Coloring/dyeing natural hair.. Damaging?

I want to dye my hair to maybe a red or brown and scared because after years of damage I don't want to face damage again. Is it really damaging to natural hair? I'm fighting the urge of relaxing and want something different.

I think it is damaging by nature but with the right care you can have a healthy head of hair. At least its not double processing. Thee are lots of healthy coloured relaxed and natural heads on this board.

lesedi is correct. It is somewhat drying and can be damaging if you don't know what you're doing. I have color treated soft & healthy hair. After the initial dye job my hair was dry and rough. Qhemet BRBC helped snap my hair back into it fluffy state.

I use permanent dye to color my grey and it is damaging but I try to avoid heat and combing as much as possible. I haven't had any setbacks so I agree with Lesedi that proper care is key.

My cousin dyed her natural hair blonde and it looks so dry and fried now. Its sad because her hair used to be so soft and healthy. Instead of dying the whole head why not try highlights. I know NikkieMae2003 put highlights in her hair and it looked really cute.

Here is the video where she shows off her highlights

Here is a video with her hair curly. The highlights are still very visible.

Of course its damaging, you're taking the natural color pigments out of your hair. I would recommend you have it done by a professional colorist and use a high moisture regimen from then on. Your hair will be beautiful but fragile. Treat it as such. I'm maintaining my double processed hair just fine but I'm extremely cautious with my strands too.
