Lucky Magazine\'s Hair Guides!

The have one-page sections for all hair types in the May 2004 Lucky Magazine with Gwen Stefani on the cover.

Here's what it states for "African American" hair:

"Don't be fooled by appearances," says Ouidad, a Manhattan stylist, curl specialist, and salon owner. "Your hair is naturally baby-fine and fragile, even though it looks so strong and tough. You have to treat it with kid gloves."

Don't suffocate your hair with layers of heavy moisturizers and waxes. "We laugh at that old-school approach now," says Ouidad. "Trying to hold your hair in submission just frizzes it out more."

Instead, go for light styling products and frequent moisturizing treatments. "If your hair is properly conditioned, it will have it's own weight," she insists. "You won't have to try to tamp it down."

For natural hair: "Simply wash and condition it every three days, and deep-condition twice a month to sustain life and bounce," says Ouidad. "Focus on moisturizing," adds "Michelle McCarren, a stylist in Boca Raton, Florida. "To add softness, I leave Nexxus Humectress Ultimate Moisturizing Conditioner ($8 nexxus.com) on for a half hour under a plastic cap before I shampoo."

Simply get your hair wet and use conditioner if you want to reshape your hair between shampoos.

Stick to sheer, breathable styling products that help set hair in place. "For dense, kinky curly, I like gels with conditioners to keep hair from puffing up," says Ouidad. "I also like lightweight pomades."

For relaxed hair: Feed your hair constantly with deep treatments--creams or oils, preferably with a hot towel or a blowdryer to help it all sink in. "If your hair is chemically treated and/or frequently subjected to hot irons--many people with relaxed hair do both--deep-condition at least every two weeks," says Ouidad.

Minimize heat styling. Less is more. Don't use hot irons or pull it too hard, and always set your blowdryer on the lowest temperature.

I LOVE Ouidad...

If I wasn't moving I'd go natural and let her take care of my hair when I have a fancy job.

She has a PDF file you can download from her SITE and she has a great little book that talks about taking care of curly hair. The book is the extended version of what's on her site.

Great Info! Thanks Bo!
