Aveda DR is Hair CRACK!!!

And I'm not talking about Gina's hair crack either. I can't use anything else in my hair and I'm furious! Of course, it's my own fault for being a PJ.:( I have totally switched to DR, except for my Porosity Control day when I use PC shampoo and when I clarify with Elucence clarifying shampoo. Everything is making my hair look like matted little ropes. It's actually sticking together when I rinse, even after deep conditioning with my monthly coconut milk/honey/DPR mix after my Aphogee treatment. That used to make my hair soft and detangled. My hair is not responding to anything the same. I wonder if the Aphogee even penetrated the hair shaft. It also has this coated feeling even after clarifying and rinsing forever. I have tried other shampoos and conditioners several times and I always have to use DR afterwards to "unmat and unrope" my hair. Then of course it turns to pure silk. I can even work out for 3 days and then just rinse my hair with water and it will turn right back to "silk" without poo or con or anything. That is just totally not natural! Now just within the past week or so, I noticed my hair has lost it's bling and my oil is sitting more on my hair then soaking it up like it usually does. Oh, and I'm getting more little bits of breakage that I rarely get unless there's a problem starting up, but I'm not blaming DR just yet, it could be my heavy workout routine; but I am keeping my eye on it. I'm so torn ladies. I don't know what to do. DR makes my hair feel like no other product, but I don't like that I can't use anything else or even clarify. That's just not healthy. What can I do to remove this "coating" or whatever is on my hair? Has anyone else experienced this with DR, especially ladies with really fine hair? If so, what did you do? :(

I've never had that problem with Aveda DR.....wondering if something else could be the culprit :scratchch

I havent had a problem with it either. Have you ever tried using Aveda Detoxifier. I use it once a week due to our hard water. I use the Detoxifier followed by shampoo then condition. I have had great results w/ this and I throw my Suave clarifier away. Its only $9.00 and I know thats more than a $2.00 bottle of suave but its great stuff.

I've noticed the same coating. As a matter of fact I started a thread about it last year. I never have that problem when I use it as an instant or deep conditioner. I always have that problem when I use it as a leave-in. Aveda and oil don't mix. Are you rinsing thoroughly?

I use the conditioner as a leave-in and I notice the coating but I like it:look: . I still use pantene clarifying shampoo every once and a while.

I doubt it. Since I started using DR and working out heavily, I seriously scaled back my regimen. I wash twice of week, Wed and Sat, I use Surge and GD leave-in (which has been the same for the past 1.5 years), and then I apply Shikakai oil all through my hair and bun it up. That's it. No extra anything these days cause I'm too busy. I may rinse on days in between and apply more oil or spritz the scalp with Surge and apply more oil but that's all. I'm not even using the foam bun right now. I just loosely twist it, secure it with a scrunci and go. My regimen is so minimal right now it's really easy to notice things and I admit it was working great until about a couple weeks ago when I first tried to clarify since using DR and my hair matted up. That has never, ever happened with Elucence.

Wow! I see Sareca says she was having the same issue. Sounds like some sort of buildup, but you would think clarifying would do the trick. That's odd.

I got mine out by clarifying. It just took a couple times. I still use as leave-in. I just don't use any oil afterwards and I don't do as it often. I had that problem when I was using it daily as a leave-in.

I probably should use as directed. :ohwell:

Dang, I hate this happened Lav. I havent had this happen to me but I mix up my routine. Let us know if you figure out exactly what the problem is.

I am rinsing like crazy! I even tried three shampoos this last time with my clarifier and porosity control poo....nothing but ropes. I never use Aveda as a leave-in. I only use as I was told by the rep....wash, condition, then treatment. I even stopped using the treatment for 20 minutes with heat. I just leave it on for 5 minutes and rinse thoroughly, but I always follow the steps in order. I have never even tried the cons as leave-ins. I want to try washing a few times (few days) with clarifier, but I cannot get past the matted ropes in my hair, so I end up back to the Aveda.

Maybe this would work because it's made by Aveda. I'll take a look at the ingredients and go from there. Maybe I'll go back and talk to the rep.

Have you tried an ACV rinse?

I've only used ACV rinse once, years ago, and of course I used it full strength and ended up with a frizz ball of hair. How much ACV do you use and how exactly do you make your rinse? I'm seriously thinking of doing this one right now.

Lav...I am sorry to hear this. I was just thinking about adding Aveda DR to my rotation. :ohwell:

For my ACV rinses, I get a gallon of distilled water and pour out about a fifth of the water and then add organic ACV in its place. I shake it up to mix it and that usually last me about 2-3 washes. I do it as my final rinse after shampoo and DC and the smell usually evaporates within about 5-10 minutes. Then I add my leave-ins. HTH

Wow, Lavendar! I wanted to try DR but maybe I should just stick to what works for me.:perplexed

I was just talking to Locks about my own DR issue. I just got my DR last week, and so far it's on Strike One. Two more, and well you Aveda Queens can hit me up in the product exchange forum. For $96 worth of product I was expecting a miracle I guess. Shooo, I coulda had 32 Creme of Natures for that  My hair felt like a tangly, swollen, puffy brick after clarifying and using the DR shampoo and conditioner. Not to mention the short pieces of breakage on the counter. :crying3: I just don't understand. :whyme: Do you ladies find that this line is more for protein or moisture? Maybe I did something wrong?

Is there a more moisturizing Aveda line/products than the DR?

This is what I'd like to know. I am in need of some SERIOUS help in the moisture department.

Thanks Brownsugar for the ACV rinse recipe!

Well ladies, I went to see the Aveda rep today and she advised me to use the Hair Detoxifier. I'll wash on Wednesday and see how it comes out. I did try again to wash yesterday and ended up with matted rolls again, but I stuck it out and lost too much hair unnecessarily, cause I went back to DR the following morning. Now for the ladies who want to try it, I don't know what to tell you. The 3-step treatment is great and makes the hair really soft, but if you are prone to buildup and your hair typically doesn't like cones, it may cause problems after a while. My hair was great and was loving this stuff for the first couple of months. Then I tried to wash with something else and it matted right up. All I can use is DR or I get matted up, even my clarifier. But soon as I DR, my hair just smooths out all over the place, just like it's on crack! I still haven't figured out if it is worth it or not, even though the stuff is great. Now if the detoxifier is as strong as the rep says, and if it removes all this buildup then maybe I can work it out cause like I said, it took a couple of months for this to happen. And, she did say perhaps I should now rotate with Smooth Infusion. She said it was much more moisturizing than the DR. So if the detoxifier works, then this is what I may have to do. Thanks ladies for all your suggestions and concern. And thanks Babalou (Ms. Barbie Doll) for the detoxifier suggestion!

How did it turn out? :)

Aveda Damage Remedy IS crack. I've been using it for several months now...nothing else. Well, today, I realized that I had some NTM that I hadn't finished up from some time ago so I thought I'd use it. I shampoo'd with NTM, conditioned with the NTM Daily Conditioner, sitting under the dryer for about 30 minutes or so. When I went to rinse and detangle my hair in the shower like I normally do, my hair was extremely tangled. Usually, I don't have many tangles. Granted, I am 9 weeks post relaxer. I decided to apply the DR Conditioner and PRESTO my hair immediately turned to silk...I slide my comb through my hair and the tangles slipped out easily. Don't understand that. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt since I'm in need of a relaxer but I'll give it another try after a relaxer.

By the way, I tried a new product today....the Hang Straight. Thought I'd give it a try since I'm almost out of the Elixir. I loved it. It really calmed my 9 weeks-post poofy wet hair and left a nice sheen after blowdrying. I did add a few drops of the Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss with the Hang Straight before applying to my hair.

Okay, I'm really shaking my head on this one because I'm really surprised that so many people are on the Aveda DR tip.

Please understand my thoughts, as I'm not targeting anyone here, it just seems too ironic.

1. Has anyone thought that just maybe, just maaayyybe Aveda DR is only meant to be used for a certain period of time to nurture the hair and then cease use? I'm sure Aveda reps caught on to this one $$$$ (not sounding mean): AA women visiting the store looking for products to "solve" a problem (may not even be one relative to protein) and then walk out with another "remedy" type product (specifically damage). How many of you walked in the store browsing and came out with a "recommended" line other than Damange Remedy. Better yet, how many reps said you don't need DR you need SI, or Brilliant, or Shampure...?

2. Damage doesn't mean lack of protein. Damage could mean that your hair needs moisture, collegan, etc. Furthermore, I'm beginning to believe that not all proteins work the same. In fact some are not as "potent" (if you will) as others. There's wheat protein, soy protein, quinea (sp) protein, silk protein.

3. I think DR is hair crack because the first thing we do is run to the store for a quick "fix" and it's just that a quick fix. Try asking a crackhead how long their high last. LOL :lachen: (I'm not calling anyone one here crackheads either)

So what I'm getting at is this: Focus on health first then products last. If you get your protein from food or supplements, guess what? You don't have to worry about repediate use of protein shampoo, protein conditioner, protein this protein that. IDoing so I'm sure may save a few strands of hair falling due to the direct contact of whatever protein used with the intention of solving a protein imbalance (like how is one to know how much protein is lacking to get it rebalanced anyway?). As for products: B-A-L-E-N-C-E!

I admit I did the SAME thing when going to the Italian salon, I was like don't I need the Kerastase Forte or repair stuff. He looked at me like I was crazy and said "why do you need? your hair is not damaged. If I put on then your hair will be damaged, do you want?" :nono: So, I sat my happy *** down and let the specialist go to work. :)

Again, I'm not being mean I'm just expressing my thoughts on this subject since it has been brought up. :look: I think I see a bullet....

Not quite sure I understand your comment...maybe I need to read it again. But, the point I was trying to make was that my hair does perfectly fine (is silky, flowing, bouncy and well moisturized) when I used Aveda DR but when I used another product (for the first time last night) it didn't respond well.

I don't believe in quick fixes. I'm looking for a provide that contributes to healthy hair. I don't think Aveda DR or any shampoo or conditioner in and of itself would be considered a quick fix. Aveda DR has and continues to work well for me. I don't have any breakage nor is my hair shedding, which would imply that the products were damaging to my hair, too strong, etc.

Yikes, I was all set today to buy this stuff...

Hmmmmmmmmm...

Well I used the DR Intensive Treatment on my hair last week and my hair seemed to respond to it immediately in terms of how it looked and felt.

I followed it up with the Pantene Breakage Defense Mask....and the comb glided through my 6 weeks post touch up hair. I couldn't believe it.

It caught me off guard, it made me hair happy....

*I'm trying the Brilliant tonight...see if I see any difference*

Hi Comike!

All shampoos and conditioners on the market are quick fixes as they only provide temporary results. Whether it be protein or something else, it's a quick fix. We all use them, even myself. If we didn't then we would have to rely on our diets to maintain heathy hair. My posting was more of a theory on the Aveda DR product because it seems (from reading past threads about Aveda DR) that most Aveda reps recommend DR to AA women. I'm going to call an Aveda store and explain my hair type and I'll post what they blindly recommend.

I was also stating that if one leaves the strengthening of hair to nutritional methods i.e protein intake, amino acid supplements, etc. then that would lessen the amount of protein based products on the hair. And we all know that too much protein on the hair (not via nutrition) via treatments has adverse effects: dryness, brittle, coarse, even breakage.

Again, I was just sharing my thoughts on the subject like everyone else, but mine was I guess on a more aggregate level. :)

I can't tell how people are using it from the posts I've seen, but ADR should definitely be used as directed. The treatment in particular should not be used too often, as it can affect the hair like any other protein treatment and make the hair brittle, dry, and otherwise unmanageable.

I use the Rosemary Mint shampoo to clarify when I need it, but I only use ADR once a week. I have other treatments I rotate in to be sure I don't overuse it.

I think (and it's happened to me too) that because it makes the hair feel so nice, there's a danger of overuse with ADR. Be sure to use the product in moderation. :)

Aveda says the treatment is to be used weekly. I do not use it more than that. The DR line is the only one I've been using for a little over a month and I'm satisfied. I do plan to try SI just to rotate the products.
