Helpfulness of YouTube

How helpful has YouTube been to you during your HHJ? Do you think that it as valuable as a source as books, LHCF, etc?

And what kind of hair-related YouTube videos are most helpful to you (ie--product reviews, styling tutorials, appliance reviews, inspirational videos of other long-haired BW)?

YouTube is a necessity for me. I primarily use it for product reviews and rarely style ideas.

it's good for different processes but that's it for me really.

usually i just see natural girls getting dominican blowouts and talking about how amazing their hair moves or chicks who do their hair themselves and have TERRIBLE hair, like omg. like fried, dyed, and gross

yes it has been helpful, especially the tutorials on how to do certain hairstyles. Seeing it done is better than reading how to do it in a book.

I use it mostly for DIY recipes and hair talk

Every time I try to follow a hair style tutorial my hair ends up looking cray cray LOL

I love YT for inspiration, and learning from either peoples experiences. I love the creativity that a lot of YTers put into their videos.

Youtube videos helped me learn how to install my own braids. I'm sure I've saved over $700 so far this year from braiding my own hair.

Youtube is just as essential, if not more essential, than hair forums or books IMO. Simply because I'm a visual person, I like to see results in person and it's easier to learn that way. When I first started taking care of my hair I would watch purely for inspiration and watch people's regimens. Nowadays I mostly watch for styling tutorials and more specific product reviews.

I just use it for inspiration. I like videos of naturals especially those in the 4a -4b category who are MBL and beyond. It's just to keep me focused on my natural HJ. I'm more focused on the health and length of their hair than anything else so I haven't tried any of the styles or products they demonstrate. The reason for that is I'm not a PJ so I just stick to what I know and I'm not that interested in anything other than a bun or simple updo for now.

Youtube is very useful.

It offers endless- Styling &Techniques options, Product reviews and Comparison videos.

Sometimes I do have to fast forward through the ramblings, but overall Youtube is a gem (I am a visual learner).

I use it to learn how others' hair acts and reacts. I know my hair, but no one's hair is like mine. It has taught me to not say things like "X technique don't break hair!" because I've seen on YT that X technique has possibility to do so, so it has taught me to not speak generally because there's nothing general about hair.

I don't watch product recommendations unless I know the YouTuber's hair properties. I sub to all kinds of hair (straight, kinky, curly, white, black, hispanic, asian) to note the differences in technique and who does what and what tends to work for whom.

I use YT for DIY (all kinds of stuff actually not just hair stuff lol) style inspirations and make up tutorials (I know not hair related)

I don't watch any product reviews because they are usually long winded and I lose interest fast lol

But I'll watch 5 different people do a twist out or wash n go LOL everyone has different methods and products use so I like to see what works and how and then try it on myself :)

I don't find YT very useful. I've been on hair boards since 2002, so there's only so much I can learn at this point.

I still subscribe to people, but I don't follow the vlogs too closely.

HI:). When I started my HHJ two years ago, YT, along with hair magazines were my go to sources of information. As an educator by profession, I am constantly learning from all kinds of mediums. Since I also learn visually for the most part, YT continues to be a sorce of inspiration and information. The only thing I can't seem to find on YT are videos geared towards people my age, 40+, who are also on a healthy hair journey. I have found all kinds of threads here on LHCF, so I am enjoying all of the people I have met through all avenues that are helping me achieve my hair goals!:yep:

I like it for hair styling ideas. I do wish there were more pressed tutorials with hot combs. More flipped out videos. More here is the picture, and this style looks just like it tutorials but since I don't contribute, I appreciate they've got. I would like a youtuber whose real hair looks like she came just from the shop but she does it herself every week-every month in a combination of different straight and natural styles if anyone knows one like that already. Or a youtuber who specializes and showing you how to style with marcel irons :D . ***Ahhh one day***. I would take the plunge but i need my privacy lol

I’m an anomaly in that I avoid YT like the plague. During my entire HHJ, I’ve only seen 5 videos – one kimmaytube video on shampooing and detangling, one a LHCF member did showing a self-trim, one on rollersetting, an Ecostyler gel review (where the girl repeatedly said it smelled like “Win-dess”), and a weird twist-out tutorial from an overly tired, attitudinal woman. IMO, the best of the lot were kimmay’s and the LHCF member’s because they were fast paced and contained no talking. For the life of me, I cannot take the “sit and watch someone talk to a camera” thing.

Since my main interest lies in product reviews, I tend to reach for the LHCF search feature and relevant blogs rather than YT.

YT is super helpful!! Without it couldnt know how to do simple things like flat iron my hair the correct way.

I dont watch for styles, I watch for information and inspiration.

I definitely would not have learned to care for my natural hair without YouTube hair tutorials.

For every stage of growth, or boredom I've discovered a video on a new hair style.

I skip those product reviews because I'm not interested in buying/ trying any more hair, or makeup products.

I started watching Youtube videos for inspiration. Fusion of Cultures inspired me to start my long-term transition. Now I mostly watch for style tutorials, I get my hair information from the forums. I don't trust youtube product reviews since a lot of them are sponsored.

I started watching more you tube after i joined lhcf. Some people described their regimens on here or has a channel on there so i started getting visuals from there like if I didn't know how to moisturize and seal i typed it in and learned that way. I'm on there for any type of hair video whether its styling or regimens. Whether natural or relaxed , I only got a a few for comedy and one for nails but mostly hair :) it was very helpful in my hhj because it provides me with a visual and I'm a visual person. My favorite one right now is all f destiny, she seems ver down to earth and doesn't try to be perfect on camera

I would not have made it this far into my transition without YT. I love watching it for inspiration (although there aren't many CURRENT transitioners that I've found). :nono:

I like to look for those who have similar hair textures as me which helps me see what I'm working towards. I also look for product reviews, style ideas, and hair talk. I feel like the vloggers are my girlfriends! :yep:

I love YT! I can get information, inspiration and ideas from the videos I watch when I'm there, and between it and LHCF, I have learned tons of valuable information that have improved my HHJ around greatly in the last two years. So Yay YT as far as I'm concerned!
