Interested in coloring my hair after watching some youtube.com videos...and seeing so many ladies here w/gorgeous color.

So, is it best to straighten your hair BEFORE attempting to apply color? Or can color be applied to natural texture?

My hair is 4a.
Natural Color is dark brown almost black.
Looking to lift to a lighter brown/brown (no blonde, yet).
I want to start w/more of an auburn color.

Thanks in advance!

I did mine in its kinky state but it would have been easier if it were straight. I wouldnt straighten it just to color it though. Too much work.

I color my hair in its kinky state. The color takes just fine with it curl. Just section of your hair and apply the color in sections and you should be just fine.

I think applying heat to the hair to straightening it prior to color may cause too much stress for most hair. And the heat protectants you would want to apply to prevent heat damage would probably interfere with the color.

Hi faithVA,
I didn't even think about that, but that's an excellent point--thank YOU! I appreciate your sharing about sectioning the hair, etc.

Girl you are right....thinking about having to straighten first....whew. Tired thinking about it.

No thanks!

Appreciate your input, tru4reele! (what a cute screen name!)

I used to color my hair when it was kinky. In the past, I never straightened it first. I used Feria and Manic Panic throughout the 90s. I normally had to use 2-3 boxes of hair color to saturate my roots thou.

I straighten because of the effects I want. its easier to part and manipulate better for me in that state.
