I am allergic to sulfur yet I can successfully use MSM and sublimed sulfur powder in my hair concoctions... My allergy Dr tried to explain that becuase it changes form in different ... somehow I understood when he explained it but I, for the life of me, could not repeat it in a way to make others understand.

I know that when I was in premature labor, I was given magnesium sulfate and went into anaphylaxis shock... almost died, was in the hospital in serious condition for about a week after...

Also, once I had a rash of some sort and was given an ointment with sulfur as a main ingrediant and my body swole up and I looked deformed... was given benadryl and soem steroids and was instantly fine...

anyway, I say all of that to say I was researching something and found some info that maybe helpful to those with sulfur allergies understand why they can still use MSM or sulfur powder

Interesting. . . I also have an allergic reaction to sulfur. I guess this is why I've avoided using a lot of the hair care products that have sulfur in them.

I had no idea that I could possibly use sulfur products in my hair. Maybe I'll give it a shot.

Being told that one is "sulfur allergic" commonly causes confusion, as many people wrongly assume that they will be allergic to multiple sulfur-containing medicines or sulfite preservatives. It is important to know that sulfur is an important building block of life, and that allergic reactions to sulfonamide (sometimes called "sulfur") antibiotics do not increase the likelihood that a person will also be allergic to sulfur powder, sulfite preservatives, or non-antibiotic sulfonamide medicines like some pain killers or diuretics ("water tablets").

The Confusion with Sulfa, Sulfite and Sulfate Allergies

Many people report an allergy to a "sulfur" drug when they go to the doctor. But what does this mean? Usually, a person means that they have experienced an adverse effect from a sulfa-containing antibiotic, such as Bactrim. However, it may mean something much different.
Sulfa medications come in 2 types, antibiotics (such as Bactrim) and non-antibiotics (such as Celebrex). This is usually the medications that people are referring to when they say they have a "sulfur allergy".
Sulfites are preservatives in foods and medications, and not related to sulfa drugs.
Sulfates are "salts" of various medications, such as albuterol sulfate nebulizer medication used to treat asthma. These medications usually do not contain sulfa or sulfites. How do you tell the difference? What about sulfites and sulfates? It turns out that these three terms are quite different, and that a person who has experienced a reaction to one does not necessarily need to avoid the others.

The term 'sulfur allergy' is misleading and
dangerous and should not be used. An allergy
to a sulfonamide antibiotic may imply
cross-reactivity with other sulfonamide
antibiotics, but does not imply cross-reactivity
with non-antibiotic sulfonamides or other
drugs containing sulfhydryl or sulfate groups.
Patients who suffer from an allergic reaction
to the combination of sulfamethoxazole and
trimethoprim should be considered potentially
allergic to trimethoprim and/or sulfamethoxazole
until proven otherwise, and not recorded simply
as 'sulfur allergic'. Allergy to sulfonamides also
does not imply cross-reactivity with sulfite
preservatives, sulfates or elemental sulfur.

Sulfa drugs are used to treat bacterial infections, although they have largely been replaced for this purpose by antibiotics ;
