Well, the news sounds positive to me. I'm doing a cleanse right now with Colonix. Sounds like MSM could possibly be assisting it with killing off parasites and/or potential larve if true!:D

Yeah I read this too.But I notice the study said.
"One report, for example, showed that MSM induced abnormalities in chromosomes and toxic damage to the gametes (egg and sperm cells) of worms. "
We are not worms.

I was going to purchase some more but I don't think I will.. ok it about worms but many ladies have had problems with their cycles, too much of a coincidence to me. I would prefer to be safe than sorry.

The alleged 'risk' far outweights any possible benefits for me.

The slug comparisonment :lachen: very true though. But for me prevention is better than cure

Maybe someone should do a poll and see how many ladies have had MSM affect their cycle. I don't know how to set up a poll. Haven't tried it yet.

Anyone want to do that?

Thanks for this info!!!!I to stopped taking it a few months back, because of my cycles issue and never really saw any changes in my hair growth.

MSM didn't affect my cycle but it did cause me to develp superficial clots in my leg. I couldn't tell if was the MSM at first, but I took it once again one night and sure enough I had a clot that looked like a bruise develop on my leg, so I had to completely stop taking MSM.

I love MSM, I have been using it 1.5years.

I have also recomended it to my aunt who suffers from terrible arthritis (her symptons have improved and she no longer uses a walking stick:))

This "study" sounds off to me! I have just emailed a medical rep who makes A1MSM www.a1msm.co.uk where I get my MSM from.

MSM did affect my cycle in the first couple of months but it began to get back on track again.(before i fell pregnant intentionally;) )

I will edit my post to add the response from Mike Pritchard... from a1msm

I don't think MSM is bad, but I think everyone should be careful, just like we should with any other supplement.

I had gotten this information from a biochemist I know:

'MSM, also known by it's full name methylsulfanylmethane, is a compound that contains methyl. Our DNA reacts with the methyl group in a compound to form methyl derivatives. When one strand of the DNA is methylated it usually can not bind with the other strand. If it binds, it can not reproduce the orginal DNA. This causes a mutation which could lead to cancer. Some people are more susceptible to this than others.'

He also said he doesn't know much about MSM but because it contains methyl he would personally stay away from it; but he is just a cautious person...

I stopped taking it because of my cycle getting out of order. I know it was the MSM, because I looked back over the year at my calender (i track my periods) and they were all 28-34 days long - until I started MSM. Then they changed to 40-45 days after a month of starting it. I stopped 2 months ago and they are still out of order. I am on day 31 and I am not having many PMS symptoms showing me that it will start anytime soon. I hope it gets back in order soon.

Ladies that stopped and cycles are back in order, how long did it take?

Smells like BS to me. MSM is naturally occuring in food and is in no way toxic at all. At times i have taken 10,000mg of the stuff with no negative side effects. I wonder who funded this "study". Complete BS.

ITA. MSM has the same toxicity profile as water.

Yes, we need to be careful what we put in our bodies, but we also need to be careful not to believe everything we read.

MSM update from professional: please read!

Thank you for your email.

Although we've not heard much about DMSO in this country (there's a good reason - see further below) it's actually been the subject of more scientific studies and world medical symposiums than any drug, chemical or compound in history! An estimated 55,000 scientific papers have been authored about DMSO resulting in it's medical acceptance and use in over 120 countries world wide. (Canada seems to have a major problem with it which is somewhat strange as two of the major manufacturers of MSM in the West are located in Canada - DistilPure MSM and Opti MSM !)
However, DMSO and later MSM, became huge threats to the Pharmaceutical industry, as DMSO and MSM are remarkably cheap compared to non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, consequently and not surprisingly many, many articles have been published trying to defame both DMSO and MSM

I believe it is very wise to empower yourself with information and knowledge then make their own choice.
]I have written some notes below which were part of my earlier research into MSM (and DMSO) and were the foundation of why I chose to take it and continue to take it to this day with much benefit.
Personally I have taken MSM for 12 years and quite frankly it changed my life. In the first year I took around 30,000mg a day (two 3 teaspoons, 3 times a day) and never felt better. I continue to take it daily at between one and two teaspoons a day.
Note - The notes below refer to the use of pure MSM !!! - There is a huge amount of MSM and DMSO coming from petrochemical works who also produce toxic agro chemicals in the Far East - Don't touch it with a barge pole ! - If you take MSM or use DMSO I cannot stress enough the importance of choosing pure MSM and Pure DMSO

DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) and MSM (Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane – technical name - Dimethyl Sulfone)
Background and History:
Who’s involved their credentials?
Father of DMSO and MSM Research
Dr Stanley W Jacob
Board-certified Surgeon and Professor, Department of Surgery, Oregon Health Sciences University. “Humanitarian of the Year”, awarded by the American Health Federation in 1983 for his ground breaking contributions to medical research.
Top of his field, a highly acclaimed doctor and researcher, 85 year old Jacob is considered to be the world’s leading technical authority on the use of sulphur compounds for the treatment of disease. (Note Dr Jacob takes MSM daily and has done so since its discovery over 30 years ago)
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and M.D. from Ohio State University
Research fellowship at Harvard Medical School Former Chief Surgeon in residence, Harvard Surgical Service, Boston City Hospital. First Kemper Foundation Research Scholar of the American College of Surgeons.
Books and Scientific Articles
Author of five textbooks and more than 140 scientific articles.
Author of the current section on "The Anatomy and Physiology of the Cardiovascular System" for Encyclopaedia Britannica.
His highly acclaimed medical reference work, "The Structure and Function in Man", is now used in more than 300 medical colleges and universities throughout the United States and has been translated into four languages.
Co-author of "The Miracle of MSM - The natural solution for pain"
Awards
“Humanitarian of the Year”, awarded by the American Health Federation in 1983 for his commitment and ground breaking contributions to medical research (see below)
Dr Jacob holds the distinction of being listed in "Who's Who in America" and "Who's Who in the World"
Medical Discoveries
Discovered that DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) extracted from tree lignin (the natural “cement” which holds tree fibre together) had incredible potential for the treatment of pain conditions.

Pioneered medical research into Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) and more recently its derivative, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM).
Led the field in introducing the sulfur-based compounds, MSM and DMSO for the treatment of sports-related injuries and pain from the conditions of arthritis, tendinitis and bursitis, among many others.
As a result of Jacob's work DMSO is now used in 120 countries world wide, with an estimated half-a-billion patients benefiting from its use!
In Russia alone, 30 million prescriptions for DMSO are now written annually for patients suffering from arthritis, lupus, Scleroderma (a serious skin condition) and a host of pain-related musco-skeletal conditions.
Jacob discovered that DMSO had unique properties as a cryoprotective (preservative) agent. The discovery was instrumental and is now used on a world-wide basis for preserving platelets, embryos, ova, sperm cells and transplant-bound frozen bone marrow for life saving operations.
Jacob's initial scientific report on DMSO stimulated thousands of scientific articles in the world's medical community. Over 55,000 scientific studies and papers have been written about DMSO - more than any other substance or drug in the whole of history.
Since 1980 Dr Jacob has used MSM successfully on over 12,000 patients for conditions as diverse as arthritis, acne, allergies, inflammation, back pain, and muscle cramps.
Note
I last spoke personally to Dr Jacob in February 1998 (aged 76) at which time he was still writing lecturing and seeing patients. Arriving at the university hospital as early as 6.30 am and working till late afternoon, he always has time for patients with pain conditions, the focus of his life's work. Dr Jacob is a true humanitarian of the very highest order.
Dr Ronald M Lawrence
The other leading light in the use of MSM is Dr Ronald M Lawrence - Assistant Clinical Professor of the UCLA School of Medicine, former physician for the American Olympic Sports Team, and founding member of the International Association for the Study of Pain - Dr Lawrence's qualifications and medical contributions are significant so, I've included them at the foot of this document.

MSM – History - Top Drawer Secret
The original discovery of MSM was made by a Russian scientist over 100 years ago. Shortly after writing his vital papers the elderly professor died and his office lay untouched for many, many years. The discovery which he'd placed carefully in the top drawer of his old desk, remained a secret !
Discoveries and inventions however have the uncanny knack of turning up somewhere else ....
Pine trees, Paper Mills and the DMSO Discovery
In 1960 - Dr Stanley W Jacob was conducting research into a substance called DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) a natural compound which comes from trees, claimed to have amazing health giving properties. DMSO is a sulphur-rich by-product of paper manufacturing. During the pulping process DMSO is released from within the tree fibres and escapes into the water in the mulching plants. Paper mills are noted for their strong smell, which comes from the sulphur contained in the DMSO.
Many years ago the smelly sulphur-rich waste water was considered to be of little value and before the advent of green awareness it was simply pumped into the rivers for disposal purposes.
Lumberjack Folk Law
In pine tree and lumberjack country it was common knowledge that aches and pains soon disappeared if you worked in the paper mills.
Out in the forests, lumberjacks working with the noise of chain saws and crashing trees often got headaches. Their remedy was to crush aspirin or paracetamol and mix it with globules of tree sap scraped off the stumps of freshly cut trees. They took the mixture by rubbing into the fore arm and reckoned it removed a headache in 5 minutes!
They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and in this case they didn't want to gallop off through the forest with stomach upsets from aspirin, so they found an alternative way to get pain relief into their system! (Dr Jacob later showed that DMSO indeed has a remarkable ability to cross through membranes and carry other medications with it. If fact it is now a widely used protocol to get medication into severe spinal injury victims)
Another folk law remedy - a couple of gulps of the sulphur-rich waste water was taken for the rapid relief of hangovers. The workers took the water from the mulching plant before any paper bleaching agents were added !
Incidentally, it was noted that the tough lumberjacks-types who worked in the paper mills, far from being rough skinned and swarthy, actually had remarkably clear complexions and baby soft skin !
Historical Discovery!
When Dr Jacob revealed his findings about DMSO to The American College of Surgeons in 1963, a wave of excitement hit the medical profession and press. The New York Times front page headline described DMSO as “The most exciting thing in medicine, it’s significance similar in importance to the discovery of penicillin”

Dr Jacob later discovered that DMSO had unique properties as a cryoprotective (preservative) agent.
The discovery was so instrumental it is now used on a world-wide basis for preserving platelets, embryos, ova, sperm cells and transplant-bound frozen bone marrow for life saving operations.
Although we've never heard of DMSO in this country (there's a good reason - see further below) it's actually been the subject of more scientific studies and world medical symposiums than any drug, chemical or compound in history! Something fishy is going on !
Unfortunately, although highly successful for the treatment of many physically distressing conditions, the drawback or side effect of DMSO is - bad breath and body odour ! i.e. When used in large doses it comes out on the breath and through the pores resembling the smell of rotting fish! The terms "Clam breath" and "Oyster breath" were in fact coined for people taking DMSO !! It's interesting to note that in our fragrance oriented society DMSO never really took off !
30 million prescriptions
In Russia however, DMSO is a highly accepted form of non-drug pain relief ! Russian Doctors now write 30 million prescriptions annually for patients suffering from arthritis, lupus, Scleroderma (a serious skin condition) and a host of pain-related musco-skeletal conditions. Accepted by 120 countries, an estimated half-a-billion people have benefited from it’s use!
Bear in mind that if you have a serious chronic pain condition you are hardly going to worry about bad breath and, if you think about it, you'd probably prefer bad breath to the countless side effects produced by some of our standard drug based medications! I think the Russians have got it right! Don't worry though, you don't have to head off to Russia or put up with bad breath - see below
Fortunately there's some very good news !
Dr Jacob continued his research and discovered that if you extract all the "heavy sulphur" (smelly stuff) from DMSO you end up with a pure white crystalline compound, chemically know as Dimethyl Sulfone, technically known as Methylsulfonylmethane and commonly referred to as MSM !
The Russian scientist's Top drawer secret had finally been rediscovered !
MSM therefore is a pure, organic, basically odourless, water soluble, highly bio-available form of essential sulphur.
MSM is actually a "sulphonyl" and as such, does not have the negative properties of the inorganic sulphurs, sulphates or sulphites which can cause allergic response and membrane irritation in some individuals.

Toxicity studies have shown MSM to be one of the least allergenic or toxic substances in pharmacology - it's toxicity rating is similar to that of water.
MSM - Highly Successful Treatment
During the last 20 years Dr Jacob has used MSM successfully on over 12,000 patients. People suffering from severe degenerative arthritis, sports injuries and traumatic accident victims attend his highly acclaimed, specialist pain relief clinic.
The accidental discovery of MSM's other health benefits !
To recap, Dr Jacob used MSM in his specialist pain clinic as a highly effective, non-drug, side-effect-free, pain relief treatment. During 20 years of clinical use however, patients undergoing treatments for chronic pain conditions started to give feedback that many other health conditions improved considerably after taking the MSM.
Dramatic improvements were seen by former hay-fever and allergy sufferers, skin conditions improved greatly and many patients noted their improved hair and nail growth and condition. Patients also reported increased energy levels, mental calmness and a host of other benefits including MSM's almost unbelievable effect of relieving chronic loud snoring!
MSM may dramatically improve your quality of life !
If you are suffering from poor health and nothing has worked so far, you've simply got to try MSM - it may be the one vital ingredient that's missing from your diet. Countless thousands of people have remarked on their improved quality of life after taking the safe and natural supplement, MSM.
If you've had very poor health for many years, I can't promise you'll recover in three days! For some people it can take many months before the full benefits are felt, and to be quite honest, for a few people it just doesn't seem to work at all.
A recent double blind study by Dr Ronal M Lawrence, assistant clinical professor of the UCLA School of Medicine and former physician for the American Olympic sports team, showed that MSM was 82% effective at lowering pain for 80% of the people who tried it over a six week period. If you are one of those 80% it may transform your life !
Remember MSM isn't just for pain or arthritis, it's helped a great many people in a great many ways ! Take a look at the additional benefits people experienced in "MSM the Patented Health Benefits" - on the MSM Resource Centre Index.
MSM - Safety
Toxicity studies have shown that pure MSM is one of the least toxic substances in pharmacology - it's toxicity rating is similar to that of water.
