Scriptures Against Pre-Marital Sex?

I was wonderinf if anyone could give me a specific scripture or section of a Bible that refrences pre marital sex as a negative thing? I'm trying to convince someone that there really are scriptures that are clearly against it. He thinks I don't know what I'm talking about because I couldn't quote anything off of the top of my head, and I had trouble find anything.

Thanks

To my knowledge, and correct me if I am wrong, the Bible does not mention specifically pre-marital sex. It does say lots of things about fornicators, sexual immorality, so if for you, all pre-marital sex falls under fornication and sexual immorality, there you have it:

"Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)

"We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did--and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died." (1 Corinthians 10:8)

"Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral." (Hebrews 13:4)

Edited to add:

"Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion." (1 Corinthians 7:8-9)

"Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband." (1 Corinthians 7:1-2, KJV)

The word fornication comes from the latin word fornix (from which fornicti, the ancestor of fornication, is derived) which meant "a vault, an arch." The term also referred to a vaulted cellar or similar place where prostitutes plied their trade. Fornication is the word which many Bible scholars use for translating the Greek word porneia into English. The word porneia itself can mean adultery, incest, prostitution, idolatry. So, the word fornication and its Greek equivalent were pretty broad and most likely, given the historical contexts, covered also sexual relationships outside of marriage.

OK, so question...if fornication means the above, where does it specifically reference an "unmarried person"?
From www.dictionary.com:
adultery-Voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a partner other than the lawful spouse
incest-Sexual relations between persons who are so closely related that their marriage is illegal or forbidden by custom *** on a seperate note, how did incest become wrong in the first place, because without incest civilization would not have procreated. By original design, incest was incorperated***
prostitution-The act or practice of engaging in sex acts for hire
idolatry-the worship of idols; the worship of images that are not God

How did fornication=having premarital sex?

This is a wonderful thread and Jessy55, you were very informative

There is strong historical evidence that fornication in those days also included pre-marital or outside-of-marriage sex.

Even in recent times, Webster and other dictionaries still define fornication as "consensual sexual intercourse between two persons not married to each other." http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=fornication

You still have laws in the book that make fornication illegal. I think Virginia, Georgia, and a few other states have such laws, but they are hardly enforced because so many people are having sex outside of marriage, they wouldn't have enough space in jail to hold them all.

I found this article at www.bible-truth.org, it made alot of sense to me and I hope it helps.

The Bible uses the term "fornication" which refers to the incontinence or lewdness of unmarried persons, male or female; also, the criminal conversation of a married man with an unmarried woman; adultery; incest; a forsaking of the true God and worshiping of idols (Webster).
Fornication could also be defined as "the gratification of sexual appetites without respect to marriage or the necessity of God's approval." The Bible uses this term as a general description for immorality (Matt. 5:32; 15:19; 19:9; Acts 15:20,29; 21:15; Rom. 1:29; 1 Cor. 5:1; 6:18; 7:2; 2 Cor. 12:21; Gal. 5:19; Eph. 5:3; Co. 3:5; 1 Thess. 4:3; Rev. 9:21).

Like adultery, fornication is also used in a spiritual sense to describe turning from God to serve false gods (Ezek. 16:29-34; Rev.2:21; 14:8; 17:2,4; 18:3; 19:2). The Greek word translated fornication is porneia, from which the English word "pornographic" is derived.

Sex which is approved by God is limited to the relationship of a husband and wife in the commitment of marriage. Sex outside or before marriage has many destructive results. It cast a shadow over the couple's relationship in that they have had shared themselves in the most intimate way with someone else. It is only truly special when both the husband and wife have given themselves wholly to the no other. Pre-marital sex, sex with other persons robs the couple of the intimacy that God designed them to have with each other. It weakens the bond they should have between each other.

Couples who wait for marriage to have sex have a much better chance of having a lasting and happy marriage. There can be a better commitment to someone to whom you know has only been intimate with you. Many people deeply regret they cheapened themselves and their marriage by sex before marriage. The gave up something truly precious for a moment's fleeing passion.

Of course there is the risk of disease. Sexually transmitted diseases are never a problem for those who only have relations with their chaste spouses.

Sex outside of marriage also has a detrimental effect on a person in that it cheapens it. A person who has had multiple partners loses the specialness of the sexual union.

Sex in its proper function as God intended it is of one giving oneself in love for the other, not simply self gratification. (Eph. 5) When properly experienced it is emotionally and physically gratifying to both partners and that is how God intended it to be.

a long time ago i was wondering the same thing. so i looked in the dictionary and looked up the word fornication because that is what the Bible said to flee from. According to the dictionary fornication means sex outside of marriage or sex between two married people who are not married to each other.

You are right. Incest was at one point ok. My understanding is that it was ok in the time of Adam and Eve because it was necessary and the law had not been given at this time. Once Moses was given the law it became illegal and by that point man had procreated enough so that it was not necessary to marry one's sister. Also by that point human DNA had been broken and recombined enough times for two ppl with really close DNA to have serious defects in their children if they did marry.
