*** Setting To Success 2018 Challenge ***

This post may be a bit premature since I haven't decided if this is going to work for me.
Is it way too late to slide in here?
Eight years natural...a bc and another bc 4 years later...I have satin roller, magnetic roller, flexi rods and perm rods. I've had them all for years and never used them. I want to keep my hair stretched without the routine of twisting so often. When my twists frizz up I can't really keep them in without looking a mess. If my rod set frizzes I can just wear a bun or something for a week.
This weekend I'll be doing my first roller set since my relaxer days.
I hope I can pull it off.
If I pull it off I'll do it as often as I can.
I'm trying to get this last couple of inches to waist length before fall, and although what I've been doing has been working for me, I'm looking for a less time-consuming way this time.

Nope, slide on in. It's an open challenge, so one can join at any time....no real rules, just use some form of rollers at least once a month. Welcome!

I'm dropping out of this challenge for 2018 until I heal my scalp. I think sitting under the dryer while setting is drying out my scalp  And that is causing my crown to thin.

Of course I will be dropping in to check out all of the beautiful hair.

No worries Sis! I can vouch for sure that sitting under the hooded dryer will definitey focus that heat right on your crown.....and then being under there for 1 to 2 hours at that! I no longer sit under the dryer for my sets. I usually just air dry them...but then again my sets only take a few hours of air drying since I mostly braid the bulk of the hair and put flexi rods on the ends.

I hope you heal your scalp! @faithVA

Does anyone use a table top hard bonnet hair dryer that you can recommend? One with a strong air flow and one that can get very warm but not too hot?

I don't want a standing dryer: I travel enough to want a table top dryer first.

I'm looking at old ones on Ebay because one thread said a Lady Dazy or something was great. Anyone know which one?

Any very warm, strong air flow table top would work.

Thanks so very much for any help. I hope to purchase ASAP.

Here’s my latest rollerset. I rolled Mohawk style using my hourglass rollers pink and blue rollers. I used it’s a 10 leave in and Paul Mitchell serum and rolled. Sat under my beloved pibbs for 40 min and pressed my hair straight using my FHI flat iron on 370 degrees.

I plan to set again on Thursday night because I have a bday celebrations for my girlfriends Friday and Saturday and I never wear my hair out.

This time I only going to use the leave in and save the serum for before flat ironing. I’m also going to purchase the sedu 1 1/2 inch flat iron and see how I like it

I'm popping in out of lurk mode to share a perm rod set I did. I used aloe vera juice and lotta body foaming mousse. I sat under my soft bonnet dryer for an hour and 15 minutes. I loved the way that my hair looked but I didn't like how dry it felt. I'm going to be experimenting with products to try and achieve a moisturized rollerset. Any product suggestions for moisture retention?00100sPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180427155512639_COVER-612x816.jpg

The set is so pretty!
For a more moisturized set, you can put a few squirts of a moisturizer/leave in in a spray bottle diluted with water and spray each section before applying the perm rod. Follow it up with a moisturizing styler.

Some moisturizer suggestions:
Camille Rose moisture milk
Curls Creme Brule
Curls Blueberry Leave in
Oyin Hair Dew

Moisturizing styler:
Camille Rose Aloe Whipped Butter Gel

My best and most moisturized flexi rods set have came from this combo:
Camille Rose Moisture milk and aloe whipped butter gel. However, it takes a long time to dry....But the moisture and hold was bananas.

Thank you! And your hair is gorgeous btw

How long did it last? I was gonna suggest flipping your head upside down and putting on a bonnet. But I see this is an old post. LOL
For truth it only looked good the first day. I proceeded to wear it up Monday and Tuesday the I washed it that Wednesday and wore wash n go for the rest of week. I will continue to try sets at least once a month. Hopefully I figure it out at some point.

I'm trying a rollerset today. I decided to try oiling my scalp to see if that keeps my scalp from drying out.

After deep conditioning with TGIN Honey Mask, I spritzed my hair with my leave-in until it was saturated. I rollerset it. I meant to time it but didn't. As I parted each section, I oiled the part. I also used Carol's Daughter Honey Mimosa on my ends to try to keep my ends from drying out.

I have finally graduate to all pink rollers :yay: If I can get rollersetting to work out, I will buy the 1 1/2 inch rollers and use them for the middle section.

I'm under the dryer for 45 minutes. Then I will put water on my scalp and oil it again and sit under the dryer for another 30.

The curlformers get my hair straighter but I think because my ends are exposed they incur more damage. I think the magnetic rollers protect my ends but I need to practice getting a good stretch.

I can finally get my hair in an updo when my hair is flat ironed but I will have to see what I can do with roller set hair. It may not quite be long enough.

Will post back around 6:30.

I recently bought the glamour bag of the barrel curlformers because the set I have currently is second hand and falling apart. I've been wary about getting them because they're so expensive, but also the set I have don't grip at my roots the way I would like (like with the regular sized ones). Ideally I'd prefer that they grip the roots like with the regular size but be large enough to hold more hair.

These new ones were definitely too loose. They could hold more hair but they'd lose their shape and they slip and slide down the hair. I'm just... not impressed. I'm glad I tried it out with the glamour pack instead of paying over $70 just to be disappointed. I'm still going to use these, but just in the same way Ive been using my old set, which is to cut time on my regular curlformer sets. So it seems curlformers won't be my go to setting roller and am still searching for an easier alternative with similar results.
