Default This Coconut oil smells like " Baby Throw-up"

That's the only way I can explain it, sour-like . Has anyone ever experienced this?

It doesn't smell like that in the jar but once I put it on my hair, it smells like that the next day. Iv'e experienced with more than one coconut oil based product Does this mean it's rancid? It may very well be my hair or my body chemistry as i've experienced this on freshly washed hair too but I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

YES I had a jar of coconut oil (extra virgin) and it smelled like coconuts in the jar but when it touched my hair/scalp it was a different story...I don't remember what baby throw up smells like LOL but I'd describe it as just really "off" and pungent. I'm thinking it has to do with the grade? maybe food-grade coconut oil is better, like the ones from Whole Foods?

BTW: the coconut oil worked great even though the smell was weird

I've noticed it before, but i had bought a large jar of coconut oil and after 6 months it started smelling rancid. I only had a couple spoonfuls left so i tossed it. I couldn't stand walking around with that smell in my hair. Now i only buy the small jars and i don't have that problem anymore.

How long have you had the coconut oil?

Coconut oil smells rancid when water is left in either during the extraction process or if you get water in it yourself

shelf life is normally 12-15 months

The one i have now is Spectrum Organic Refined coconut oil . It's about a year old not and I have about 1/3 jar left. I guess i'll but smaller quantities from now on but this happens sometimes even when the products are new and i've tried several different brands .

Embyra is right. Anytime anything foreign gets in your coconut oil (water, your fingers) it can set up an environment where things like bacteria can grow and cause your oil to smell rancid, especially if its organic coconut oil which doesn't have any preservatives in it.

I usually use a specific spoon to scoop out the amount of coconut oil i need to keep the contamination as low as possible, so maybe that will help if you haven't already been doing that

hth!

I used to use that kind on my dd's hair and her hair would smell like sour milk. It maybe the brand because it was fine in the jar.

Jars with wide openings are very susceptible to to stuff getting in them (water or whatever bacteria might be on your fingers)

In warmer climates it's sold in bottles with small openings. You can find those in indian or caribbean stores
