Post-Partum Shedding?

Hi...
I had my little girl 8 months ago.. and my hair thickened up pretty nicely while pregnant. Everyone kept telling me that it was going to fall out after I gave birth... so I was trying to enjoy it while it lasted. Well... I kept on waiting and no hair loss until this weekend...

OMG I am freaking out.. My shower comb is full of long hairs and when tried to detangle my hair in the shower. Big globs of hair started coming out. I wanted to sit on the floor of the shower and cry.. Could this be Post Partum shedding this long after birth.. How long does it last? What can I do to help it stop if anything???

I was so happy that I hadn't seen ANY shedding and now this! What should I do? This is my first child and nothing else has changed in my life.. my diet is the same.. no new stress, vitamins are the same etc. ect..

Please.. any comments are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Post-partum shedding can happen as long as a year after giving birth. The clumps of hair are frightening. In the mean time just treat your hair as gently as possible. Some of the ladies use garlic shampoo and conditioner to reduce the shedding. When you shampoo and condition do it in sections, to cause less stress on the hair. Also I've heard some of the ladies take prenatal vitamins, I don't know if this helps. It should subside soon since it has been almost a year since you have given birth.

Hi,

This is my first post and I know exactly what you're going through. I found LHCF about a month ago out of sheer desperation when I was convinced that if the post-partum shedding didn't stop soon I'd be completely bald  .
My daughter is 13 months old now and my hair still seems to be shedding more than it used to. I'm not bald yet so hopefully it won't get that bad. My shedding didn't start until about month 7, but I'm told that if you nurse that can delay the start of the shedding. Until it stops, all I can do is take my vitamins and take care of my hair.

Hang in there!

My daughter is 4 months old and I am experiencing post-partum shedding as well. I am breastfeeding her so that does not cause it to stop or start later. I guess the norm is for it to start when your baby is around 3 months, and it seemed like almost to the day, my hair started shedding. I want it to stop soon, but I guess it can go on until your baby is a year old.

I have just been deep conditioning my hair once per week, alternating with protein and moisture, and just trying to keep my hands out of my hair. It only really sheds alot when I wash and not much at other times. I continue to take my prenatals as well as a Super B-Complex vitamin, and just try not to stress about it too much. I never had thin temples or edges, but now with this shedding I do.

I went through the same thing about two months ago. My son is now 5 months old. Anyway, keep taking your prenatal vitamins. That's where I made my mistake. As SOON as I went into labor, I didn't pop another pill in my mouth. I was sick of taking pills. But when my hair started shedding, I had to roll back up on the LHCF and get some tips. Someone told me to do the Aphoghee treatment. I hated this stuff because I had tried it years ago and remember it was hard and stinky. Well, I used it and my shedding stop almost immediately. I only used it that one time and I keep my hair in a protective style as usual and I'm still taking my prenatals. My doctor told me to take the m up to a year after I gave birth. So try that out, along with the Aphogee treatment every six weeks and you will see a dramatic difference. I promise you! Oh yeah, I'm on the Surge kick as well and their products are working great on my hair.

My baby girl is nearly 14 months old. I stopped breastfeeding in January. The shedding is just starting to slow down. My doctor told me it could take two months before things return to normal, so I have a few weeks to go. The shedding began when she was around 5 months and has continued. SO, hang in there . . . at one point, I started investigating wig or hair piece options, as I just knew that I was going to find bald spots. Nope, it fell out and yet a full head of hair remains. In fact, a new stylist said that my hair was very healthy. Lovely!!

Please keep me updated if anyone else has any tips on stopping this postpartum shedding!!!
Us shedding moms should stick together!!

.. and My husband had just started to comment on how thick my hair had gotten... OH WELL!!

Thanks for posting this....(I'm due within the next couple of weeks) and I didn't know what I was going to do if I started to experience shedding.

Thanks to all you ladies for the tips. I know now to immediately do an Aphogee treatment & continue to take my prenatals.

Thanks so much. I see your little angel in your avatar, she's beautiful. I'm also having a girl so I'm excited. :)

The bun is so easy, I got the instructions via Sistaslick, she has a How-To in her Fotki, so does VWVixxen.

I started a thread about post-partum shedding a couple of months ago. I'm so glad to hear other responses to this as well.

Is shedding hereditary? I asked because my mom nor my cousin went through it.

Also, mommies hang in there.

Dogmd, I am in your shoes!

My son is four months old and I thought I had avoided the post-partum shedding saga that I've heard so much about. Then about 3 weeks ago, I washed my hair (after having it in twists) and my heart started palpitating! As I stood in the shower, using my shower comb and then my Denman brush, there was hair coming out like I couldn't believe! I was SO panicked and I kept saying to myself, "Just breathe!"

I tried to deep condition, still shedding, tried another protective style, still shedding, tried to clarify and super moisturize, still shedding, got a suggestion from another member on the board to try Main N Tail, using it and enjoying the soft results, but my hair is STILL shedding! My temples and the the little triangle directly in front of your ear are EXTREMELY thin. I'm still nursing so I can't massage with EO's so I've been using the Nexus Biotin creme.

What else can I do? Do we just accept that it goes with the territory?

I don't think it's hereditary. I went through it with my son, but not with my daughter. So every pregnancy is different.

I am soooo happy this thread was started I am also due in about 2 1/2 weeks and wanted to ask about preventing the shedding . I shedded really bad with my son at around 9 months. My hair shedded so bad I think I I gave up on it and cut it all off and i am now 100% natural. I had a reverse mohawk going on  I was not completely bald in the middle but badly broken off. Everyone I spoke too denied it ever happening to them .... So I was thinking it was just me.

I will go out and APOHGEE this week so if and when it starts I will be ready:) I think what added to my shedding was I also stopped my vitamins and really had noooooooo idea how to care for my hair, now I think I am better equiped so God willing I will be ok

I am praying nonstop without ceasing..... :)

Hang in there... or as my mom says... " this too shall pass" ..
(this is her favorite line whenever I call her crying and asking her what else I have to go thru after giving birth)

NOTE:grin:( I clarified with apple cider vinegar shampoo and conditionerlast night and the shedding has slowed down significantly :D Still gotta go get the aphogee!

With my first two children I had no shedding whatsoever, but this pregnancy has been so different until I am sure that shedding will be a bigger possibility of happening this time around. I just don't want all my efforts to go right down the tubes!! If I see a few strands coming out, I will definatly run out and get some afhogee, even though I have never used it before. Thanks Dogmd for the words of encouragement and thank your mom for her inspiring words. I know you are right on point! I will try the Aphogee if I'm still shedding next week.

Im Not ALONE!!!!
Jeez.. Mine is actually slowing down a little bit. But it started when my son was about a month and a half and he is 4 and a half months old now. My edges are basically gone though. I was never on PreNatals, they just had me on Reg Multi Vitamins and Iron Pills because Im anemic… although I need to take those pills again…
Never mind the BC Im on..

NE ways, I almost gave up on trying to keep it healthy… But My husband talked me out of it

Keep ya head up ma!! Youre not alone :)

Aphogee products made my shedding worse. I am using garlic shampoo and deep conditioning 2x/week. My daughter just turned 9 months, the shedding started around month 4 or 5, and has slowed down considerably over the last month.

I do not remember going through this after my first daughter.

Thanks for the congrats Dogmd .... and Naturallady I did not know you where expecting also Congrats :) I did an Aphogee treatment just for good measure to strengthen my hair before delivery. My hair feels stronger but even after the moisturizer my hair is still pretty dry , so I have been combatting this for a couple of days with the whole head baggie method.

I have my satin pillow case ready to go for the hopital and I bought some Surge 14 plus and packed it in my bag as well  I am not playing around. Still have to replinish my hair vits and pack enough of them for the hospital.

After delievery I will probably wait a couple of months and then start with biotin, msm and homemade MTG MIX if I can take it while breastfeeding STILL have to do research on the matter.
with this and prayer prayer prayer God willing I should be ok

Update mommies and mommies to be!!!

Thank God.. the shedding has stopped. I never got to the BSS to purchase some aphogee... so I ended up using an apple cider vinegar clarifying shampoo and acv conditioner, then this past week . I massaged some WGO into my scalp every other day, and increased my water, msm, biotin and b vitamin intake. Today... only 1 or 2 strands in the comb and my new growth is much softer. I also started taking my prenatal vitamins again instead of my one-a day multivitamin.. (still nursing)!

Thanks for all of your support during my "mini- mental breakdown"...
I am back to normal this week!!

Have a good weekend everyone!! :)

My pp shedding started about 3 weeks ago. I'm so depressed over it. Huge globs of long hair everywhere! I hate combing my hair and washing is a nightmare. It's so bad I have to sweep the floor and WALLS after I'm done doing my hair!! I'm desperate! I'm upping my vites (safely since still bf'ing) and added msm back to my regime. That and I got desperate enough to try a little mtg mixed into my jojoba oil. I'm up for any suggestions also. Know you all are definately not alone in this!! I hope it passes quickly for all of us.

Godzooki...

I know what you are going thru... I shed for 2 1/2 weeks.. Hopefully it doesn't start again. I am still nursing as well, and I wanted to be careful with my supplements because of the baby.

BTW...Your children are beautiful... I like your avatar... I had to take my picture with my little one in my arms as well :)

I was depressed as well... but my hair is still pretty thick given the globs of hair that I saw in the comb and falling out on the shower floor.
My baby had hair all over her.. she is now crawling and putting everything, including her toys ( covered with mommies, the cats and the dogs hair) in her mouth. I was sweeping and running the vac. cleaner everyday.

Hang in there..

Some info

Hair loss after pregnancy (12 Mar 2000)
I am a 38-year-old mother. My second son is now six-months-old and for the last three months, I have been losing alarming amounts of hair. My doctor says this is normal but I have heard horror stories from my hairdresser. I have now stopped using shampoos that contain coal tar but cannot find an alternative to treat my dry and itchy scalp. Can you suggest any alternatives to an ill-fitting wig?
Name and address withheld.

Dramatic hair loss is common after pregnancy - but according to David Satchell, a hair specialist who favours natural remedies and founder of the Eucaderm clinic in Brighton which claims a 70% success rate in treating alopecia, today’s mothers who suffer from what is called post-partum alopecia are taking much longer to recover than previous generations whose hair would have returned to its full glory within 12 months.
Satchell, whose own hair began to fall out six months after his involvement in a serious car crash at the age of 15, blames higher stress levels, poorer nutrition and an increased in environmental pollutants. There is, he says, is no miracle cure but if you follow his natural treatment plan, you can expect a dramatic improvement in both the quality and the quantity of your hair.
Because you are complaining of an itchy and dry scalp he recommends a shampoo he formulated which replaces the coal tar you wish to avoid with juniper tar and eucalyptus oil. You may also benefit from a supplement that includes not only the B vitamins and zinc, all of which are important for healthy hair, but also live enzymes which will enhance the absorption of these nutrients.
Finally, and you will need to steel yourself for this, he prescribes alternating hot and cold head “dunks,” followed by rigorous massaging, to open up the blood vessels to the scalp and stimulate hair growth. You need to plunge your head into hot and then cold water, massage the scalp and repeat five times per session. Try and do as many sessions as you can face in a day.
David Satchell is the author of Natural Solutions to Hair Loss and Scalp Problems, published by Allborough Press and available by mail order from Eucaderm (01323-645164). It costs £5.95 which includes p&p. A 200ml bottle of the Therapy No. 3 shampoo costs £5.25 inc p&p and a month’s supply of the synergy plus vegetarian multisupplement with live enzymes is £27.75.
