Default Are these split ends?

I'm having trouble determining whether my hair split ends or not. Whenever I try to braid or twist my hair, I always have little hairs sticking out. From what I've been reading, this seems to be split ends, but is it normal for it to be all the way up the hair shaft? I havent used heat since December. I have been trimming my ends. I'm trying to grow my hair but constant cutting is becoming a hinderance? Anybody have any any suggestions or advice?

Yes it is normal for split ends to go up the hair shaft. Can you take a picture of maybe 2 strands of hair and post it?

Hey OP! Please post a pic so we can determine if it's breakage, split ends, or just uneven growth (which is normal).

They're not split unless they are thinner than the rest of your hair. Those are most likely strands that are shorter than the rest for whatever reason... Every single strand of hair isn't going to reach the ends of the braids, so they stick out where they stop if you don't braid tight enough.

I those are either new hairs that are grown in from shedding or breakage in the past.
