Feeling discouraged. Am I the only one with fine/thin hair?

It is so easy to say to yourself that you should be happy with what God gave you but sometimes I ask myself why couldn't I have been given thicker hair! My hair is natural and very very fine; the strands are fine and snap easily and I have thin hair overall. Not to mention my problem sides that just don't seem to grow. I just do not know what to do to make the most of my hair so I usually just keep it covered i.e in extentions.
My hair is so important to me (and I guess most of you ladies out there too) and that's why it affects me so much that I have thin hair.

Is there anybody else who feels like this and what do you do to your hair?

Do not feel bad, my hair was thick, thick thick and after having my daugher 5 years ago, I got deadly sick. My husband was deployed and we were in Hawaii, so my doctor sent me home to see a speacialist, well I am alive and well today but with very thin, thin hair. I just adapted, my mom has thin hair and my dad has thick hair. So I went from dads hair to moms, oh well. But use Marc Daniels "Big Hair" I get from Sallys, this helps alot, you should try it... And I use Hollywood Beauty Castaoil and Cantu Leave In, that seems to help some how, without the products.... Not so good...

I'm the same way. I have very fine thin hair. I'm in the process of trying to get it thicker. I don't know if there is a way to do it or not, but I'm on a mission! I take my vitamins and come here for advice. So hopefully I will see some dramatic results within the next few months. Don't stress over it. We all have different types of hair. Just use what you got and make it work to your advantage.

I have thin hair as well. April will make 6 months since my last relaxer, and I don't feel like my hair is getting any thicker, so I don't know if stretching is the cure.

I tried carrot juice for a while, and I noticed that my new growth came in a little thicker, but I drank it so much that I can't stand the sight of it now. I've heard lots of ladies say castor oil is great for thickness, so I do plan to try that the next time I wash.

You are not alone. I have very very very fine/thin hair (and thinning sides). I am transitioning and it is very frustrating but I know if I get a relaxer my hair will just get thinner.

Sorry I dont have advice for you.:(

I have fine hair and thin sides. I try not to manipulate it. I "finger comb" my hair and only comb it on wash days.

I don't really consider my hair thin/fine like my mom and granny, but my temples are naturally thin, and my strands are thin/medium (with lots of them packed together). I have noticed that a couple of things seems to be thickening my strands: topical sulfur, castor oil. People say biotin thickens strands. Amla oil seems to make them thicker as well.

I also think products shouldn't be too heavy to way down the strands, yet the hair needs to stay moisturized to prevent breaking and of course, low manipulation. I would imagine that anything that pulls on the hair continuously like extensions, braids, etc. makes the situation even worse.

How about two-strand twists and twist outs? They look good on thin hair if you make the twists small.

How do you determine if you have thin hair or not? What would a person compare it to?

I don't know if I have thin hair or not.

I have very very fine thin hair, and the only thing that has shown to help me, was me going natural, and getting black rinses :ohwell:

My hair is very fine and thin too and I sometimes feel the same way. I found that biotin and saw palmetto supplements helped. Also, washing/conditioner washing daily and letting it air dry or setting on rollers makes it appear fuller and thicker. I've also tried carrot juice but don't really care for the taste so I don't drink it regularly enough to determine if it makes a difference.

I have extremely fine-stranded hair but it's dense which makes it look thick. I think wearing extensions could actually make your fine hair even thinner and drier. You should try wearing your own hair out in braids or two-strand twists. That's what I do. I wear my hair in two-strand twists for the time being... plus I'm on this protective style challenge. When I wore a shrunken twa, my hair would be more prone to breakage. HTH!

I have kind of fine hair as well, but there are lots of strands. My mom has very fine hair which is like cotton candy. She can hold a style usually past two hours.

Fine hair can still grow long if it is healthy. It needs much more care though, because the strands can snap easier than coarse strands. Especially when wet. I lose alot of strands when my hair is wet, it's not funny.

Be encouraged!

Neon- I'm glad you're healthy now.:)

im the same ive always had thin/fine hair...my little sister has really thick hair that im totally jealous of her...lol...but you can still have long and healthy head of hair with fine hair...i know one of my college friends her hair was not as thick either...and kind of fine textured but her hair was so healthy and bouncy..it was about shoulder length..i know one time i went out and tried to copy the hairstyle that she had got hoping that mine would be the same...the hairstyle was microbraids in the front around the edges and back and the stylist would use sewin hair to sewin the middle...and then the braids would have to cover the wefts..but i found out the hard way that that only works for people that have thick hair and its easy for them to cover the wefts because they have more microbraids...mine were okay but just didnt look as good as my college friends did because her hair was a little more thicker....once you learn how to care for it and get a handle on what products work and what works for u then u will see the difference...

ultra hair thick shakes, or loads of Pantothenic Acid (b5) and biotin, and castor oil or black castor oil has been thickening up my hair quite nicely

In answer to your thread question....

NO girl...you are NOT the only one! I struggle with my naturally FINE type 4a/4b hair all the time. I hate it some days! It looks fly away sometimes, and it gets tangled and breaks very easily, and I just don't like feeling like my hair is "anorexic"! And to make matters worse, I'm RELAXED! Girl, if you think your hair is fine when it's natural, imagine how I must feel with relaxed fine hair! I always feel so "inadequate" even if my hair looks freshly done because my hair is never thick like some girls hair that I see. I always envy the girls who look like they have healthy THICK hair you know?

But I can tell you that my hair has definitely thickened up since I seriously started my hair regimen. :yep:

Some things that helped me:

-Switching to a MILD (instead of regular) strength relaxer
-Minimizing my use of heat
-CO washes--thank goodness for these! :D
-Stretching my relaxer touch ups and waiting more time in between my touchups :yep:
-Using products that work with MY hair--detangling shampoos and conditioners, protein strength reconstructers, biotin shampoos, etc.
-Taking my hair and multivitamins--biotin, msm, gnc hair skin and nails....etc

The aforementioned things have truly helped my hair a lot. :)

Don't worry...our hair will thicken up the healthier it gets. We may not EVER have thick THICK hair (and I just have to accept that), but we can at least make the most of our fine stranded hair. ;)

My hair was normally very fine and thin, Then I started seeing these big fat strands of hair all over my head.

I have a thread on here that shows my normal hair and whats been coming in (its odd to say the least.)

I honestly don't know if its the care or the MSM or both, but something finally clicked somewhere.

So don't totally write it off, it could be that you need to tweak something (maybe diet, maybe care, or even both) Sometimes it just takes time. I didn't notice anything for a couple of years and had to remind myself to be patient (though thats really hard to do)

hang in there! :rosebud:

I've got terribly thin hair too. I just came back from the bathroom, and boy does my hair look anorexic :( I'm also on the castor oil bandwagon, as well as biotin and mtg- but I still feel like I havent gained any significant thickness...

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.....

Just letting you know you're not alone. My sides are thinner than the rest of my hair (from poor neglect, too tight ponytails, and 'swoops'). I wish they were thicker, but I work with what I got. I find that poos marketed "moisturizing" are good because they attract water to the hair strands making them looking thicker (as with 'volume' poos)

PS: Dove Volume line is a good option too

You are definitely not the only one, as you've seen from all of the posts. I'm constantly trying to figure out what to do with mine! I've braided it for the time being with the hopes of retaining length and growing out some short sections in my hair (not sure what happened there). I'm not really able to offer help, but at least I can tell you that you're not alone!

I have fine hair that becomes thin quickly with damage. Sometimes it does seem that the only type of hair that's appreciated is course thick hair. But I love my bouncy, fine hair that my mother and grandmother gave me. However, it takes a lot of tlc to keep it looking decent. But even when my hair is not at its thickest, there are things I do to fake fuller hair. I avoid greasy products, bone straight styles, and too much heat. Airdrying, using mousse and/or setting lotion, keeping my hair clean, and rollersetting help me to maximize what God gave me. Temporary color also helps to make hair appear much fuller. My favorite is colourshines by cellophanes. I call it a weave in a bottle.

Nope you're not the only one. I have fine strands too and my hair's thickness is about medium...definitely NOT Sherry love thick...lol. I have learned to accept it's limitations and maximize what I can. I agree with CQ about these:
- Switching to a MILD (instead of regular) strength relaxer
- Minimizing my use of heat
-CO washes
-Stretching my relaxer touch ups and waiting more time in between my touchups. I went from 9-13 weeks to 16 weeks.
-Using products that work with MY hair--detangling shampoos and conditioners, protein strength reconstructers, etc.

And I'll add I noticed that Brewer's Yeast made my hair stronger and the strands a bit thicker and coarser...I noticed it was more resistant to being relaxed..lol.

ETA: I think growing out my natural layers will help it look thicker as well. Maybe try that if you have layers.

Thing is when you get it blowdried and pressed (when natural) it may still look as thin...it may just be the nature of the hair. Only way maybe to leave in some kink (natural or relaxed)

My hair is thin, baby-fine, breaks easily. It began to grow when I began to leave it alone--I condition it and wear a phony pony most days, no relaxer, blow dry/flat iron/curl one day per week. The less I do to my thin hair, the better.

I have fine strands...and ive noticed that using MTG and just taking care of my hair in general has helped ALOT. When I was younger, I had thick hair and it seems as though after all that trauma ive put my hair through....its finally thickening up.

I have fine hair that is relaxed and I agree with the poster who said Sebastian Colourshines make your hair appear thicker, it really is like she said a "weave in a bottle". I apply a colourshine every 7-8 weeks and when I first put it in my hair appears at least 20% thicker. That combined with a rollerset will really boost your volume. I also drink carrot juice daily and take biotin and a multi vitamin daily.

I have really fine hair too although it's of average thickness, so sometimes it doesn't look like I have a lot of hair. To keep the strands from breaking, I use a light protein conditioner followed by a moisturizing one every week and no longer brush. I don't relax bone straight, blow dry, or flat iron and having lots of new growth means that my hair doesn't look too flat. Roller sets also give the appearance of fullness and volume.

My hair is pretty fine as well. I really don't know how to make my strands thicker but I am definitely trying to grow out my layers. I think layers make fine/thin hair look even thinner.

I had really thick, coarse hair as a kid. My hair thinned out considerably, I mean you could see my scalp after 15+ years of having a relaxer, and some mishaps by the hands of stylists. It was very very fine for about 5 years. Last October, I decided to let my relaxer grow out and become natural again, and I'm regaining my thickness. Other things that's seem to be help are putting eo's in all my conditioners, hot oil treatments with castor/evoo, and cw several times a week. Whenever I get braids, even cornrows w/extensions, it seem to look a little thin in the crown area after I take them out, but it starts thickening back up after a few weeks, so I've stopped braids for now. It seems to hinder my progress.
