Military babes support group!
I don't know how many military/prior enlisted ladies we have but I am thinking if we have enough then we can start a support thread. If you are active enlisted or recently discharged then join this thread. Lets get your stats, the standards: hair type, processed or natural, hair goal, hair problems.
Also I'd like to know if you are active or not, have you reached your goal, what things have you done to counter your problems and if you are deployed or home station.
Me I am active duty Air Force currently deployed to the sand box.
My hair type is 4b(afro, kinky) processed at neck length.
My goal: apl-bsl
Hair issues: breakage.
So far my hair is doing better but the dry air, exercise sweat, previous over processing (stupid hair dresser acting like the perm needed to stay in forever) has taked a toll. I am fighting the breakage with moisture but I worry whether pulling my hair back constatly is hurting me?
Ya'll know us military ladies have extra special needs and concerns,

Re: Military babes support group!
Hi, I am a military babe! I am stationed in Okinawa at Kadena.
Right now I am 3b/4a relaxed, just below shoulder length. Working towards APL!
My only issues here are the humidity and the fact that I work out everyday. I have given up on wearing any curls in my hair. I mostly wear ponytails or cute updos.. Only on super special occasions will I use heat on my hair, and so far thats only been two times!
I have just discovered Dom products, castor oil and air drying. My hair is so healthy and strong now! I just to deal with a lot of breakage but not anymore.Last edited by natural_one; 10-18-2007 at 07:51 AM.
Let your high expectations push you forward, but don't let them create disappointments that hold you back. It's great when you expect the best. But it's important to keep in mind that you won't get all the way there immediately, on the first attempt. -Ralph Marston

Re: Military babes support group!
Hi am a military babe. I am active duty Air Force stationed in Biloxi, MS.
I am currently 100% natural. I am just now barely able to put my hair in a pony tail
so I am happy. My hair coal is to reach shoulder length unstretched. Right now my hair seems fine, I just have to get my ends trimmed.

I'm militay. I am stationed at Ft. Gordon, Ga. 4a,b hair; shoulder lenth, relaxed. Ponytails takes a toll on my hair. Since may, I have been wearing a half wig, and now I am currently have braids. So, it's doing better. I don't do pt regularly, so the excessive sweat is not a problem, but back when I was doing it everyday. It took a toll on my hair.

Re: Military babes support group!
I am prior service, so I feel you on the ponytails. It seemed like I could never stay past shoulder-length for very long because I would have damage from the ponytails and end up cutting it off. I went natural and I even started my locks while I was in, and I caught hell for it.
I am 4a natural and my issues are dry scalp and hair. My goal length is waist-length.

Re: Military babes support group!
Hi I am prior service (Army), but I'm currently contracting in Iraq. The heat here is something serious on my hair. I am 100% natural. I'm in braids right now. My goal is to grow heathly long strands of hair. I'm just getting into the idea of taking care of my hair. I wished I had knew about this Site when I was relaxed, maybe I wouldv'e had a head a good long healthy hair. But oh well, starting over now and learning and understanding my hair. Right now I have about 3 inches of hair. I hope for long hair one day. When I was relaxed I had a pretty good length, but the longer it grew, the thinner it got, so eventually I just decided to cut it short and then eventually went big chopped.

Re: Military babes support group!
hey! I'm active duty Air Force stationed at Yokota, Japan
hair type: 4a/3c, texlaxed
current length: bra strap
goal:waist length-hip length
Hair issues: constant shedding, retaining length, finding a good moisturizing & detangling shampoo, moisture
i made a homemade garlic infused oil to help with shedding. i've only used it once so i can't say if it works. i'm starting to do co-washes & deep conditioning 2-3x/week instead of 1 to help with moisture. it seems to be helping. i'm only using shampoo 1-2x/month diluted w/water. i've used Elucence, Jason's, Blended Beauty poos, but i'm thinking about using shikakai powder to wash my hair because they don't detangle my hair at all & even when diluted with water, my hair isn't soft.4a/3c Natural again after 19 month transition

Re: Military babes support group!
I am active duty Air Force...stationed at Grand Forks AFB, ND. I just got back from Iraq a few months ago. I am in the middle of transitioning from relaxed to natural. While I was deployed, I used heat maybe two times. I wore my hair in twists and braids. My hair loved it. I washed it every two days (CoWashes). Living in ND, I really don't have any other options except to do my hair on my own. I could travel an hour to Fargo, but since I am transitioning, it's not necessary. Oh, I've been transitioning for almost 1 1/2 yrs....best decision I ever made.

Re: Military babes support group!
Happy holidays! I'm also a MB. I'm active in the Navy stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. The condition of my hair has improved tremendously from July 07 until now just by:
- Constantly educating myself about proper hair care. Coming to this site regularly.
- Not self relaxing but going to the salon for chemical services. I used to use Dudley's Mild and that relaxer was a bit too strong for me. Now < I use Design Essentials. Works like a charm.
- Minimizing heat, combing, brushing.
- Using only quality hair products (i.e. Desing Essentials line, Dominican Conditioners, no snag combs and brushes).
- Reading Macherie's website. She's an absolute doll!
- Complimenting other women w/beautiful healthy hair and asking questions.
Then I finally had enough. Went to the salon and chopped off all damage hair above earlobe and now my hair is mid-neck length but it's much healthier than it was before. Still have a ways to go, but I'm determined to stay on track until I reach my ultimate hair goal which is mid back.
I'm under navy regs so as long as my hair is neat and doesn't fall beneath my collar, I'm good. The weather here in Eastern NC is unpredictable, one minute it's extremely cold, the next minute it's hot. I simply adjust to the weather that day and keep my hair conditioned and moisturized.

Re: Military babes support group!
Wow, I've been on LHCF since last year and I just now found this thread!
I'm 4a/b, relaxed - shooting for strong, healthy and Mid-back. My hair problem is breakage and trying to find a protective style that looks professional and doesn't snap off my hair like this phony-pony thing does.
I'm active Army on Lackland AFB, hoping to hit shoulder length by September and so far jojoba oil has really helped me counter a lot of breakage.
Now if I can just get that beret to quit yankin my hair out!
The down side of applying protective oils to the hair in hot locations is when you wear your beret over the oils, it gets soaked up into the headband. Took me forever to figure out why I had a perfect line of acne running strait accross my forehead all the time.

Re: Military babes support group!
Hey ladies.
I'm prior service Air Force now serving with the National Guard. Trying to do the ROTC thing these days. I just hit 8 yrs in April and I figure I'll ride the full 20 out. Not sure if I wanna go active again but I don't want to wait until 60 to get my retirement.
HAIR STATS!
Hair Type: 3c/4a; Relaxed; SL
Hair Problem: Used to have problems with breakage and dryness but that came about because I heat-styled constantly.
Right now I'm fine. Cowashing fixed my moisture deficiency problems. I don't break anymore..I just have normal shedding.
Goal: Right now I'm trying to make sure that my hair strong and healthy
and split-end free. Just did a henna treatment and I love the results.
So...after this I'm going for length: BSL
>>sigh<<
Just got out of WTC (warrior Transition Course). I was given short notice and couldn't get micros. I don't know how the hell my hair made it through. But I kept it wrapped and my hair sustained minimal damage.
Other than that I'm chillin and going to school.
PS: I HATE the berets!!!! (no offense)
I was told the Army always wore berets..? Whatver---someone PLEASE bring back the patrol caps!
I can't wear my hair the way I want to with this dayum beret...
All day long I'm 'petting' the beret! Petting my beret-covered head like a small animal...Last edited by Pheonixx; 05-03-2008 at 01:02 PM.

Re: Military babes support group!
I'm active duty Air Force stationed in okinawa, japan Kadena AB. I'm relaxed, finally SL and just started my healthy hair journey mid september. I haven't had too many issues since I've started my journey, but the breakage used to be TERRIBLE and I had dryness issues. Right now everything seems to be going well so hopefully I can keep it going. My goal is BSL.

Bumpity
Blacks, on avg spend <10% of their descretionary income in the community! We spend +$2.75 billion on hair care items with companys that don't "reflect" us. Here's a fix: find & patronize Black owned BSS. What's yours?
