4B Naturals that Press Occationally

I just ordered some KeraCare Pressing Creame and it should be here any day now. I'm planning on pressing my hair within the next week or so for a length check.

Thing is, I haven't tried to press my hair since going natural over 5 months ago. So for the 4B Natural ladies I'd like your advice. Please.

Do I have to blow dry before pressing?

Does the dryer have to have a comb attchment?

Is it anywhere near a good idea to use a flat iron after pressing to get the hair super straight?

What are your steps for pressing your hair?

Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.

OP- you will have alot of fun in that Mwedzi thread. Hair porn for days lol....

I flat ironed my hair for the first time last month, and even though it made me realize that I don't like my hair straight, it was a success. My hair got SUPER straight, straighter than I've ever seen it in my life, even in my relaxed days. My DH kept touching it cuz he couldn't believe it was actually my hair lol.

Here's what I did/what I learned:

-I first clarified my hair, then DC'd overnight with a super moisturizing DC. In the am, I detangled well, rinsed out the DC, applied my leave-in, and put my hair in about 12 braids to dry.

-When my hair dried, I undid each braid, applied heat protectant to each section, then blow-dried. If I had it do again, I would NOT blow dry. It made my hair dry, and honestly, I don't think it was necessary to get my hair straight.

-I used my maxiglide on 7 to flat iron. I flat ironed in very small sections, and thoroughly applied an additional heat protectant- IC fantasia this time- to each section before doing 2 passes with the flat iron.

I've attached pics of the "before" and "after" lol. I hope this is helpful. Good luck, and remember to post pics so we can see how it turned out!

First Straightening Attempt Since Going Natural- RESULTS :(

Ok. I washed. Conditioned. Blowdried. Used heat protectant then used my electric hot comb and this is what I got. I don't know what I did wrong but I won't be straightening again for a long time (5-6 months) and I won't be doing it myself.

Can't help but wonder if I did something wrong.

It looks like you got your hair straight but the ends came out bushy...

Maybe it was the electric hot comb? When I get my hair done she will use the hot comb lightly but always go over it with a flat iron (this straightens my ends). You could also use a little serum or product to help you get the ends straighter.

Don't give up!

Somebody on here is using it..One of the reviews on Amazon:

I used this product durring my transition from relaxed to natural hair as I wore my hair straight durring my transition when not in braids. A little bit of product goes a long way. Did a good job of sheilding my hair from the heat of the pressing comb. Hair was soft and shiny as well. A bounus.

I've been natural for almost 6 months and will be re-ordering the product to press hair straight for a length check. A shout out to my ladies of the LHCF

I'm not really sure what my hair type is, but I just flat iron, I threw my hotcomb away years ago.

Wash, condition, blowdry with comb attachment, then iron in small sections using the chase method. Using the products listed in my siggie.

I'm sure you dont have to blow dry b/c there are other ways to stretch, I just do because its easier for me, saves time, and I dont mind blowdrying my hair.

I DC my hair (with steam), braid my hair in sections with moroccan oil. Finally, I use whipped shea butter on my hair from root to tip and flat iron with my maxi-glide.

That is too funny that you pulled that. That's actually my review for the KeraCare!!!! I posted that review right when I re-oreded the KeraCare LOL

I did use a flat iron after the hot comb didn't really do it...my ends were still very bushy and I couldn't get them straight.

LOL I got quoted! LOL! :)

Possibilities ...
- Hot comb might not have been on the right temp for your hair
- Did you use the back of the comb? Your hair looks like it was tooth combed but the back of the comb is the part that does the press.

There are lots of pressing/ironing tutorials on ytube that you can use to learn technique if you decide to do it it on your own next time.

The electric pressing comb never gets your hair straight enough. I don't think they get hot enough. I tried them early on my natural journey and never could get my ends straight. Its good that you are taking a break & not thinking about anything drastic (like snipping the ends)...You can use that time to study some more on products/technique/regimen...there are plenty threads out there for 4b naturals who straighten. I would like to provide more helpful info in the future, but I'm on a break from giving too much tips on straightening until I can get my regimen completely together.
