I Miss My Hairbrush!

Back before I got all into these hair forums and read several things about how damaging brushing can be, I brushed regularly. I have since thrown out my brush. I miss my brush! I am just not convinced that brushing did anything horrible to my head or hair. I cannot stand having lint and down and crap all up in my hair, which wasn't an issue with brushing, but now is. Can anyone recommend a good natural bristle brush that is reasonably priced?

Ok let me tell you my not so secret. I still use my 100% boar brush, I to finish up a dry wrap at night, smooth down my wild sides when my relaxer is growing out and to smooth my hair down when I am wearing a ponytail. I can't let it go.:lachen:

Thank you for that hairbrush confessional, Neonbright. Anyone else stop brushing and found that it was not so bad to brush after all?

Like Neonbright, I still brush. I don't think I'll ever give it up. I have a very soft bristle flat brush that I stole from my hubby, and I only use it to finish my wraps or smooth my hair into ponytails/buns. It is a very soft brush though, but I have to have something.

Girl, I have a natural bristle large boar brush that I use for wrapping. I use it to brush out roller sets when I want to wrap it and I also use it to wrap my hair at night. Sometimes when I oil and massgae my scalp with Vatika at night for a pre-poo I brush the oil through my hair with the brush.

My hair is thick and it just won't lay down with a seamless comb...:lachen: I think you can do anything as long as it's under the right conditions and in moderation. :yep:

This is the one I have:

But, this one looks good, too and half the price:

I order a lot of stuff from Folica and have had no issues...

I use a boar brush as well... When first joining a few months ago, I thought "what? No brushing?" But I did have to admit that my brush was a lot of my problem. I wore a ponytail almost everyday, but it had to be tight and extremely smooth. Once joining, I learned I was just ripping my hair out everyday!! I now use the boar brush as the others posted...surfacing smoothing edges, wraps and ponytails. I feel you though on the "missing it" part - I had to throw my other one out just to leave it alone - it hard when you're use to a certain look.

Me too...I realized that it never caused me damage in the first place b/c I've always used it wisely.

Go buy a hair brush! Never ever throw anything out based on a hair forum just because other people said it was bad. Maybe put whatever it is to the side or continue to use it and re-elevaluate the amount of harm it is truly causing you.

P.S. I love my brush.... I have a denman and a boar bristle and I use them both almost everyday and my hair is growing and retaining length.

I got rid of mine over 2 years ago. I can tell you my hair grew in much thicker when I got rid of it. I just started missing it recently so I've been using the Denman when I detangle (every couple weeks).

I've been brushless (sp) for a while now but about a month ago I bought a boar bristle brush and it felt so good on my scalp...ahhhh.

Even though I have the brush, I still limit my use to brushing down my edges every now and then.

Growth retention really took off for me when I stopped brushing to detangle. Now I only smooth my hairline with a BBB when wearing my hair up.

I have a boar bristle brush that I use to smooth my edges when my hair is in a bun. I only use it once a week (on wash day when I put my hair up) and very lightly. It's all about using certain hair products and tools in moderation. We have to see what works best for one's own hair not according to what the general consensus of the board believes, IMO. :)

I have been trying to stay away from Folica, LOL! Who said impulse-buying is limited to check out lines? I do thank you for the links, am checking them out and won't look at anything else.

Thank you, I do agree. But when I first started reading the forums it seemed to make sense. Still does, but my hair seems to be a magnet for stuff and only brushing gets it all out between washes. To brush or not to brush..gonna do it but in moderation as needed. Thank you all for the replies!

YIKES!! Now that sounds problematic!

I love brushing my scalp.

The plastic fake Denman is my best friend, I use it to do my wraps at night after I have combed my hair. I finish off my wrap with a small soft bristle brush before tying it down. But when I really want my scalp to sing, I part my hair in small(ish) sections and brush thoroughly, section by section, with my boar bristle brush. I don't think I have suffered any damage.

What is a problem is brushing hair while it is wet. I used to do this all the time when I was natural, I've been clipping for the past year to get rid of the damage I did.

Hmmm I guess I'm in the minority, I haven't used a brush since I did my first BC back in November. Before I stopped, I used to use some eco-styler gel on my edges and a $1 Goody brush and brush it back and up when I do a ponytail to get my hair to lie smooth. But since my BC+texturizer, I haven't had a need to use a brush to smooth edges or anything. And with this NG coming in, I still don't. All I do is use my fingers + a lil Fantasia IC gel (blue one) and just start smoothing. Not sure how long this will go well for me, but I get the feeling from looking at a lot of hair fotkis I'm gonna need to get a boar or denman brush one day, but I'm not in any hurry though, for that's one less item from turning me into a product junkie LOL. I'm trying to stay strong now.

I never liked brushing my hair, but my mother LOVES brushing her hair. She wants to grow her hair longer (her hair is very damaged. It's now at about earlobe length and very thin) she's entrusting me to help her regain healthiness again, but she can't get over brushing her hair with those plastic bristle brushes. She's the type of person that has to have "every hair in place" so brushes would help her do that better. Are boar bristles less damaging? And what about Denman brushes? TIA.

You got that right!!!   I do it very lightly though.

I use a brush made for babies to smooth the top of my hair occasionally. I don't think that would be what you are looking for, though, because the brush is too soft to reach through to the scalp. It may or may not remove some lint.

I love my Denman brush. I never use it on dry hair, though.

Same here. I use the denman to detangle my hair. I use my brush to smooth out the edges and give me that polished finished look.

Not every advice from the forum is going to apply to your hair. (example: I won't detangle with just my fingers even if you paid me.) Buy another brush, but just remember not to detangle your wet hair with it.

Shoooot, I'll be DAMNED not to brush my hair!! That one time a year I do straighten my hair, I get that brush out, comb out, and oillllllllllll my hair until the shine will blind you and brush to my heart's content.

I even use the boar brush on my DRY hair, like if I did a banded ponytail, I'll brush the top of my hair. It smooths it down! But I use my denman when I wash, cause those bristles feel damn good on my scalp.
