Relaxing with olaplex/K18/ Redken acidic bond repair

Hi Ladies,

It’s definitely been a long time since I’ve been on this board. Since then I’ve been natural for a decade and I want to go back to being relaxed and for me a simpler time.

Now that we have bond builders (and I’m a little less broke tbh) and new product technologies out there, are any relaxed ladies using that as part of your routine?
Anyone use Olaplex no.1 in their relaxer mix?
Or olaplex no.2 mixed with some protein conditioner as a mid protein step before neutralizing?
Or the K18 mask ?
There’s also the k18 repair mist that K18 says to spray on hair at least 4 minutes before applying relaxer

Would love to know what others are doing to maintain hair health while relaxed/ texlaxed and your relaxed day routine.

I’ve been natural this time around for 9 years & I’m tired too. I’m trying to decide between amino acid treatments & a very mild relaxer because I want to keep as much texture & curl as possible, I just want it loosened. I also plan to use the K18 system when I do it.

I used Avlon Texture Release in 2020 & I liked the results, but I did notice a lot of shedding at first. I also don’t know if amino acid treatments are compatible with henna & other Ayurvedic treatments and I’m not giving them up. When I had the texture release I didn’t use any Ayurvedic treatments.

When I was texlaxed I could never get the curly texture I wanted, it was more like a kinky straight texture. With the texture release I had the 3b/3c texture that I wanted but I’m not sure I’m sold on the technology over the long term. At least with relaxers they’ve been around for decades and I had no problem using my Ayurvedic products with them.

I read some old threads where one member did henna on the same day as bkt/amino acid treatments to make the results more permanent. This has me curious if it would work for me but I don’t want to damage my hair or have it fall off my head.

@IDareT'sHair Olaplex and k18 both have instructions on their site on how to use their professional strength products on relaxer day, but I can’t find anyone who’s actually done it. I imagine the redken acidic mask would be a great finisher after shampooing and a moisture conditioner to bring down the hairs pH.
Here’s the olaplex instructions for example https://pro.olaplex.com/manual/relaxers/

I used to relax / texlax myself in college and I found an old picture of my relaxed hair on this site that I miss. I always had pretty terrible experiences at salons for relaxers and I can’t say there is anyone I would trust with such a strong chemical in my head.

@VinDieselsWifey I feel the exact same way. It was either being a straight natural, amino acid treatments or a relaxer. I’ve got too much going on personally and professionally to keep this up and I’m in a protective style 99.9% of the time due to my hair texture and constantly cutting out ssks. My shrunken hair is somehow still at ear length even if it’s bsl/ mbl.
I need to do the math on how to weaken the relaxer enough to get elongated coils vs relaxed hair. I assume the pH will be the biggest factor and I’ve got a pH tester to make sure the relaxer is diluted enough with conditioner.

I did a keratin once 9 years ago and my hair broke off terribly. I’m a bit skeptical about those from that experience so I’ve decided on the devil I know approach.

This book from Dr. Ali Syed just arrived for me today. He invented the products for Avlon, Affirm, Keracare, As I Am. I’m hoping I can find some good scientific info on changing the structure of curly hair.

I’ve also looked around on google patents at a lot of products that seem to never have made it to the market. But I study the technology. I saw one by K18 about changing the shape of protein structures using peptides instead of caustic chemicals. But I don’t know if it will ever come on the market. If only some of us from this hair board could work with these scientists to invent something new & innovative.

Ohh yes, hoping this helps someone

I ended up using all I had in my arsenal. I have spent some time looking at every corner of hair related YouTube and I really want to use professional products whenever I have the access to do so but do the labor myself.

I had detangled and pre sectioned my hair in twists from the previous wash day, similar to several relaxer touch up videos I found. This was helpful for me to move quickly through the sections and it made everything less chaotic.
I based my scalp, neck, ears forehead etc to protect it from relaxer. I used the protection from the chi line which had petroleum, mineral oil, and dimethicone as top ingredients.
I sprayed the K18 professional mist on the middle to end of my hair. I didn’t spray with a heavy hand, mainly because it was getting all over the place and we have dogs at home who would think chemicals are tasty. I had to clean up the overspray quickly.

While I waited for the 4 minutes needed, I mixed up 13.5 ounces of relaxer with a conditioner (3.5 oz). I figured I would need that much based on @MzSwift recommendation. I ended up using all of it so definitely glad I did mix up that much.

I measured a little over 1/8 ounces of the olaplex no.1 in my relaxer mix. The relaxer I was using is already a gentle relaxer so I figured I would mostly get elongated curls with this mixture. I didn’t add anything else although I might do a little less conditioner but put some oil (cocoa nibs by Camille rose) next time. The relaxer itself is a thick consistency and I want to smooth it out more.

after relaxing the full recommended time, I rinsed my hair/ scalp for 6-8 minutes straight, running my hands through the hair to make sure it was free from relaxer.

next it was time for the k18, I used about a pump per section- 4 sections total. It’s important to not go overboard with the product although it doesn’t really feel like it’s getting to all the hair. I left it for 4 minutes. I added Olaplex no.2 on top but only left it for 5 minutes. I wanted to neutralize as fast as possible.

i used the chi color indicating neutralizing shampoo, massaging for roughly 2 minutes each time. It was white from the first wash but I would always do it at least twice. The 3rd shampoo was with a Pureology shampoo which is a pH balanced shampoo as well. Their hydrate line is really nice when my hair is extra dry, which after the neutralizing shampoo, it definitely was. I also haven’t felt relaxed hair in ages so it was definitely a contrast to how my hair normally feels when wet.

I wrapped it up with a deep conditioner and blow dried with the revair & flat ironed. Next time I probably will not use any heat after so I could baby my hair more and combat dryness. My thought is that the neutralizing shampoo contains a lot of protein which left my hair feeling dryer immediately after that. It definitely feels strong but the elasticity that I’m used to isn’t really there.

I’m washing my hair about 1 week after to heavily deep condition and do another k18 mask / olaplex treatment to minimize breakage which I’m happy to say I haven’t dealt with at all thus far. I should have deep conditioned longer when I did the relaxer but it was already 10 pm. It is best to do this on a weekend/ full day rather than after work but I was called into the office so I had to.

FYSA- I naturally have high porosity hair that generally tolerates protein decently well. Even so, I regularly use mild protein products because my hair feels better with regular protein upkeep over hard treatments.
Also I was looking for stretched curl over bone straight. Not sure of the results using stronger relaxers. This is hopefully giving what I thought wash and go hair would be. My hair naturally shrinks to 90% of it’s length, this just gives me more stretch that other naturals seems to have. I won’t rule out relaxing for a straighter result in the future, but so far I think it’s cute. My flat ironed hair wasn’t fazed by some sprinkling outside which is all I asked for lol. I’ll try a styled wash and go this weekend to see how my hair does.

Your hair turned out so pretty!!

The first time I texlaxed my natural hair, I also left a lot of texture in. And ppl were asking why did I texlax if it still looked natural. I kept having to explain that I didn't relax bc of the way my hair looked, I did it bc of the way my hair behaved. After I texlaxed, I was able to rock WNGs and I experienced less shrinkage overall. Also, shower water actually laid my hair down and I could put it into a ponytail IN THE SHOWER without having to brush it with a brush - which reduced mechanical damage to my hair. And I still had the benefit of it having texture when it dried. ETA: Oh, and having my presses revert less was a bonus!

I hope you experience similar benefits that matter to you! Have fun with your new hair! :)
