 2013, and I had to really limit nightshades (Google 'list of nightshades' for a list of foods that fall into this category). My scalp has been so good and very happy and all so clear (absolutely love that).

Per one container of amla and olive I add 1 1/2 level tsp of sublimed sulfur. I mix it with a stick blender. I was using a mini blender but it was hell cleaning that thing.

The sulfur keeps the scalp clean so any problems you are having are rectified. My dd had minimal shedding because her hair grew slowly. Now her shedding has increased but that is a good thing. It def keeps the itchiness at bay. You have to play around with the amount you use because it can lead to greasy looking hair.

I only use the sulfur on wash day IF the hair is loose. If its not loose I use a shampoo that contains msm (a couple of Tbs added to an 8 oz or larger bottle of shampoo)

The sd doesnt miniaturize the follicle. The only thing that can cause miniaturizing is excessive tension to the scalp. SD can cause stunted growth because the follicles are being suffocated.

Once you begin this regimen you will see fullness before length.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

My dd is through the roof

Thank you for your detailed explanation on the steps you take for your DD's SD.

Like shtow "I have given up", mine is a mix of SD and Psoriasis and even though I have not had a relaxer in almost 10 years, my scalp is till in shambles.

And it is good to find someone that knows that SD stunts growth, thins hair and recedes the hairline if not managed successfully. I cut my hair to a fade again 11 months ago and I have just between 2'-3 inches of hair.

But putting the pity party aside, you give me HOPE. Over the next few months I will try your routine to see if I can good results but I have to tweek the products as I can't get Qhements where I live.

You are very welcome. I just went to visit my daughter over the weekend (she is at Camp in VT) and her scalp is doing very well. I can see her growth and she is very pleased.

Her hairline thinned because of her bun position.

I honestly think this will work for you. The msm I put in her shampoo is this one. http://www.iherb.com/Bluebonnet-Nut...gclid=CI6b14zT278CFSsV7AodZgQANw&gclsrc=aw.ds

You can order Qhemets online. Get a few at a time and leave them in the refrigerator. One jar should last about 3-4 months. I mix in the sublimed sulfur http://www.amazon.com/Humco-Sulfur-Powder-Sublimed-Oz/dp/B001V9OWNU and then put in in a color applicator bottle with the thin applicator nozzle

Re: Seborrheic dermatitis, Dandruff, Dry Scalp & Natural Hair How do you wear your ha

Just tried neutrogena T/Gel 4 days ago and so far so good. It definitely cut out the itching and flaking.

Has anyone tried monistat for this? I put some on this morning and I will be washing it out tonight.

Yes. It alleviated most of my "dandruff" which I now can say was probably some kind of fungal infection. I did it every day for over a week diluted with oil. Its funny cuz I was on the monistat for growth bandwagon and no dandruff was a surprise side effect.

Did nothin for the eczema tho. Tea rinses sooth that.

Thank you. My scalp usually hates oil. I have a very oily scalp and when I air dry my new growth will hold on to moisture(stay wet) for 3 to 4 days. I am actually hoping it can dry my scalp a little.

I have and it worked. I don't remember why I stopped using it, I actually still have some. I'm glad this was mentioned I'm going through a bad flare up right now.

Before this flare up I'd been doing an over night scalp treatment with Shea Moisture purification masque two nights a week. I applied it to my scalp massaged it in, put on a shower cap and scarf, rinse in the morning. This worked wonders no flakes, no itching, no harsh chemicals. When I ran out my scalp was fine for about 3 weeks but now I'm dealing with this flare up. I bought some more and it has gotten a lot better but nowhere near 100%. I'm going to try adding the monistat for a couple weeks.

I was going to say antifungals can soothe the scalp. I use ketoconazole 2% shampoo. Instant end to burning, itching, and tingling. I just started it today with a steroid ointment for the scalp. I didn't read the drug facts before I used it so I'm not going to use it in the future.
