What is MSM?

I'm sure that there is already a thread about this, but what exactly is MSM, a vitamin? Does it change the texture of your hair and if so, what about when you stop taking it, does your hair eventually go back to its original texture? Just wondering because I've noticed that in people's signature they say "MSM challenge". Thanks,

There are lots of threads on msm but it can be hard to find an informative thread if you don't know how to look. Here are a few I found:

When you need to search for something that is very common, it is wise to do an advanced search and look for it in thread titles ONLY. Otherwise you'll get every single instance when someone typed "msm." Also, because msm is actually too short to search for, add an asterisk to the end (msm*).
