What are healthy ways to wear hair down?

I have been baggying back to back since joining LHCF and my hair is major thanking me for it...
My progress has been amazing and i want to show it off on occasional days out...but once i let it down, i feel scared that it will start breaking and i grab the nearest pen, stick...whatever... and roll my hair right back up!
I also get a bit paranoid thinking 'when i get to my goal, how can i wear my hair down without loosing it all?'
So this is a question for you ladies that wear your hair down but still maintain hair health /length..

What do you do to your hair to wear it down?
How do you do it?
How often do you do it?

Please forgive me if this thread has already been raised...i could blow up that search engine cos it never does what i want:mad:

bump...
There must be some of you out there that wear their hair down a lot without damage...

or is there???

The general consensus I believe is that you can wear your haird down and retain length, but not as much as if you wear your hair up.

The safest way I know of wearing your hair down is by a rollerset. It is easy to maintain and reduces the need for heat.

I want to know this to. I know DLewis doesn't wear protective styles. Hopefully, she'll chime in soon.

Good question. I don't really know what other people do, but when I wear my hair down (not very often...maybe seven times in a year) I would spray a moisturizer in, seal my ends and wrap my hair the night before. The evening that I go out with it down, I just double check the ends and carry a ponytail holder. ;)

Try to pay attention to the material of the top you're wearing with your hair down. Cotton (sweaters) and other fabrics tend to make my hair matt up underneath so it's a pain to detangle later. Maybe wear a smooth fabric top to minimize the tangling. Good luck!

There are quite a few ladies here that wear their hair down everyday without protective styles that have amazing growth. If I can recall, I believe they moisturize nightly and wear silk scarves/bonnets to bed. This is what I do and so far I've been fine. One thing that I need to work on is the wool coat & sweaters that my hair seems to catch onto. When I wear such items, I will pin it up.

I wear my hair down about four times a week. I moisturize twice a day, or as needed with a lightweight mist. And I roll my hair at night.

If you are going to wear it down, make sure you are wearing a silk or satin blouse or cover the shoulders of your winter clothing with a silk scarf, so that your ends do not rub against rough fibers.

Also, wearing your hair curled, especially flipped up, keeps the ends from touching your clothing.

Most importantly, don't be afraid. You should enjoy the fruits of your labor. Just pay attention to how it is responding and you respond accordingly.

Enjoy!

I wear my hair down several days a week and have got as much new growth as you see in my picture, even after trimming 2 inches.

Roller sets are my favorite way to wear it down, as well as ponytails. As long as you keep it moistured, you should retain length just fine.

I agree that a rollerset is the best way to wear hair down. I love it--even thought I mostly wear updos after a rollerset, I have the option of wearing it down as well.

Thanks for the responses ladies:)
i have heard of the rollerset but never even thought of investigating what that means.

My hair is shoulder length... is it just me that feels that big waves and curls will mostly suit longer hairs? I have a vision of my hair appearing to be neck length after rolling and if i'm gonna toss this head of hair for a day, i want its full length to show.
Does any one know about ways to way hair straight that involves little or no heat? (and little manipulation?)

pls keep the responses coming

Great tips...
I couldnt agree more with the last sentence.
I'm growing all this hair and should at least reward my self letting it out once in a while.
If only i wasnt already paranoid.:perplexed
I keep thinking my progress has been due to total commitment and i dont want my hair to revert...:look:

I've been wearing Braid outs and Bantu Knots. My hair is sweeping shoulder and I've found that it is neck length in these styles so I don't have to worry about it brushing against my clothes.

Conquer your fears, sister! Conquer your fears!

I do understand, though. When I have had my hair up for a few days in a row and I then wear it down, I get nervous about the seat belt, my purse and/or briefcase strap catching my hair. The other day, I wore it a little straight and felt like each strand was touching something so wore it up the next day.

But seriously, start by wearing it down once or twice a month and keep a hair comb, pony tail holder or hair pins with you for security. :)

My hair is shoulder length, too (and trying to creep below that in the back :) ). I prefer curly styles on me, partly because I also have layers. Try using the biggest rollers your hair will hold and your hair won't be too tight. IMO, curls make shoulder-length hair look fuller.

If you prefer to wear your hair straight, wrapping it is an option. Some ladies also roll on really large rollers in the "mohawk set". I think Sylver2 does. Check out her album. That set gives body to a straight style.

I came back to say the same thing on straight hair. Sylver2 has a great no manipulation method. :)

If your hair is shoulder length, try to hang in there a little longer until it passes that length cause that is a big growth hurdle. But when I wear my hair out, I moisturize really well and seal with oil. But once I get back home I add back moisture lost, then I put it back up and silk scarf back on

Very grateful for the replies...
(she runs of to get note pad and pen)

Seems i'm about to become a fotki stalker again;)
Does any one have (or know a member who has)good instructions on creating these head styles?

The pic you have in ur ciggie is lovely..is that a braid out or the bantu knots?

I wear my hair down almost all the time (except for the last month because I've been sick). I think the key is to deep condition on a regular basis. I honestly think my hair has done better wearing it down than with protective styles. But I rollset so I don't do much to it.
