4a/4b Natural Heads who BKT often

Hi girls!

I have recently stumbled onto BKT treatments, and I love it! I am a 4a natural, and I usually press my hair every two weeks, without a problem. I was wondering if there were anyone on this board that is natural and do BKT treatments once a month or more.

I would really like to do the BKT treatments once a month, because I like the lightness that the BKT gives me. When I press my hair with a hotcomb, I can get it just as straight, but it doesn't lay down as flat as when I do the BKT treatments, and I have to wear my hair up most of the time because it doesn't swing...with the treatment my hair actually swings, and I really like that. Also there's no reversion! Even if I were to press my hair with a hotcomb without any product, it would come out too light and airy, and it still wouldn't lay down as flat or have that natural swing.

Now, my concern is that in order for the BKT treatment to be successful, you must flat iron the hair at 450 degrees, and pass the flat iron on each section 5 - 7 times, and I don't want to do this so much that I end up ruining my hair in the long run.

So, if you do the treatment at least once a month:

1. How has you hair held up, and do you have any damage?

2. Do you flat iron your hair at a lower temp and get the same results?

Thank you for your time!

I'm 4a and I had two BKT's a couple weeks apart (Lasio & Rejuvenol); however, I don't think anyone is using BKT once a month.

I'm planning to do my 4th BKT (maybe tomorrow). The last one was around June 20 and I do understand what you mean about the difference in the flat iron with & without BKT. I have not had my hair flat ironed since my June treatment, but today when it was flat ironed I did notice that my BKT has worn off. My flat ironed hair with BKT does not revert anywhere near as quickly as my flat ironed hair sans BKT.

Hey Pet,

Hopefully Cutenss will stop by as she is a natural that does the OK Keratin BKT once a month.

I did my first couple of BKTs back to back almost and have continued to do them every month to every other month since. I've been BKTing for 3 months and my hair has seen nothing but improvement since beginning. Pics are in my fotki: http://public.fotki.com/sheba1

Both myself and Cutenss are mostly wash n go/ wet bun gals, straightening only when doing the BKT. Cutenss if this is incorrect please correct when you pop in. You can see Cutenss results in her thread: Natural Hair + BKT=SWANG!(pics of course)

I love BKT for the manageability and the near stop of single strand knots. I don't have to fear tangles when wash-n-going. BKT also makes my hair strong enough to cowash daily and wet bun without breakage.

ETA: I just noticed your title. Cutenss is 3c natural, I believe. But I'm 4a/b

Hey...
Sheba1 is RIGHT! I do BKT once a month. I do this because I am natural. I do wash n gos/buns/two strand twists 99% of the time. MY hair  it. I don't know of any damage because of the high temperature. And because I do, do BKT once a month, I don't know how much of it wears off. If any. The BKT is suppose to protect the hair, so that the high temperature should not cause damage. From what I have read (and I have read ALOT), the more damaged your hair, the better. I do wash/DC 3x a week. I also make sure my protein/moisture balance is on track as well. I find that I am retaining length, and not losing the hair that I use to, prior to doing BKT. I do only straigthen when I do my BKT. And in order to get the results, use must use high heat to bake the treatment on. But for regular flatironing after BKT, just use a lower temperature and heat protectant, to protect the hair further. Using good hair techinques and products that your hair :love4: make having BKT the best it can be. I am 100% natural. HTH :yep:

BTW: Sheba1 is the BKT expert :yep:

Hey just marking my spot here as a natural who will continue to do BKTs on a regular basis.

This weekend I did my second treatment after the first a few weeks ago, maybe a month's time.

I do notice as a wash n go gal myself, that my curls bounced right back after wearing it straight for about two days. It was just too hot to have hair hanging down my back:grin:

My 4a curls were so soft and they are stretched. I just rinsed and applied some HE Totally twisted and JBCO and was out the door. My hair remained soft all day. Even now, having not wet my hair yet for the day (meaning I ain't dressed yet); my hair is soft to the touch. Not like my usual un-BKT'd day two hair.

Oh and yes, I purchased the 32oz Softliss, because I will incorporate this into my new regimen maybe once a month or every six weeks. We will see.

ETA: It's also amazing how with dry hair (like now, day 2) I can decide to blowdry my hair straight for a flat-iron job without broken hairs all over the bathroom floor. Amazing, I tell ya.

Thank you so much for your responses!

It's just that I love the way my hair BKT feels so much, that I really don't want it to wear off....but I want to keep my hair healthy as well. Since all of you seem to be doing well with doing the treatment often, I think I will give it a try, and do it once a month.

Cutenss: I have been told that the hair is protected by the treatment, I guess I have to get accustomed to that...it seems unreal because nothing else goes on the hair! You wash your hair often, where I only wash my hair every two weeks...so I guess the heat isn't that bad, because I do no touch-ups in between. You are so right about having good technique to flat iron the hair. Your hair looks fabulous by the way.

donewit-it: So you purchased a 32oz bottle?! Well, go head girl....if you're going to do it often, you might as well buy a big bottle! You will save a lot of money.

Sheba: Your hair looks lovely! You are doing very well with doing your BKT treatments often...keep it up, and thanks for the info!

naturalobe: I love your hairstyle in your album! Thank you for responding.

Taina: Welcome! Just put "BKT" in the search function, and tons of threads will come up.

So girls, I think I will be BKTing with QOD Gold once a month. The time that I don't do the treatment, I will do a deep conditioning treatment to keep my hair on track.

Anymore responses are welcome!

Do any of you 4a/4b heads who are using the BKT have fine strands/thin hair?
If so how is your hair holding up with the frequent BKT treatments?

I have super duper fine and normally fragile hair. My hair has shown consistent improvement since the addition of BKT; it is slight thicker and stronger.

I will do my treatments every 2 to 3 months, going forward. With the last 2 month stretch, my hair went all the way back to tight 4a/b curls, but I continued to have very manageable hair that did not knot as frequently as my pre-bkt hair.

I choose to cowash and wet bun or wash-n-go daily. This is something I don't think my super duper fine and single strand knot prone hair could have handle had I not tried the BKT.

For me, doing the BKT isn't much different than doing a conditioning treatment followed by blow dry and flat iron. I don't use much more heat than when I straighten normally. I decided not to do the blow dry on naked hair that is normally in the instructions. This is the only thing that raised a red flag for me. Although I understand others have incorporated that step without issue.

So far, BKT is a keeper for me. I will continue to update all to the good the bad and the ugly, but I've had nothing but good great and greater so far!

I consider myself to have fine strands, and it seems like my hair has gotten stronger and a little thicker with the BKT treatments. I never use to have a lot of breakage, but now I barely have any! When I washed my hair pre BKT, I would always get a small ball of hair coming out....it was normal. Now post BKT, I hardly get any hair coming out and it's great! And that's a great improvement for fine, wet, natural hair. I will post pics after my next BKT treatment.

I have yet to come up with how to successfully dry my hair without doing the naked blowdry....so far, there hasn't been any major problems...so we shall see!

Hope this helps!

I don't bother to try to get my hair dry. I just towel dry with a microfiber towel (these things suck up a bunch of moisture) and apply BKT to damp hair. I got this tidbit from BKT veteran Socalli.

Thanks Sheba! I didn't think of that....and I have a microfiber bonnet from scunchi! I remembered when I used it, when I took it off, my hair was nearly dry! I will do this next time.

I ordered the QOD gold with the clarifying shampoo.

I'm also interested in tryin Mixed chicks and/or Kinky curly

Are either of these products safe (aka sodium free) for the BKT after care?

I've BKTed thrice since May (?) I think its May with no problems, I was just going to blog I didn't notice a massive difference, between the 2nd and 3rd treatments (my hair's still soft and nappy). I don't use the heat soo high 170 C and I only pass twice, been working for me, I've retained quite a bit seeing that I hadn't had much time to care for my hair (this is with flatironing on a modified Ateyaaa regimen on average every 2 weeks)

Hey ladies! I'm a looooongtime lurker but this is my first post. Ok so I don't know if anyone has answered this question, but as a transitioner, should I apply the BKT only to the new growth or to the entire length of my hair (relaxed hair included)?

hey there Jhcprincess, many of the ladies that are transitioning apply BKT to the entire length of the hair. BKT helps adds support and strength to the relaxed portion and lessens breakage at the demarcation line.

Im curious are there any naturals who have done this treatment and stopped for a long period after???

Im curious because it seems as thought most people use this consistently. I am curious on how the hair behaves long after the BKT wears off.

Also are there any heads who usually dont do so well with protien but experience great results with BKT???

^^^ I haven't done the BKT for maybe 3 months... not much time but my hair seems to have gone back to normal. It's difficult to tell because I'm transitioning so I'm getting used to my hair as it is.

Do you have any specific questions?

Thanks 4 respondidng Princess!!

Yea I do have questions :)

because back in my press and curl days I got heat damage all the time. Now that im natural with the use of heat protectants and a lower flat iron temp my hair doesnt do that.

I want to try this treament say when I wanna wear my hair straight for a month or two.I am mainly wondering if there was any negative effects if I did this maybe once or twice and then never again. Like, Is there a difference in the newly grown texture and the hair that recieved the treatment??? And do ppl see heat damage, because that 450 degree needed to "bake the treatment" sounds mighty scary.

Also since I have never had a perm either Im scared of chemical treament. (I know this is mainly Keratin not like a perm). Im nervous but definately intrigued enough to try!!

And can any other naturals chime in tooo!!!! I need all the answers I can get!!!!!

I'm natural/transitioning going on 2 years...almost bsl.

I haven't bkt'd since early July. My hair is doing just fine. No bkt-remorse. I'm glad I haven't applied the treatment to often, I really wanted to see what effects it would have on my hair. I may not apply another treatment until the Holidays. I thought i would do this more often, every 6 weeks or so, but I don't have to. I think I still have some treatment left on my hair - though not much.

HTH!
