What have ever done to your hair that you regret?

I will never forget it to this day:

I was 12 years old and had just gotten my first set of micro braids to start off the summer. I thought that I was fly. Long hair, don't care...all of that. Well, one day I went swimming and forgot to detangle it right away, so the next morning the hair was matted. My mom had to help me detangle the hair, and ended up having to cut a lot of it (none of it was my own hair though).

I was upset because I could no longer put the hair into a high ponytail/bun like I had been doing because most of the braids in the back were too short. So what did I decide to do? I went into my parent's bathroom, grabbed some scissors and started cutting off all of the braids (including MY HAIR) in the back of my head until I could fit the rest into that high ponytail. Oh, and to make matters worse, I grabbed my dads electric razor and shaved down MY HAIR in the back, to make it look nice and neat.

My mom freaked out when she saw what had happened, and immediately thought that the braids and chlorine had taken my hair out. I didn't realize how bad the damage was until her and my aunt started taking my braids out and I realized that I had NO HAIR in the back of my head!

My hair never fully recovered after that. My hair was APL before I shaved it, and afterward, it was hardly past shoulder length for years.

The story is hilarious looking back now, but during that time-frame, it was devastating, especially since I was beginning junior high in a few months and my mom was going crazy trying to figure out a way to help me cover up the damage I had caused.

I regret tolerating a burning perm just so that it would take. There is a spot in my hair that is considerable thinner than the rest of my hair.

Any relaxer I ever had.

I miss my relaxed hair "flow". And i have nothing against relaxers.

But I don't miss the fact that relaxer stunted my retention since I was 13 years old. I had no idea what I was doing to myself. If I had known my hair would be longer without the chemicals, I would have left it alone for good.

I wish I had never ever gotten one and had learned to care for my natural hair.

I regret being so reckless with my hair...I regret trying to learn how to do my own relaxer, the trial and error took out my hair. I should have known doing 1 self relaxer, and corrective relaxer and then going to a Dominican salon to get it relaxed all within a few weeks would have resulted in a disaster. I don't know how I still had hair. Sad thing at this point I already knew better. At least it lead me to being natural.

I regret not giving up relaxers YEARS ago.
I regret that horrible dye job back in 1993 that made my hair fall out LOL I've been paranoid since then. I went from APL to NL.
I regret using henna. Now I can't dye my hair any color except brown on my roots.

That’s what I do.. I drink and I know things....
In college, letting this girl braid microbraids so tight that it took ALL of my edges out! It was clean and bald around my edges!! That was horrible!!!!!!

Using hair glue to glue in tracks and then ripping them out instead of loosening the glue first and then taking them out.

Last year not taking out the sew in I got done for my mom's funeral even when it hurt really bad and when I did take it down, it was a fingertip sized bald spot from where my hair was pulled clean away from my scalp.

Not realizing my Vitamin D levels were almost 0 and that being the real reason my hair had literally stopped growing in certain spots on my head. I have some spots that have stayed the same length for over a year.

Tex-laxing my natural hair last year. I should have left it natural even though I was not feeling my type. I would have an amazing puff by now.

Cutting my hair twice for the sake of being natural. I cut it March 2011 and September 2011 respectively.

Omg!!! I cut off the back of my hair in 6th grade to make it fit in a ponytail! I thought I was the only person in the world that crazy!

My hair was hella uneven for YEARS after that!

My mom thought my ponytail was soooo cute until I walked past her and she saw the back of my head. "OOPS! WTH?!!!"

;) hilarious!!!!

Getting my hair braided while I was visiting family in Nigeria.
The price was RIGHT... but the way my hair was handled :nono:

(This was before I learned the art of speaking up).

I regret the six month stretch that I finished in May. I could see that the sides of my hair had grown considerably, but every time I shampooed, I had a terrible time detangling and pulled out locks of hair. There were never SSKs - these were knot families! :nono:::nono::nono:

When I went i to the salon for the touch up, I knew that I needed a trim badly because the central back of my hair wasn't as long as the sides. It turns out that I had so much broken hair in the crown from detangling that it affected the length in the back - and length was the whole reason that I was stretching six months instead of the usual three. I'm now sporting the "see through look" in the back.

Probably, my worst hair moment was in my freshman year of college when I was competing in the local Miss America contest. I decided the night before the contest that I needed layers in the crown on my hair, and that I would do the, myself. It was horrible. Never start cutting your hair at 10:00 at night. I had to pin my hair up so that the large sections that I cut out they didn't show. I didn't win or take one of the top spots. I haven't cut my hair myself since this. :thatsall:

The second biggest regret of my life was getting one BKT November 2010 my hair has never been the same the texture is rough and all my years of growing out my natural hair went down the drain ( along with my hair) I hate now I have to wear wigs to try and grow it out again.

^^ I missed the BKT fad. ill have to do a search to see what the heck it is :ohwell:

Anywho, My biggest regret was micro-braids as a freshmen in college. They were very easy at the time but they thinned out my hair something awful. It took years to get thick again.

Second biggest regret was using a Conair Blowdryer with the comb attachment below . My hair stayed the same length for about a year and i had no idea why. Run from this ladies...RUN!! :nono:

Using scissors to take out micro braids. I cut my hair every single time!

Going to stylist for years who didn't understand or care about the health of my hair. They let me fry, dye, and chop it all off.

Going back to Dominicans for that blow out after I could see the damage it was doing.

Not researching hair care sooner and joining this wonderful forum with tons of knowledge. I swear I was clueless and accepted the idea that my hair would never be long. Not anymore! I want hair to my ankles lol

1. Getting a relaxer period- I have nothing against straightened hair. I loved my relaxed hair. But the chemicals were too much for my scalp. I have a sensitive scalp plus eczema. I can probably count on my hands the number of times I got a relaxer and didn't feel any burn on my eczema patches

2. Waiting two years to get a trim- I just got my first trim being natural in July. The last time a pair of scissors were near my hair was when I did the big chop 2 years ago. So of course I had a lot of damaged ends. So the amount trimmed was more than I would normally be comfortable with. Now I will be getting trims every 3-4 months.

I regret not trimming my hair for almost 2 years. I never noticed how bheat often because I'm just not good with a blow dryer but this summer I went on vacation and go my hair blown out for some braids sans extensions and I noticed the very obvious raggedy ends.:perplexed last month I cut about 3 inches off, from WL to MBL, and I've got 6 more to go. Learned my lesson:yep: I will now be maintaining my current length until I have max 3 inches of scraggly left, from there I will be growing my hair to the ultimate goal of HL.

Gonna cosign on the microbraids :yep:. I got them in high school in black (mistake #1), extremely small (mistake #2), and I didn't know the first thing about caring for my hair underneath (mistake #3). Long story short, I took them out with scissors not knowing that I'd cut my own hair and lose 1/2 of my hair's original thickness... 6 years later and it's just starting to come back :wallbash:

Continuing to relax my hair after Reniece suggested I go natural.

Several set backs later and now a natural, I wonder what the heck I waited for. My hair could be down to my butt by now !
