how do you enjoy your hair if you protective style 99% of the time?

I understand that protective styling is a great way to retain length but how are you enjoying your hair if you ps all the time?

I feel like since we are all working hard to grow our hair we should be able to enjoy it..if not why are doing so much to grow it?

What's your thoughts ladies?

The fact that I ps all the time makes my reveals that much better. Ps'ing for a month and then length checking isn't as fun as ps'ing for 6 months and then length checking. I guess it's the thrill of finding out that you have way more hair than you thought.

Plus it's always a joy when you can do a ps that you couldn't do previously because your hair was too short. I couldn't do this big textured bun in May but now it's my staple go-to style.

I don't know about the other ladies but I actually enjoy my protective styles. I like playing around with different buns and updos. The whole point of my journey was to have healthier hair where my ponytails didn't look anorexic at the ends. The extra lenght is a welcomed benefit to obtaining healthier hair. Because it is longer and healthier, I am able to play around with different buns and ponytails and I am loving it. I do wear my hair down sometimes, mostly during special occasions or family outings. But I'm too lazy to wear it down and style it all the time. Plus, I can't wrap my hair or sleep pretty for the life of me. I'll rather throw it in an easy, yet cute, updo and be on my way.

I agree with you. I actually had no idea about PS until I actually subscribed to the site in August. I take full advantage of my long hair and wear it out as much as possible. My hair goes up only when I'm stretching a wash (like now) and when sleeping.

I'll enjoy it more when I get to my goal length. I'm over it at the length its at. That's about it for me.

You don't.:cry2: Nah, just kidding!

I'm always in a PS, but I do enjoy my hair on occassion when I wear it in a puff and it's bigger than the last time! And I really don't enjoy PS, but it's a mean to an end.

I'll reserve my real enjoyment when I'm swinging MBL hair!

I'm not enjoying PSing right now. I'm just doing it to get more length. I can't wait until I reach my goal and then I'll wear it out more.

When I bun my hair, I am enjoying it.
Enjoying hair doesn't always mean swinging it around and whatnot.

Didn't think of it like this...i like wearing buns and other ps but it gets boring after a while. I feel like i am PSing so much to help retain length so i can wear it down sometimes..idk i enjoy wearing my hair straight/down.

Yup i agree with this..its great to see the result from PSing..that's why i don't mind it but i can't do it 24/7.

I can understand this...i can relate to a lot of what you wrote.

I think once i get to a certain length this will be me lol...i do ps but only like 4-5 days out of the week.

Personally, I wore PS even before I got on an HHJ. For me PS is just lazy styling and I don't generally have the time and patience to do much more.

To those that wrote they are PSing until they reach their goals: isn't PSing for length like weight loss? The journey to get there is easier than staying there once you reach. Once you achieve your goal length, don't you need to keep PSing to maintain that length or do I misunderstand the concept?

1. I will not enjoy to discover that over the course of one year my hair has retained very little b/c I've been wearing out causing the ends to tangled regularly necessitating that i trim. I know this to be a fact for me. I enjoy seeing 5 inches retention at the end of the year :yep:

2. once you reach your goal you don't have to ps all the time. therefore you can "enjoy" it regularly if wearing your hair out means "enjoyment" to you.

2. Some people love updos so ps-ing is enjoying the hair anyway. Personally I drool at huge luscious buns.

3. I'm of the view that if I want to wear my hair out ever so often just because or for an event, etc. I will.

4. Remember, if your hair doesn't thrive on ps-ing then hey, "enjoy" the hair all the live long day. I see nearly 100% retention with ps-ing and about 50% otherwise.

This makes since and i can agree w/u...i ps but not 99% of the time.

lol ur post made me laugh..i understand how u feel.

I totally agree.

This depends. I'm naturally thin so if I gain 50lbs after I have a baby and lose the weight I won't have to do all that Jennifer Hudson has to do to maintain her weight. See what I mean? If one's hair is super fragile then maybe this applies. However, I suspect that for most it doesn't.

As long as we're healthy hair grows no matter what:yep: PS-ing, for me anyway, is a means of retaining about 80-90% of my length. So if I PS I retain 5 inches a year. Once I reach my goal of waist length I can afford to wear by hair out more and have to trim more regularly and STILL i'd retain at least 2 or 3 inches a year, which still will add length.

Unless you go buck while with your reggie (constant heat, rough combing, etc.) your hair will not only retain but it will get longer even if retention slows down a bit.

I feel that once i reach my goal then i won't ps as much..PSing will always be something i do but as it gets longer i will ps less frequently.

Since I'm not a fan of my length of hair it doesn't bother me to ps. I actually look forward to the buns I'll be able to do with more length.

I PS in styles that I like- low messy buns with deep side parts & sometimes chic topknots so I still look cute.

I kind of think of PSing like maintaining weight- I try to eat "fattening" foods only if I really enjoy them and avoid junk food that I don't care about that much, just eating it cause it's there. I always PS in the house - so that's about half the time right there, including sleeping. I protect my hair by covering it in cold weather outside, putting it up when it's windy, etc. - this is what causes a lot of damage that PS saves.

I wear my hair out a few times a week, and only on days it looks amazing so it's worth it.

If you drink soda every day, it doesn't taste special to you...if you only have it sometimes, and only sodas that you love, it tastes amazing...

The way a person enjoys their hair depends on the person. Most people, like me, do not mind at all whatsoever PS'ing 100% of the time. I see my hair when I wash it every week and while air drying for over an hour. :lachen:

I'll enjoy my hair when I reach my goal. I don't care for the length I'm at now so I don't feel I'm missing anything while I'm wiggin' it.

Some people have never been shoulder length in their life so I could totally understand why they would rather wear their hair out than PS it. It's new to them and they want to enjoy it. When I'm WL, it'll be new to me and then I'll enjoy it. :lick:

For me I enjoy my hair 24/7, not just some of the time. I know my hair is healthy and strong, so I love it no matter what I do to it. Wearing my hair up and/or away is just a preference, as the possibilities are endless, and I love accessories.

Thanks for the responses ladies...everyone made valid points...i guess when my hair grows & my bun gets bigger i may enjoy it more too...not enough to do it all day everyday tho lol...I dont consider braid/twistouts, rollersets, etc protective styles & do those quite often :)

I love buns! Wearing a nice bun is more fun than wearing my hair down. Loose, long hair hardly catches my eye anymore, but when I see a huge bun, my stare probably burns a hole through the back of those White Pentecostal ladies heads, lol. Whenever I see a sista around here with an amazing bun - it's always fake

I PS with styles I like, that suit my face. I've never liked wearing my hair down too often. I keep my hair long because I like having options, but I prefer protective styles (as long as they're cute).

I love my buns! I like the fact that they keep getting bigger each year! :yep:

However, now that I'm BSL for the first time in my life, I do wear my hair out more.

i want to be able to enjoy a protective style. i just don't think my hair is long enough to have a good looking protective style. once it gets to BSL and longer, i will rock my bun like nobody's business! but i keep my hair hidden away with curls and pinned up in the back. so freakin boring!

enjoying your hair isn't synonymous with it hanging down your back and it blowing in the breeze. i take great pleasure in playing with my twists or braids.

it's more of a PITA when it's loose and catching onto stuff, or hanging in my face.

Yup i like braidouts too.

When i say protective style i mean anything that's hiding your hair or progress...i understand how beneficial PS are that's why i do them and i have retained so much length but i also like to wear my hair out...not necessaraly down/straight.
