NY Salon Review:Free2bMe\'s/Jazzygirls salon tested

Since they both went and had very successful touch ups done there, I decided to try out the salon for a rollar set after work last night. I actually saw Free2beMe's hair after the t/u and cut and it looked fabulous so I was encouraged to try out the place more. Free2beMe was with me (and Tracy) all doing the same thing...

Like Free2beme said, its a very sleek, professional looking salon which immediately impresses. However, I was disappointed with my rollarset and here's why: The assistant used her FINGERNAILS when 'scrubbing' the shampoo in my hair /images/graemlins/blush.gif, really working it in to foam/lather up which I found so uncomfortable and painful. I should've said something but stupid me didn't. She must have known I didn't like it as she asked if the fingernails was uncomfortable to which I said yes. So she used her pads more. Why use fingernails anyway???

They charge more for deep conditioning ($20) which I thought is a bit much for just a rollarset. To avoid that, I had my conditioner with me and asked them to use it leave it on me for a min or two cold instead which they kindly did. The assistant read the jar (Loreal Unfrizz) and asked 'what's so good about this?' I just said I like how it makes the hair smoother to which she didn't say anything.

What I didn't like was how after she put in the conditioner, she combed through my hair section by section by section over and over. I thought it was excessive combing on WET hair which we all know is at its most weak and I could feel her hitting the odd tangle and repeatedly working on removing them too aggressively /images/graemlins/mad.gif A light comb through would've sufficed. Free2beMe was watching and said she used a wide tooth comb which was a relief but it didn't feel like one and I'm sure has teeth closer together than what I'm used to. Plus she combed from the top down, not ends up /images/graemlins/mad.gif

I was rollarset by a different assistant who was very fast and neat, completing the head in what felt like 10 mins tops. She sprayed alot of setting lotion in my hair though which I didn't like as I know how it makes crunchy curls.

After removing rollars, I had a head full of hard curls which felt a bit painful. Not nice soft floppy curls. The assistant with the fingernails ran a big paddle brush through the hair which actually hurt (because of the crisp curls) and wrapped me and put me under the dryer for 5/10 mins more. They were going to use curling irons after removing rollars but I told them I'd prefer the wrap thank you very much!

After, the assistant who rollar set me used a bristle brush to comb down the hair and told me if I like I can finish the style myself. I could understand as alot of women re-style how a hairstylist finishes them anyway. After, my hair had a high bouffant look to it. It wasn't flat from the roots. I have alot re-growth right now and assume because I wasn't wrapped for hours the roots didn't have time to lie flatter.

I was hoping to get a nice rollar set that may be maybe similar to how the Dominican salons do; making you look like you just had a t/u.

It rained last night and I was out that night afterwards, and within 2 hours of leaving the salon, my hair looked sooo thick and bouffanted in the roots. It looked like a wig /images/graemlins/frown.gif A terrible job. Yes it rained but I've had styles last longer than that!

I wouldn't go back there for a rollar set. Their t/u's are obviously excellent and they have impressive products on sale; Keracare, Mizani (original herby), Kiehls at very reasonable prices and the salon is professional but I'll stick to a Dominican salon from now on...

I washed out my hair today (first time I've done that after a salon visit) and my hair is noticeably drier and my scalp feels VERY sensitive (assistant's fingernails). I'll use alot TLC up until my t/u next week /images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Aww shucks girl. Sorry to hear about that. It looks like no one does a good ole wrap like Dominican ladies.

I'm really sorry things didn't work for you. I personally didn't like the job she did on you myself. I know never to let that girl touch my head. Cecelia the owner does a marvelous job but I've noticed handles more managerial/biz issues than hair issues. So my only dilema will be how do I get Cecelia to do my hair all of the time? The difference is clear b/w my last roller set and my current one.

I believe Jazzyfunky was done by Cecelia too, hence the glowing review.

Sorry you weren't impressed with your roller set, BRH. Fingernails . . . ooh, that sounds painful. Stick to your roller set places, since you're happy with the job that they do.

I think its great that you guys went together. I try to get my bf to go so he can watch but...well....um....he doesn't know what he's looking for. I took my sister to a Domincan salon this morning and we were shocked watching some of the people do touchups. Sadly, she won't be here for my touchup though as she's leaving tomorrow. /images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Anyways, I don't know when I'm going to get my next touchup (I'm at 10 weeks right now but have to wait for my money to be right --and of course my schedule). At any rtae, if anyone here would be willing to escort me to Marvin's the next time I go, please PM me. I would love to have someone watching my back...... I guess it's not really the same becasue you guys were all getting services but I'm hoping it wouldn't be a problem if I brought one person to watch right? Do you think this is a bad idea?

BRH--Sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your visit there.....

The assistant used her FINGERNAILS when 'scrubbing' the shampoo in my hair , really working it in to foam/lather up which I found so uncomfortable and painful.

/images/graemlins/shocked.gif What? I can't believe she did that? Which one was it? The shorter light skinned one? (Probably was since you mentioned the other assistant set you fast and I watched her setting someone else and she was quick). When she washed me she didn't scrub but that was probably because I had just got a touch-up.

They charge more for deep conditioning ($20) which I thought is a bit much for just a rollarset.

I was told they do charge for the deep conditioner when I called to make another appointment (wasn't trying to hear it so I didn't make one). The assistant didn't tell me how much though.

The assistant read the jar (Loreal Unfrizz) and asked 'what's so good about this?' I just said I like how it makes the hair smoother to which she didn't say anything

Why did she have to be so nasty? No need for it. /images/graemlins/naughty.gif

But now I feel soooooo bad /images/graemlins/cry3.gif for even giving props to them. I am SO SORRY. Their touchups may be good but everything else and their business sense is nasty. I think I'll only go back to them for touch-ups. And it's true that I was cut and curled by Cecelia but everything else was done by the assistants. It does seem that Cecelia manages most of the managerial side and big things like cuts.

Jazzy!

Yes it was the shorter light skinned assistant that scrubbed my scalp hard. The taller one is the one that did the rollarsets.

I'm sure they are probably good with certain things but when I see basic health hair principles abused e.g. fingernails on scalp, excessesive wet combing, and spraying too much setting lotion in the hair so it was difficult to brush through crunchy curls, it's enough for me to know I won't go back, esp. as the rollar set is $35 (w/o deep conditioning). I'd prefer the D. salons for $20 that do it perfectly for me /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think she was just curious in asking about the conditioner I had with me. She didn't say anything negative, just kept silent when I answered her.

Cecilia seems like a nice person. We saw her doing a ladies hair (curling irons) and I'm sure she does an excellent t/u and cuts but no more for me. I got what I wanted though which was to see what they are like for rollarsets as I'd like to find somewhere preferably mid-town Manhatten that I could fall back on to use after work if I needed somewhere in a hurry.

Don't feel bad girl. It was my choice to try the salon out. I'm glad I just let them do a rollarset and nothing else /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

omg 35 for a wash and set???? i have paid less than 20 for a roller set. i believe the place i go to its 12-15 dollars. and you didnt even like the end results and they werent lasting??? /images/graemlins/shocked.gif wow i'm sorry that happened. i was considering there for a touchup but the places people go to they usually have a particular person they like and i cant be guaranteed i would get that person. plus the price wasnt talking to me. i mean considering a wash and set is 35 dollars i am scared to see the price of a touchup. God bless you all.

Re: NY Salon Review:Free2bMe\'s/Jazzygirls salon tested

Daviine,

I don't think its a bad idea to bring along someone with you for your next salon visit if it will make you more comfortable. Especially for an important service like relaxer t/u with a new stylist so they can check out what's happening and be your eyes /images/graemlins/smile.gif

A b/f if prolly a bad choice since most like you say won't know what they're looking for and will want to just leave! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I believe the t/u at Cecilia's is $50 and then $25 for the styling part so its really $75. I knew their rollarset would be more than a Dominican salon but being its a nice looking place and they already did good t/u's and cuts, I wanted to see if they had skill in the rollarset dept. too.

It was an experiment. I'll stick with where I know is best.

I don't understand the extra styling charge. I mean I come in, get a t/u, get it washed out and all I get is to leave with wet hair if I can't pay the extra cash? Don't get it. I think styling (unless it's a cut) should be free. My aunt used to run a salon and styling with any service was free (colors, perms, relaxers and so on). All I'm going back to Cecelia for is a touchup. I don't think I'll pay her $55 everytime my cut needs to be shaped up.
