RollerSetting for Length/Health Challenge

Count me in! This is my standard regimen; the only thing I'd do differently on this challenge is to not comb out my curls.

When: Every Wash Day (1-2x's a wk)
Why: Healthier Hair and Smooth Ends
Where: Home
How: After poo/dc use Lacio Lacio or Silicon mix leave in and Mizani thermasmooth serum on dripping wet hair. Once hair is dry use Mizani oil shyne. Pin curl at night.

ETA: Tweeked on How - Added serum on wet hair

Hi Ladies,
I definitely want to join this challenge! Last year, Aug/September, I started my hair journey to bra-strap length with co-washing, stretching my relaxer to 9-10 wks, moisturizing and sealing hair and ends daily, using leave in and heat protectant when I was blow drying, a 1 min reconstructor, adding megatek w/oil to fill in thin areas and increase thickness (starting to add ovations to the mix in 2009). With my last relaxer, I started my rollersetting challenge. My hair has been looking great, I will post my update pic soon!

Who: Relaxed (9-10 Wks)
What: Plastic Mesh Rollers
When: Twice a Week
Why: Less Heat + Less Breakage + Less Manipulation = Thinker, Healthier Hair!
Where: At Home, Occasionally The Dominican Salon
How: CoWash, DC, Spray Leave-In/Heat Protect Mixture, Add Moisture/Oil??? (see below), Rollerset and Dry for 30-40 mins. Unroll, Pin Up, Go to Sleep with Satin Wrap.

HELP: :wallbash: My hair is coming out a little hard though after the roller setting, so I think it is two things. I need to use my 1 minute reconstructor less often (maybe only once a month), and I spray less of my heat protectant and leave in, start adding more moisture to my hair as I roll it. I added some oil spray to it last night when I washed and rollerset and I think it definitely helped. I also ordered a bottle of Lacio, after several recommendations, so I will start that with my next time out and see if I see some improvement.

Happy Hair!!!

OH and how and when do you saran wrap your hair? I have NEVER heard of that!!! Is it still in rollers or after you take them out?

Thanks!

I'm in the oct/mt challenge and like to use either product nightly, do you think i will still be able to join and use the products nightly and maybey rollerset twice a week without too much buildup from the oct/mt?

Hi Ladies,
.

Yes, you may want to back off the protein for a while and up your moisturizing DC. Lacio Lacio would soften your roller-set. You don't need to add anything to it. Probably a little serum or natural oil once your rollerset is dry.
Saran wrap is combing out your curls and wrapping your hair. Distribue a dime size of serum or oil into your hair and cover the saran wrap tightly around your head. Sit under the dryer for 10-20 minutes for a sleek look.

I've been rollersetting since September but had major dryness issues and w/ my old hard top - even at top heat - it took about an hour and 45 minutes to dry - not so sure that promoted health :ohwell:. Anyways - fast forward a few months and:
- I now have a pibbs
- my moisture retention is up
- my porosity is in check
- practice and youtube tutorials have turned me into a rollersetting pro (roller size depends on style i desire)

I'm ready to roll!!! :lachen: Sorry, couldnt help myself :look: - I'll post starter pics soon.

Oh! 1 more thing - I use Salerm 21 Leave In and NTM Daily Silk Touch!

 Well done though on finding a routine that works for you. I would love a pibbs but I don't even know where I would get one (I'm in Alberta, Canada). Can't wait to see your pics

Count me in! I actually have already been doing this on my own and I am currently rocking flexi rods so this should be fun

Who: Naturals
What: Rollersetting each wash.
When: 1 X 2 per wk
Why: It makes my hair grow and its very low maintanence which I love!
Where: Home
How: wash/condition (use various products from aveda to aphoghee to pantene), then dc with mayo then use ors lock n twist gel and aphoghee leave in. Apply aveda brilliant to each piece as I on roll.

Hey Tinkerbell, what is your hair type? I have flexi rods but I'm not sure I want my hair that curl. I fear it would end up knotting which is what I'm trying to avoid.

OH and how and when do you saran wrap your hair? I have NEVER heard of that!!! Is it still in rollers or after you take them out?

Thanks!

Girrrrrrrrrrrrrl, saran wrapping saved my hair. You do it after the hair is dry and you have taken out the rollers. Some people use a light hairdress but I use a drop of Fantasia IC Serum. Comb out the curls and wrap your hair normally and secure with bobby pins (at least, I do that).

Then get a long sheet of saran wrap and wrap your head really tight with it, and then get a shorter sheet and secure the crown of your head. Sit under the dryer for 10-15 minutes and when you come out and take down your hair, you'll get flat-iron results without the flat-iron damage. :lick:

Sometimes, when it's been a humid day and my hair has frizzed up, I'll do the saran wrap treatment again. It's like it compresses the hair and makes it silky.

MsMontoute, you will love the lacio lacio. It gives my natural hair more movement. If your curls are hard it could be too much product or too much protein like you said. I will be only using the lacio lacio to roll and will apply the serums and oils after the hair is dry.

Iluvsmuhgrass, what is CTS?

Do you saran wrapping ladies have pics of this?

Of what my hair looks like after the process or of what the process looks like? I'll do a tutorial on my Saturday wash day if you like. :yep:

ok ladies, i did my first self rollerset yesterday, it took me 38 minutes because I made so many mistakes, had to redo several rollers, i used grey big rollers and a few purples, and it came out so nice and fluffy

So i am so down with rollersetting now that I can do it myself.

I am in!!!

Who: Relaxed
What: every five days
When: been at it for almost a month
Why: hair dries straighter, body, volume, my wrap holds its shape longer
Where: at home

Im in, please add me.

Who-Relaxed
What-On purple magnetic rollers(I need to buy some)
When-Once to twice a week
Why-I like the way my looks and feels
Where-Home and the Dom Salon
How-Im still trying to figure out the perfect mix. Im currently using water, serum and ORS wrap/setting lotion. Sit under the dryer, remove rollers and then either wrap or pin curl.

Ladies, I need some suggestions on a roller mixture. TIA

You're in :) 38 minutes isn't that bad..lol ;)

BGT, I'm wondering if you have pics of the saran wrapping, the process?

Shana' I would recommend diluted lacio lacio and just roll. If you really need some frizz control just add some serum :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I will pick some up before the new year.

I'm gonna rollerset Saturday morning for a wedding. I'll take some pics during the process and post on my Fotki. I'll PM you when I do it. :drunk:

I don't see anything like this posted...if it is please link me. I did a search and nothing...
Anywho, I am thinking of cutting back on the direct heat (yes even from pure ceramic irons..lol) and trying just straight rollersetting. I rollerset my natural hair on Friday and it felt so good. It felt strong and it was very strong. That good feeling went away as soon as I flatironed. Don't get me wrong it was still soft but not as strong to the touch.

Who: Naturals AND Relaxed
What: Rollersetting each wash.
When: Your next wash (if possible)
Why: I believe it promotes healthier hair, especially the ends
Where: Salon or at home
How: Get some rollers and get cracking..plus a good leave in, some serum maybe, rattail comb, wide tooth comb..whatever you need.

Any takers? Lets do it for 3 months to see if we see a marked improvement. I think we will. :)
At the end of 3 months we can re-evaluate.

You can post your regimen, what you use to rollerset, any techniques that may help, etc.
And even if you don't want to join the challenge and have some tips/pointers please post them :)

Forgive me I'm new to this :-( count me in!

Who: Relaxed
What: Roller set after every weekly wash and treatment
When: "Me Time" aka Sunday afternoons
Why: I've always wanted long healthy hair...why not join this challenge
Where: Home
How: After my weekly treatment session...spray Aphogee Green Tea Reconsturizer and Aphogee leave in conditioner. Roller set, oil scalp and conrow hair. (I'm growing my hair under my curly instant weaves. I like using instant weaves because it does no damage to my hair and because its texture is curly; I never have to worry about flat ironing my hair to blend with the weave. Cornrowing the front and taking it out every morning gives my hair a wavy look that blends with the weaves curly texture)

This is my most common way to do

Who-Natural
What-30 blue mesh rollers(2")
When-Twice a week
Why-Gives a lot of body to my waist length hair + my DH loves it
Where-Once home, once in salon
How-I now perfecty how to do it, but with waist length I need some help to roll the hair (at home, will be a friend or DH). I'm currently using water with a few setting lotion. Sit under a hard hat dryer for 1 and half hour. I leave free flowing

Sometimes I airdry on much bigger rollers

About saran wrapping; I actually first heard about it from watching Macherieamours' video on youtube, the link is here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDOPWlDylV4

It gives your hair the flat ironed look, without flat ironing. Works well, I do it in the dryer for 10-15 minutes.

Well thanks for the tips about lacio lacio, where do you buy yours?

I'm in. I decided my hair needs a change for 09. Im shooting for midback or waistlength and I don't think bunning 90percent will get me there in the healthiest state.

Who: Relaxed
What: 1x/week.
When: Sunday or Friday
Why: Less frizzy hair, healthiest ends, shine, body (lord knows I don't need more body), sexy sleek hair
Where: home in my bathroom
How: wash with ja comeback or CON, DC with NTM daily deep, kenra, or nexxuss (whichever my hand touches first), detangle in shower, apply chi, aphogee green tea, aphogee pro-vitamin, and lacio lacio (a nickel size of each product), bottle of pure water, and grey and magenta rollers.

I'm in.

Who: Relaxed
What: Rollerset after each wash
When: 1-2 times weekly
Why: Healthy thick hair
Where: Home or Salon
How: Wash w/ KC Hydrating Poo (or Joico K-Pak), Deep Condition 30+ mins, apply leave-ins (Mizani Thermastrength, etc), Rollerset hair using KC Foam Wrap/Mizani Setting Lotion (harder curls), Aphogee Pro-Vitamin Leave-in, and distilled water.

has anyone figured out how to apply their leave in so they don't get crunchy sets? this is why i stopped rollersetting!!

I stopped using a leave in conditioner. Try the 2 products in my sig. The NTM cream and some serum. My hair feels silky smooth.

The leave in you are using is the problem. Your hair should never come out crunchy. You should dilute your leave-in in a spray bottle and spray on your hair. After it runs out I would suggest switching to a lighter leave in.

Thank you ladies. I've been wanting to try the NTM but can not seem to find it anywhere!?!? It's strange it happens whenever I use anything but water. The leavein I have now is for repairing/ alleviating damage my hair suffered and it is really good at that so I am reluctant to just drop it but I was experimenting with using less and less (I think after I saw how good it was I became VERY heavyhanded with it) and it seemed to get less and less crunchy. I wonder if mixing it with a butter would help? Also the same thing happens if I put anything but water in my spray bottle or any leave in at all. What is a light leave in that you think is good, maybe I am using heavy leave ins?

I have just been using diluted lacio lacio. 0.5 capful lacio lacio : 1.5 capful water and it comes out very soft. I would never have thought to dilute my leave in if not for luckiestdestiny.
