Split Ends?

Ok, now, please don't say to yourselves "she doesn't know this!" But, how do I identify split ends? I mean, I get my hair trimmed every time I relax, which is basically every 3-4 months. However, I only do this to keep my ends looking healthy and even, not necessarily because they need to be trimmed, but what would I be looking for to know whether or not I have split ends?

Take a look at the end of a single strand of hair. If it looks smooth and straight with no breaks or splits, then it is healthy. If it is split, it will look like the hair is split in two - - sort of like a road the forks off into two separate roads, or like the letter "Y". If you don't trim these ends away, the hair could conceivably continue to split all the way up the length of the hair, making it look thinner, dry and frizzy. Or it could simply break off due to weakness, and cause the ends to look thin and uneven.

I hope that made sense . . .
