What are the benefits of detangling and managing your natural hair with just your hands?

Do you ever detangle your hair with a comb/brush?

TIA!

I have to comb my hair or I would have lots of hair leaving my head. I use a comb when I have lots of conditioner in my hair.

Me too...lately I've been using a denman brush instead of a comb though.
Limiting comb use, I have DEFINITELY seen less breakage and split ends. Once I'm out of the shower, I don't use a comb, and I'll only use a brush to slick down a ponytail

I have a Jilbere Comb which is wonderful for my fine tresses. I have a denman brush as well, but it makes my curls to curly, so I don't use it as often. I don't have any breakage or split ends when I use the comb.

Also, your hair is so pretty in your siggy!

I am usually in extension braids or no-extension twists and using a comb would just get in the way and lead to tangles and a headache. I've just always found it easier to undo my hair w/o a comb.

Usually if I'm in twists or braids, I tend to live in them, so I usually undo and then redo immediately, one at a time. No comb is ever used or needed for this.

The only time I will use a comb is if I plan to wear my hair out say in an afro puff. Because my hair stays untangled in braids or twists, I don't find myself needing to detangle my hair at all with a comb, in the sense of taking sections and removing caught up hair. I simply just apply SCurl so that my hair is slippery and comb through.

The benefits I've found doing this is I don't pull on my hair, don't get tangles, and my hair doesn't break. A comb especially while undoing twists would lead to knots that I'd have to break off coz I'd get too cranky to have patience with them. I do better going easy with my fingers.

I've heard other people doing this - when do you wash/DC? Do you do that right before you redo them, one at a time, or do you just redo them whenever, or what? I COULD see myself doing this, it's just - when I'm DC'ing - esp. when I'm using ayurvedic powders - I'm paranoid about getting everything rinsed out of my hair....

I redo my extensions/twists one by one, the partings take so long to do I don't want to redo them all together! Personally with the extensions I wash them after a month then towel dry, cut off the ends then redo them one by one with new hair. I use a comb to make sure no fluff is caught in them. I do the same with the twists only more often because my hair isn't that long. I tried redoing the twists without combing but my hairs memory is so strong they all end up sqiggly because they're stuck in the same shape.

Now the original question. I tried hand detangling, it didn't work. I rarely comb my hair, only once I've parted it and I'm about to plait or twist it. I never comb it in bulk or when it's wet, I use the denman for that. I've never really tried I just don't think it'd work well.

I have heard of some naturals the only detangle with their fingers, using a comb/brush sparingly.

I tend to find that the less I detangle, the more defined my hair is when I wash in between detangling sessions.

However there are some naturals who don't use a comb or brush ever... and I really want to know the benefits they are getting from this over an extended period of time.

honestly since my big chop I haven't had detangling problems. I am not sure if its is because my hair is so short or because I am no longer battling two textures. The only time I have to really detangle is if I do a coil out. Other than that I finger comb under running water. I mainly use a shower comb or denman brush to distribute product or to clump.

Does that help at all?

I wash/DC with them in whenever, not necessarily before I redo them. And I redo them whenever, usually when I am sitting watching TV and only if they need it, and again one by one. I love the feel of the shower spray on my head so when I wash, condition or DC, I rinse and rinse till no froth is coming out of my hair. I squeeze and squeeze and squeeze, both when I apply products and when I rinse. Don't forget I also dunk my head in a solution of ACV as a final rinse. I've never had a problem with residue.

I'm a transistioner since March 2008. I tried the no-comb for about a year while relaxed and the meshing and tangling drove me crazy. I had growth but it took too many hours to get my hair together for bunning...I'd hate to think what would happen now without combing:nono:!
I'd love to see and hear from those who are successful with it and how it's done.

I tend to do this when I'm wearing extension braids or twists. As long as I just keep redoing each section as needed, I can for for months even years w/o ever using a comb.

Right now I'm in twists and I'm going into my 3rd week in them. I just uncoil the two strand twist, then untwist each strand and separate the strands, and then re-retwist. I don't do them all in one sitting. I do them as time allows so they're never all completely out. I usually do this while watching TV so I don't have to give up anything for this.

Here's an example of me undoing a twist and finger-combing just before re-twisting:

i only use a comb to part my hair and i run a detangling brush over the top to smooth it down. when i co-wash which is mostly every day i split my hair down the middle and put lots of conditioner in and finger comb all around..bathe..then finger comb while rinsing it out. The thing i have noticed is that i dont lose a pound of hair anymore. i saw on youtube dr.akbari a hair specialist said that when we comb our hair we think that its just shedded hair but its actually hair that we're pulling out and dont realize

OP...I think it's going to be the rare natural who doesn't comb or brush their hair at all, esp w any length. You have to remove the shed hair or the hair that's getting ready to fall out (this is what I think Akhbari is talking about. mentioned above...if you have a healthy scalp and not yanking like mad, healthy new hair shouldn't comb out) or you will end up w/ more (not less) tangles and breakage. Of course, not separating the strands and using tons of conditioners which contain wax is the sure road to dreadlocks.

i do use a detangling brush on my hair when in the shower once a week when i shampoo....

besides that when i co-wash every other day or daily i just gently finger comb my hair.

i feel like my hair benefits from the weekly brushing because it detangles my hair thoroughly which in the end helps keep it from breaking from too many knots. I only comb my hair when i am getting it straightened (blow out) and occasionally when it is straight.
