Long Term Transitioner - 37 months update

Hello ladies, so I've been transitioning about 3 years, my last relaxer was mid October 2008, and I figured I'd share my progress with you all. I know that it would be better in it's naturally curly state but um my hair came out straighter(does acv rinse make it straighter?) than i expected also my hair tangles very badly if i let it airdry out of braids. So this will do unless i take some pics next week and replace these.

My relaxed hair mostly starts maybe an inch or two under wl. I really should just cut it all off but i'm one of those people that don't want to give up length even if it's 5 strands  I've been steadily trimming though 2-4" every 6 months.

I took pics because i plan to trim off a couple inches this week. :yep:

anyway here is my update pic.

So havilland andSolitude asked some good questions so i decided to add them to the first post. I'm sorry that I'm kind of long winded :( If this is better put on the second page tell me please.
What is your regimen????

My Current Regimen
*I will say in advance I'm not always consistent*
  • Prepoo with aloe vera juice and sunflower oil (i separate my hair into four sections and then saturate each section with aloe vera juice, put each section in a bantu knot as i go, then i will rub sunflower oil over each section and then braid and put on a shower cap for 1-24hr)
  • Wash with Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo *(I only do this once a month or if i have a lot of build up and I don't always use it on the length of my hair.)///Alternative wash with Burt's Bees Moisturizing Raspberry and Brazil Nut Shampoo
  • Do mild protein treatment eggs//conditioner//mayo//soybean oil; leave on for 30 min - 3 hrs. **I only do this about once a month
  • Condition with Suave Almond and Shea Conditioner and baggy for 1-24 hrs:look:
  • Rinse conditioner out towel dry partially
  • spray with aloe vera juice and seal with avacodo(sometimes) and sunflower oil(always)
  • rebraid if i've left them out after conditioning.
Ignoring the protein and shampoo, i cowash every week.
I wear my hair in a bun(out) or pigtails(at home)

And how has it changed over the last couple of years?
I am truly a forgetful person. So while I know my regimen has changed over time. I can't tell you exactly how. I did have a blog entry on it in 09 but that's long been deleted.
I can tell you some products that I don't use anymore though.

I try to moisturize every day or every other day.

  • I know last year I used coconut oil, i barely used it this year. I really do like it though.
  • I was using suave coconut conditioner for cowashing and as a leave in. But I like the Suave Almond and Shea better.
  • I don't really use conditioner as a daily moisturizer anymore since discovering Aloe Vera Juice in march.
  • I was using burt's bees Raspberry and Brazil Nut moisturizing conditioner and that worked amazingly for me. I just didn't want to buy it. :look:
  • I know in the beginning in 09 i was not cowashing really and when i started that, it helped so much.

What made you decide to transition?

I decided to transition for a couple reasons. But first let me say when i first starting transitioning it was not a concious descion. In 07 I had become bored of the pin straight hair relaxers gave me. I also hated getting chemical burns on my scalp. So I was having my mom leave them on a shorter amount of time and waiting longer and longer before I'd get the next one. Then I just decided not to get a touchup.
Also, in the spring semester of 08 I had a professor that was natural and her hair was so gorgeous. I would literally stare at her hair instead of listening to her lecture. :look: I decided I would grow my hair out and wouldn't bother with a relaxer.
However, I did end up getting one in the summer at the request of someone for a funeral. I really didn't want to but honestly my hair looked a mess. And again in october because I was so frustrated that i was not longer in my transition b/c of the summer relaxer.
Well anyway decided the october one would be the last one because after i got it i was like i don't really like relaxed hair anymore. So yeah hopefully that explains why. Around that time i was really getting bothered about how relaxers are pushed on little girls and we were all expected to get them.

I know that's rather jumbled but i hope you can get my reasoning out of that.

How have you managed to avoid breakage, mainly?
Um I haven't avoided breakage, i think the end of last year my hair stared breaking :( And when I started I think my hair was breaking as well. I believe that it's still okay though because I protective style 90% of the time.
Oh and I think trimming helps, I trim a chunk of hair off so that probably gets rid of some of most breakage.

Do you use protein treatments?
I do mild protein treatments with mayo and eggs. I've used a cheap protein conditioner but I hated it. I've also tried yogurt/egg/mayo mix and I think that worked okay. This coming year I'm stepping up my protein though.

What was your starting length relaxed?
I believe MBL, I don't have any pics from the fall/winter of 08 but these are from earlier in the year.
