Taren's catching heat on YT

I think the big thing really is as many people said reviews vs ads....

You think Beyonce can even pick up a box of Nice and Easy hair color in public without Loreal suing the mess out of her...! **** the woman probably needs approval to change her hair color! You won't see Bey saying she loves Covergirls new foundation thats for sure!

When you endorse a product the way celebs do you are entering a CONTRACT that says you will put your face to THIS product and not been seen using the competitors. I know someone caught some shade for a phone deal they endorsed and then was seen with an iPhone....

If Kinky Curly pays you to say you love their products... you better not say 2 months later you were using that Baby Butter Cream! I think the companies are being SMART in what they are doing because if I'm paying someone for a video I'm making up a contract and they better not mention my competitor ever! Most people aren't going to do that so what they are hoping for is that people simply say they like it and make a video or they don't and don't make a video...

These people sending products know what it takes to run a business (the bigger companies at least)... They know the limits of what they can and cannot do and I don't think anyone is being taken advantage of...

WOW- first off I agree with AE points. This shows true maturity on her part. After that whole drama with them and Kimmaytube I thought AE was leaning more towards Taren.

But honestly Taren was unprofessional and did not help her image with this video.

The more people comment the more I am beginning to see that. Yes Taren may have had some valid points but she went about it the wrong way by posting a video about it.

This will hurt her in the long run.

Taren keeps making these rants about money and her single baby mama drama is really hurting her image. And in order to make a business out of this image is everything.

Yes and when I was watching her blog tv recording I was like "BE QUIET ALREADY!!!!" hahahahaha...if you want to get your money behind the scenes then DO YOU!!!! I believe most vloggers aren't stupid and really didn't need for her tell them to know their worth and capitalize on what they can offer.

And this is why YT reviews are helpful. Real people, real experiences, real opinions.

I feel some kind of way about refusing to give a negative review about a product that was sent, and choosing only to review products liked. An then feeling some sort of entitlement about the whole thing. And this entitlement thing is something I have witnessed with podcasters, too.

I have seen some start out actually slamming others for asking for PayPal donations to support their efforts, only to do the same thing themselves after podcasting twenty or so episodes. They take on this "I have a life, I am not getting paid to do this, my time is valuable" ish-- look, booboo, nobody told you to pick up the mic and start recording and uploading, so where is this mess coming from? I feel the same way about YTers. If monetization isn't enough then find another way, but don't mess up the vibe on YT. Now I will support efforts with PP donations, simply because I like the programming and realistically, it is a lot of work to produce quality shows. But as soon as a host starts to make me feel guilty for not donating, I will unsubscribe.

Does Taren accept PP donations on a blog? If she doesn't, she should. And if she has that many followers who were donating to support her content, then maybe there would have been no need to do a half-hour rant targeting product companies, which only served to make her look simple and basic, at best.

I don't know who you were talking about but ihustlenation came to mind when you stated that.

This guy is always asking people for donations when HE volunteers to do his weekly show.

I just watched QueenNaturalBeauty's video:yawn:

Anyhoo, she mentioned those Elle and Blair chicks. Taren is no where near that level. These chicks have several major companies behind them paying them and providing them with all kinds of stuff. I am not familiar with their history but obviously at some point in their youtube career, they took it to another level and really started getting paid for what they do. I don't know if Taren is quite there yet but maybe she feels this is the beginning and it's time. We don't know what companies have approached her with offers because she hasn't said and I hope she does not go there. I don't know, I am starting to feel kinda bad for her because I wish she had went about this in a different way but it's too late now.

Wow this thread has a lot of pages to have only started yesterday.

I will say this about Taren, she keeps herself very relevant amongst her followers and her haters.

I hope she will remove this video in the end and then post a follow up video to her fans explaining that she never meant to offend anybody (even if this isn't true). I her and want to see her suceed.

Very true in the majority of cases. But they do get paid to endorse products. Not many, if any celebrities in their right mind would endorse a product publicly for free.

That's not completely true. When you see celebrities going to gifting suites and picking up all types of free goodies (swag) the brands are giving away free stuff in exchange for photos of the celeb holding up the item (or doing something fun with it). Basically its implied endorsement...and a win-win for both the celeb and the brand.

The key word there being 'implied'.

I just tried to sit through her long arse rant with her neck rollin’ and earrings jinglin’ all over the place. I will say she makes some valid points, but her delivery is off-putting to say the least.

She has the right to want compensation for her reviews like her white and Asian YouTube counterparts. But the big difference is you don’t see them making 30+ minute YouTube rants about the unfairness of direct vs. indirect advertising and compensation thereof. Instead, they do their complaining and dealing behind the scenes, while the public at large never knows about any discord. In this day and age with the enormous amount of competition, you simply MUST be business savvy enough to know how to play the game. She definitely should have handled it differently. This rant just makes her look entitled and bitter, even though that may not be the case.

So now I’m wondering if Taren will make a response to all of the response videos. Will she even acknowledge or consider everyone else’s viewpoints, or will she dig her heels in and stand by what she said AND the way she said it?

Hmmmm … to be continued, I’m sure.

But that's all that really matters to the company. On their end its implied endorsement. On the consumers end its "Oh Beyonce was wearing XYZ Shoes! Lemme run out and get some!" The average person doesn't care about the "implied" part.

It will be interesting to see how this all pans out, but she wants to be paid to endorse the product. Not an implied endorsement, but an explicit endorsement in the form of a "review". An honest positive review, when one receives free products, is already an implied endorsement of sorts. I don't think that can be helped. The celebrities in our example don't even need to say anything, just being seen with it is enough.

Again, I hope she gets to monetize her influence in a smart way and as someone else pointed out, I hope she takes down that video for her own sake.

I usually sit back and read comments when stuff like this happens, so I guess I will just say what I feel about this (JUST MY OPINION).

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Kimmaytube is compensated 6 figures ($100,000+) from GOODIE| Hair Accessories. Maybe Taren feels some type of way that she has yet to get that contract, endorsement, pay off, etc for all her hard work and effort. I think Kimmaytube did a review on a hair book (that's all) and Taren has done some many wig reviews, product reviews, interviews, professional photos, and still hasn't made her big break. (Just Saying....)

YouTube is a free account, they shouldn't pay you. GOOGLE has those rights over YT. I do agree w/ AE (and I believe it states it somewhere on YT and G's policy that if you want to get paid then you must set up an account w/ Ad$ense. While Taren does make valid points, I think this video will hurt her chances of her getting paid.

I'm sure Kimmaytube is a great business woman and went, took, and earned her deal. Nothin is just handed to you. Its up to the individual to turn YT into a business...no company will make ur Channel a get $$/business for you.

Taren loves jewerly. I can see a contract between her and a jewerly company if she stays exclusive to only them and brings them clients. It wouldn't hurt for her to draft up an "Affiliate Agreement" and gets her $$ that way. Depending on how big the #'s get..if she is valuable to that company...they will pay her X amount for continuous endorsement.

"Not a business woman" but it feels like from a business perspective - this video is negative press and could hurt a company's sale. I've been a long time subscriber to Taren and she has good videos. If you don't understand the $$$ aspects to YT..don't #rant for your lack of knowledge. I'm sure there is a "Make Money of YouTube For Dummies" book somewhere.

On that note. Back to work.

I do agree with your points but I just wanted to correct some things. Kimmaytube doesn't have a deal with Goodie for hair accessories. She owns a store luvnaturals in which she sells some natural hair products Goody happens to be one of them.

But the point is still the same Kimmaytube created that business as an extension of her youtube channel. And that business opened her to more opportunities (publicity, creating her own product line, etc)

Like you said Taren has yet to do any of those things. Even though in the video she talks about her non profit.

Honestly out of the all the "natural hair vlogger/ bloggers there are only a small portion who have really capitalized this things and made a for real business out of it. The few that come to mind for me are Afrobella, Curlynikki, and Kimmaytube.

Nobody else is really doing it big like that.

Correct me if I'm wrong

WOW Kimmay is getting paid like that???!!!

And to get paid on YT you have to be a partner, which Taren has been for sometime. They give you a small percentage of the money they get from ad sales on your videos.

I can definitely tell that's what she wants. I don't think she (or anyone) should be paid to do reviews. Advertising a product on her own website or an endorsement deal...yes. Reviews...not so much. Like someone else said, magazines receive free products all the time. They're not paid to review them or mention them in the pages of the magazine. But they are paid for the pages those same brands buy to advertise their products. Receiving a free product is not an implied endorsement.

You know what? When I first watched Taren's video I agreed with what she had to say. I still do to an extent, but. . .

she went about this the wrong way and I think the white chick is right. I don't have a problem with a woman all about her paper. If she wanted to take things to the next level she should have just negotiated some contracts with the companies contacting her to endorse products or whatever other kind of deals she's looking for - behind the scenes - and kept it moving.

This whole thing just looks a mess and when you don't have anything, image is *Everything*. Hers needs a new spit and polish after all this.

After watching this video I completely change my opinion about this subject. This lady had a lot of good points. I think it is easy for yt and bloggers to get some big head and think they are a celebrity.

lol she had me dying when she said in real life people don't know who the hell we are, reality check! :lachen:

I only come on these boards to talk about this stuff because people in my real life don't know who the hell Taren or any of these people are.

Maybe Taren can be compensated by a smaller company or a mom and pop weave/wig company. But HUGE companies are not going to give her some endorsement deal.

I honestly take back what I said at Michelle Phan because that chick has over 1 million subs vs Taren barely at 90k. Big difference.

I didn't know who Michelle Phan was and I had to look her up last night and I love her vid's! So nicely edited and the lighting is perfect, her tutorial are great and none of her vid's are long that's always plus, I am going to sub to her :)

SN: Reading all these posts, ya'll have put me hip to a lot of YT's that I didn't know that Aetyea or how ever you spell it, I couldn't get through half a vid of her, too much....I just can't....

This lady is a "lawyer" and doesn't like how Taren came across to her :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74ZXe7fdEz4&feature=share

I swear, everyone is trying to get their 15 mins off Taren's rant.
I don't understand why you'd think that. A great portion of Taren's rant was specifically her talking to fellow beauty vloggers. She even stated in the video, in so many words, that she wanted to put this issue out there for dialogue/discussion. Should they have not responded? Should we all not have anything to say about anything she said in her video?

Besides, the main person in this discussion that wants "their 15 minutes" is Taren. The "lawyer" vlogger is not as concerned about fame as Taren. Obviously so, since she has a career outside of her YT hobby- as a LAWYER.

I would like to see someone who has more than 5k subbies or started making videos this week to respond. I wonder what the 3 other vloggers y'all listed that have contracts with Lacome and other companies to do reviews would say?

Again, I dont make video's and I don't rely on video's to decided if a product is a holy grail. *Logs off to live life*

- I believe denimpixie responded and she has 19,173 subscribers as of two seconds ago. Dawnyele also responded and she has 6,688 subscribers.

- the other 3 vloggers listed might say they got their contracts without having to do a rant video about it.

There are several other vloggers that have more than 5k subbies that have responded. AfricanExport has around 60K I think but she didn't make a video but posted her views on her blog which is basically the same thing.
