This is part 1 of the survey, for type 3s incl 3c/4a. Part 2 (for type 4s) is here.

I know, I know, but it's something I've wondered for the board as a whole. We are a knowledgeable group of hair-growers, so I wonder if any difference we see outside of the hair board is equalized here. Especially since we know that density and strand thickness play such an important role, maybe curl diameter is not particularly relevant for us.

There are a max of 10 poll options, so I couldn't do all the options in 1 thread. So I'm doing 2. One for the 3s and one for the 4s. 3c/4a is in this thread! I'll put links in each thread to the other.

Options for the type 3s:

  1. 3b and sl
  2. 3b and apl
  3. 3b and bsl or longer
  4. 3c and sl
  5. 3c and apl
  6. 3c and bsl or longer
  7. 3c/4a and sl
  8. 3c/4a and apl
  9. 3c/4a and bsl or longer

Poll results after 2 days of voting are in this post.

I voted... "3b and bsl or longer"

For me, I feel its important to add... I have worked my butt off to grow my hair. Before joining the hair boards my hair was always short & damaged. Most of the women in my family have SL to APL length hair. No fairtale hair.

I wear buns everyday, I'm constantly reading info on black hair care and I never use heat in my hair. None in 2.5 years. So I wouldn't by any means say it came easy.

I didn't vote because I just cut my hair and my vote would skew results... but just wanted to come in here to say:

Well, your dedication and patience really show because your progress is amazing!! :waytogo: Gorgeous, gorgeous hair!

P.S. Mwedzi, I LOVE your new avy!!:love3:

I don't know if I'm a 3b or a 3c, but I'll vote for 3b LOL! Just so you know.
I don't even know what hair type I have anymore...it's all so confusing.

BTW I didn't have long hair until I was old enough to care for my hair myself, my mom was scissor happy and cut my hair short all the time :angry2:

My hair grows slowly - slower than my 3b/c friends who have silkier hair than me, because my hair is naturally dry and kind of stiff. Without oils or butters and finger combing, my hair would never have grown this long.

I think my hair can easily grow to BSL even if I abuse it. It won't look good, but it will be there.

Your hair is gorgeous!

I voted 3c/4a and APL currently but my hair grows to about MBL on it's own. I just usually cut it when it gets there or to BSL. NOT THIS TIME!!! I'm goin for some flowerhair length strands!!!!

but maybe things aren't equalized? maybe 4a/b/c's don't go into threads 3a/b/c/ and vice versa because they think their tips won't work for them. so all things aren't the same.

if it's vice versa, that's close enough to equalized for the poll, i think. if not going into another type's thread to find out tips and tricks hurts hair retention, then all types should be hurting roughly equally because all types are not going into each other's threads.

I voted 3B BSL or longer. I too agree with nichole21. I am no fluke and it didn't come easy. I had to work at it. :yep:

3c but i too didnt vote since i recently bc'ed and this certainly isnt my longest length...or average length.

i had shoulder length all my life AND was fully convinced it would stay that way.

wasnt till coming here that i was finally able to grow it out to midback. sure its easier now only because i know what to do.but it wasnt always.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words! :yep:

I voted 3b bsl or longer.
When I relaxed/dyed/flat ironed my hair to death it would get around apl to bsl. Now it's around midback I think. The longest it's been is waist.

I was midback to almost waist length as a young child. From the time my mother started doing rollersets, and later relaxing my hair, it always stayed right around APL. Between the breakage, tangled ends and the excessive "trimming" it never had a chance to retain length. After I stopped relaxing, I still used a lot of heat and inappropriate products, and my hair never lengthened beyond BSL. It wasn't until I eliminated most heat, started co-washing and mostly wearing buns and updos that my hair started to retain length enough to grow longer. Fortunately I stumbled upon those things on my own, since I only learned of this forum late last year.

Many of my 4a/4b female cousins were at least APL as children; if their hair became shorter as adults, it correlated with relaxing and/or using heat regularly, and much more manipulation.

Voted 3C(Back/Middle/Top)/4A(Side/Front) APL combo (NL/SL when not stretched). Natural since December 2007.

On my head, the front grows slowly whilst everywhere else, it's like weed.

Longest my hair ever been? Bum Length when I was under 1 years old.:lachen:As an Adult, BSL with the aid of Leisure Curl. Hoping to achieve the same length as a Natural.

No...although my hair has grown to long lengths in my childhood. I have too many textures Type 3 (w/ some 2c & 4a/b), and unlike many type 3s my texture is thready, not silky. It is my texture (because the cuticles are naturally raised), not so much the curl size that makes my strands stick to each other like velcro and causes splits and knotting almost immediately upon being dry

I'm APL after a chop from BSL in March

I voted 3c/4a and BSL or longer. I want to straighten soon and re-check my length. I think I had a growth spurt at the beginning of the summer.

I'm 3C/4A....really close to APL; so, I voted SL. I BC'd last year and I pretty much had a boy cut. The longest my hair has ever been was WL stretched as a child. I haven't let it grow past SL since then. I'm one that's waiting to see how long my hair will be able to get with LHCF.

I vote for the 3c/4a APL. Even though my back is actually closer to BSL, I'm claiming APL in the back and SL in the front. It has no means been easy for me to get to where I am, it's been the discovery of LHCF that has helped me out a lot!

The results clearly show that a greater majority of 3bs and 3cs have BSL or longer. But this is not a surprise. Tightly coiled hair is just more prone to breakage anywhere along the hairshaft than hair that is less tightly coiled and is less dry for the same reason.

I think it takes much more effort to get 4b hair to beyond BSL lengths but not impossible. It is as much a psychological hurdle as much as a regimen conquer.

I voted 4a/b APL but I used heat three times in the last 2 weeks and I see breakage areas from that. I just cannot do heat...but it is not easy and I constantly have to get my wrist slapped by my ends that are on the floor when I slack off. Being texlaxed definitely helps! I feel like I am natural....I can barely see the line of demarcation from the relaxer. Shrinkage feels like slow progess, but I have to remember it is SHRINKAGE>

It seems that there is no huge difference between the 3s and the 4s yet.

Interesting! :)

HUH??:lachen::lachen: Mwedzi, you are going to need to run your two study stats through SPSS so we can accurately interpret your findings.

And she needs to factor in that so far the other thread's sample size is three times larger. We don't want skewed results.

I voted 3C/4A APL, I couldn't figure out my hair texture until I went to a stylist this past week, who told me that I'm 3C, but the middle of my hair is 4A, and the back is 3B.

My hair was always waist length as a child until I started cutting, dying, and using a flat iron everyday. I'm currently transitioning.

LOL! I didn't see a huge difference, but I guess all things can be looked at in 100 different ways :D

Besides, there are only like 25 of us that have voted and around 100 of them.
We need more people!!! :lachen: :lachen::lachen:
