I was wondering what you ladies wore to the beach/pool?
regular swimwear? coverups? shorts? special modest swimwear?

I don't go to the beach/pool much and partially because the last few years i've been thinking that bathing suits and underwear are the exact same thing. And I'd certainly never walk around in my bra and panties. So I'm not sure what to wear. Cute and modest swimsuits are very rarely cute imo. Coverups can be really nice but eventually your coverup comes off when you get in the water. I was thinking of just getting a black tee and wearing that and boardshorts. But this doesn't seem very feminine. Ugh, I wish i had a private pool. I love cute swimsuits but I just stare at them longingly.

Also, the thought of people seeing my body bothers me. Like, what right do they have to look and for free. I only want it to be seen by who i choose :look: Partially modesty and i think some vanity too.

These are some coverups I like

It is a challenge:yep:. I wear swim wear that look more like the kind athletes wear. I pair them with boy leg shorts, board shorts, or cute swim skirts etc. I pick bright colors and patterns cute hats, sunglasses, etc to keep it fun but w/o putting my body on display.
This is similar to what I wear when I'm swimming, at the beach, water theme parks, etc.

Girl I be looking crazy to people when I go swimming. I wear capri's and a shirt :look:...I dont feel comfortable showing my thighs. I dont wear my thighs out on a regular day and Im not gone wear them out to the beach/pool.

I rarely go swimming for this reason, because it can be challenging to find something modest to wear.

But these are some that I found, that I would like to invest in:

Now it looks like a dress, but the material is the swimwear material, but it has the swim bottoms underneath it

This is just a few I like....They may look granny, but I like them :look:. We shouldnt be going to the beach to be sexy and appealing anyway.....Im just saying :look:

Being a 'germophobe' I do not like public pools neither the beach. However in Florida and with my baby grands, it's unavoidable for they are natural born 'swimmers' and they cannot go to the pools or to the beach alone.

I have several sundresses like this one you posted and I really like them.

However I'd wear this also over a one piece suit.

I like those. I was going to mention swim dresses. I am not keen on traditional bathing suits, even one.pieces. I'd just as soon put on a swim dress and hang out next to the pool/beach. If it's all women, though, then whatever.

These two are a definite...

Especially this one. It's loose, it's modest and it's more like a little dress.

I have several 'poncho' style cover ups a little longer than this.

I also have several Pareos (Sarongs) that I tie around me like a wrap skirt or a wrap type dress.

Depending on the length of the fabric, the length is usually below my knees or at my ankles. Whatever covers my derrierre and at least below mid-thigh (close to my knees) so that I can sit down and get up modestly, is what I'll wear.

Bathing suits are one piece or two piece tank top and shorts [no cheekies] peeping out from under my suit bottoms. :nono:

I hope this isn't TMI, but good grooming of the bikini area is a must. No forest rangers showing. :blush3:

Speedo's are great slimmers for the body. :yep:

The skirt is cute... it hides the 'cheek' area. :yep:

These are cute, not granny at all. I like the pink and white at the bottom and the turquoise blue capris in the middle picture. :yep:

Re: Great cover ups!

Thanks for the links,.they're too cute (esp the orange) and I'd wear these! They're modest and functional.. How timely, 'cause I sure do need to shop for some swimwear soon. Haven't seen a beach or pool in what seems like years...

ITA ..no need to look "sexy". There are too many layers of impropriety and nuances that are overlooked when it comes to swimwear and water. :look:

I think modest and the beach is rather oxymoronic (is that a word?). Everyone is wearing the same thing, no biggie. In this case you actually have to work hard to be provocative. Blame it on me being in Cali, IDK...

I don't go out of my way to be extra covered up. No triangle bikini or anything like that. I make sure that the bottom is full cut and that there is adequate support and coverage on top. I use a t-shirt or cover-up when walking on the beach. Usually it is a one piece or a two piece (not a bikini). When others are wearing dental floss I think a one piece is modest.

These are really nice Alicialynn86 .... :thankyou: :love3:

How did you find these? I like them. :yep:

This makes it easy to go from the 'Shore' to the Store. My 'babies' get hungry and it's for certain that when they come out of the water they want to eat, which means having to stop somewhere on the way home.

Those concession stands at the beaches are crazy with their prices for food/snacks. :nono: We carry water and snacks but they don't last long. My babies can eat.

These outfits are perfect for Florida. :woot:

I can't post that pic, Prudent1, but those swim skirts are nice! FashionBug still around? lol (telling on myself here)

OP, to get that effect of a Tee and board shorts, perhaps a swim skirt/speedo swimsuit combo would work for you, no?

Fashion Bug is still around, I think. Remember 'Mary Ann's'? Another store similar to Fashion Bug. My sisters and I would get our little babysitting money and buy an outfit at least twice a month... those were the days. There was another store we used to go to and spend our little money....... the name escapes me ?????

Not so sure about the bolded... that only underscores where were are today.

Religion aside, let's look at the timeline of American swimwear and how it's been peeled like an onion... from this (20s):

to this (30s):

to this (40s and 50s):

to this (60s):

to this (70s)

to this (80s, 90s):

to today (2000s): Nothing but thong bikinis....

Women's lib, IMHO, has a lot to do with the shift, but that's another discussion. Yeah, one can be modest on the beach, esp. in this day and age when everybody is wearing the same thing.. a peculiar people will stick out like a sore thumb.

amazing I'm surrounded by water and hardly ever go to the beach and when I do go I look at the water but don't go in lol

Bahamians are weird when it comes to beach attire, they will wear a bathing suit but will cover it up with an oversized t shirt and tights ...

what I would consider appropriate is a 'full' coverage bathing suit similiar to the 40's picture above, everybody on the beach ain't save ya know and some of those who are saved have eye issues..y'all know what I'm talking bout...lol ..seriously ...

Caribbean lady checking in. I like the 40's suites too. The ones under the umbrella.

Actually, OP I was tempted to ask a question like this. Thanks for this thread. I love the beach, hate to come out once I get in, but since my church girl naivity has ended I'm getting scared to strut in a bathing suite.

Let me explain. Went to a Church's Sunday school beach picnic. All the young ladies showing off their finest. Couldn't help but remember my husband proverbally plucking my head out of the sand when he told me about what the guy's used to 'check out' at such picnics when they were younger . So since he wasn't even around that day I decided to keep on my white, cotton, calf length, halter top dress which was sort of see through and barelly revealed my boycut bath suite.

Then it happened, a stray wave broke it's bounds and soaked me where I was sitting. I saw it coming so I turned quickly to move just as it hit and was bowled over by the reaction of some of the young men on the beach :lick:. My thoughts were, "my husband was right and I'm a prude". Got up and found a rock to sit on, far from everyone till I dried off.

Late last year I got over myself and decided to go in the water the next time I went to the beach. Besides, I now always wear boycut bottoms with a full tank top over. Met a guy I knew. No big deal, other ladies were there in more revealing suites. Had a bit of small talk, took off covering, got in the water...That guy has never looked at me the same again and it's been months. Thankfully he has remained respectable but whenever we meet :love4:. A definite change.

Putting that aside, I never cared about such things when I was younger even though I was modest, when I got to the beach I used to feel comfortable in my bath suite. Now I'm thinking I better start wearing t-shirts and tights because other t-shirt & tights wearing Caribbean ladies would laugh at me (and point) if I wear one of the ultra modest bathsuites in the thread (I like the blues). Sorry I strayed off topic :look:, just glad to know I'm not alone.
