What to Wear for a Mehndi?
So....I'm really eager to go to my friends mehndi in October (long way away, I know). I asked if I can wear a sari and she said yes, which is good because I was going to anyway. I haven't worn one since high school and back then I just got hand-me-downs from friends.
I figure if I want to get one from India or custom made, there's no harm in looking early. The only store I know on the ground is a no go.
Has anyone purchased a sari with matching skirt and crop top online?

Re: What to Wear for a Mehndi?
Saris are not custom made, so I guess you mean the blouse. I have never bought a blouse online, but I have had custom made shalwars. The fit was amazing, but the company has gone commercial and doesn't make ethnic wear anymore. They sold their souls.
If you're near Jersey, I know an old lady down an alley
Otherwise, I wouldn't worry. Order online with the correct measurements from AN INDIAN and you'll be fine. I have never seen or heard of an Indian ruining gold or silk.
Otherwise, you can get a ready-made sari and petticoat from the same place so it will match. How much are you spending on the sari? A $200 Handloom Silk? You cannout wear ready-made, Miss Thing. $50 Sari goes fine with ready-made pieces. My quality saris came from Naidu Hall in India. The others came from Jersey City.
You can also wrap your sari into harem pants Kaccha Style instead of a dress and wear a velvet stretch blouse like this.
But let me tell you. It's one of the hardest things I've ever done manually.
Here are some rough instructions.
These are the instructions I used on my 1st sari. Can't believe it's still up.
More formally, it should look like this...
Do not do Kaccha/Kashta Style to an expensive sari. You will either fail or ruin the thread pattern. Get one off the sale rack for $30 and be done.

Re: What to Wear for a Mehndi?
You actually can have a saree pre-pleated, which is what I think you mean by custom made. I did that for my cousin's wedding, plus she made the top. It looks like you pleated it yourself(or had the dresser do it) and saves a lot of time. You have to find someone that knows what they are doing because if it is not done right you look like you are wearing a bed sheet.
My mom purchased a saree from Ustav ( http://www.utsavfashion.com/?gclid=C...FQrf4Aodbi1b0w). It was really pretty and she spent less than $100. I like to see mine in person because I am anal like that. But Utsav was recommended by a several people we know, including the seamstress that pre-pleated our sarees.
Lehengas are also really nice(skirt and top). So you may want to look at those.

Re: What to Wear for a Mehndi?
^Thank you, I'll look into it. I want the skirt and shirt to match the sari, as I stated, but I don't want to spend too much. I have a large chest so only the blouse will need to be tailored specifically.
ETA: I looked at a few Lehengas Cholis yesterday but they didn't come with the Dupatta. This site has them together and matching so I think I found what I want. But maybe I still want the sari because it may be cold, hmm.
Thanks again @ chanjune80

If you want the blouse to match the sari, it costs maybe $40 to make the blouse and a sari that comes with a "blouse piece" is gonna cost maybe $80 at the least. What you can do is buy an 8 or 9 foot sari and have them cut the sari to make the blouse.

Re: What to Wear for a Mehndi?
Check out riafashions.com.
I've never ordered a saree from there, but their tunics are good quality and affordable, so I'd imagine that the sarees are as well.

The sarees are a little too risque for me. The suits are nice but I can't get down with Indian pants. The ankles are always so tight, even though the rest of it fits perfectly. IDK if I want wide leg pants, seems so casual. I'm being so picky, lol.
ETA: Nvm, I see that you get to pick the blouse type separately for the sarees... off to do some browsing.

Bought a sari and my friend told me what style to drape it in. I think I did a good job. This is Gujarati style.
I ended up going with an Indian based vendor: sareez.com. Customer service was great. I purchased on Oct 7th and it was sewn and delivered to my doorstep from Calcutta on Oct 12th. The sari, blouse and petticoat were under $40! Shipping was $15.
Don't look at my chubby tummy and messy bathroom.

ETA: about the fit: The site lets you put in your measurements so the blouse and petticoat are sewn to fit you. You also choose the design of the blouse (sleeve, front, back, length, alladat). I have a large bust, especially in comparison to my waist and that part of the blouse fit perfectly. My arms are huge and I couldn't get the blouse past my elbows. I had to open 2 seams and it fits snug. I can't let it out anymore because it's one continuous seam down the sides and it'll make the whole blouse bigger. I was a little disappointed that it didn't fit out of the box but the site does say it comes with room to let it out.
