Hi OP...I'm 4a natural. I have no chemicals in my hair whatsoever. And I'm all black (you guys know what I mean by "all black".)
My hair is almost full MBL. I hope you are successful in helping your cousin free her mind from this stereotype that has plagued us black women for decades.

Thanks Pink Skates for your positive comment. This idea that black girls cant grow their hair is one of the many stereotypes that have been embedded in the black community. One of the many reasons i joined LHCF is because its challenging these social constructions of the black community. As well, thanks to everyone who has posted links Fotki profiles i will def. send them to my cousin to look at to encourage her that she can grow her hair to any lengths. I didn't want imply girls with 3ish hair doesn't count. Again, I appreciate all the responds.

Thanx, miss lys and miss yoli for reminding me that there is fotki stalking to be done!

But yeah, if your cuz is still don't inspired after looking thru all these links then she is a lost cause. You can only let go of old ways if you want to.

You are very welcome.
And I totally understand where your cousin is coming from; because two decades ago I felt exactly the same way about my regular ole' black girl nappy hair. And it's a great thing that you are taking the time to help her with her hair frustrations.

So true. I'm not mixed and my hair is in the 3's.
I totally understand where ur coming from and ur hair is beautiful and I';m sure it took hard work to get it as beautiful as it is,

BUT!

for OP's cousin and for many, u fit the "stereotype" of what a "mixed" person looks like and what type of hair they have. I personally, do not subscribe to this thinking because I know we come in all shades and textures mixed or not. I think that for most people when they see someone who looks like you with a hair texture like yours the natural assumption is that you are "mixed" and discredit your "hair efforts"

I agree with your cousin. I see many mixed women on here or women that look like they have some traces of something with long hair, but not too many darker non mixed sistahs with long hair.

my question is.. is it gonna take a natural person double the time to have length that is noticeable (da hang)? I dont know tons of natural females with long natural hair. Here in atlanta, I see many nappy short fros, dreads etc thats it.

I asked a question several weeks ago with no answer about how to smooth the edges of cnapp hair and no one responded. I am hating being natural for the second time. My edges are nappy and the new growth is wavy. I would not have an issue with the rest of my hair if I could get the hair line to smooth down. GEls, creams, wax, etc do not work.. I hate this!:wallbash:

It's called shrinkage. We don't look like we have long hair until it's stretched. So we get the rap that we can't grow our hair. Flat iron it and it's a totally different story. So it seems it takes us longer unless we constantly add heat to stretch it out which ends up damaging your hair if you're not careful. To answer your question about the edges, use castor oil for thickening and coconut to soften. Castor oil lays my hair down and so does shea butter.

is there anyone on this board with around 4a type hair past armpit length not permed or texturized just natural?

i was showing my cousin this board and she made a comment that kinda struck me! she said " i wonder how many girls are not mixed on that board with long hair" my cousin is a teenage girl and we have totally different hair types.
its easy for me to show her pictures of girls with similar texture to mine thats long.but her hair really has no curl definition. i was searching and searching through Fotki to find someone similar to her type so she can use them as a hair idol. i wanted to express how hard it was to find more than a handful of girls without permed hair, dark skin(yes i said it) with long hair.
so, once again...
is there anyone on this board with around 4a type hair past armpit length not permed or texturized just natural hair?
Pleas post a reply in this thread, so i can show my cousin.

thanks!

There a MANY of us. Check out the 4b registry thread as well. I am a 4b/a..no relaxer.

There are many on this board with very long, natural type 4 hair. :yep:

Nay comes to mind first since she is one of my hair idols. Unless she's keeping it at waist, her 4a hair is probably tailbone length or longer by now. :) And didn't Faith have waist length, natural 4b hair?

I did have it MBL about 2" from waist then I relaxed it and got to my waist with it relaxed. But there are many women...it's not that uncommon ;)
