Ok, first let me say dont get me wrong, I know its not recommended to try to loose weight while your pregnant.
But I just want to find out if anyone has been able to do it, or at least maintain their present weight?
My situation is this...I just had a baby in Feb. I was 130lbs pre pregnancy and 196lbs at delivery...Yes, I gained entirely to much weight! Now I'm down to 150lbs and just found out I am 4 weeks pregnant.
Just a few days before I found out I was pregnant I started a vegetarian diet, so hopefully that will help and I will excercise.

I wasn't able to maintain my weight, because you're going to gain weight no matter what you do. What I did that made it easier to lose weight afterwards was walking (nothing strenuous). With my first child I weighed 100 pre pregnancy and at the time of delivery I weighed 135. I lost like 10 pounds after giving birth. I slowly got back down to my old size, took about 6 months. The reason I gained the "average" weight is because I ate very, very healthy, no ice cream, chips or sodas. Fresh raw veggies and fruit, lean meats, milk, lots of fruit juice, and water. Like I said, I walked daily. I'm pretty sure your doctor will be against you dieting while pregnant. I've heard of ladies being on a diet for health reasons (diabetics), but not to lose weight or maintain their weight...

Congratulations!!!!!
I think that pregnancies are different for every woman. I do not have any children so i cannot speak from personal experience, but I have witnessed my coworker's pregnancies and she seems to lose weight when she gets pregnant (at least at first, this could be linked to morning sickness
and her not wanting to eat..I don't know)
If I were you, i would not worry about my weight..the fact is YOU ARE GOING TO GAIN WEIGHT and that is a great thing!!!! I say that if you have a great diet plan now, then the same diet plan will be great after you give birth..but for now eat healthy much the way Nacai23 did during her pregnancy and in eight months you can go to eating cabbage soup if you want..again Congratulations!
Hi Teenie,
I have been thinking the same thing. I'm not pregnant, but I've been thinking about getting. The only problem is I'm scared to get fat again. I still haven't lost all my weight from being pregnant and it's been over 2 years. My cousin trains herself to only eat what is absolutely necessary (practicaly starves) when she is pregnant. She just had a baby 1 month ago and is already back in her clothes.

Luli,
so how much weight does your cousin gain and does she have average weight babies?
I am definitely going to talk to my doctor to find out what the absolute minimum I can eat is. Then I just have to stick to it.
I wanted to start the Raw Diet but I read something about when you change your diet that drasticlly it sends your body through a detoxification and I would be concerned that it would harm the babe
I know that I will gain some weight, I just want to loose weight early on to kind of offset the gain.
Teenie, she gained 25 the first one and maybe a little less the second. The babies came out fine - my aunts thought that they were a little on the small side3. SHe's petite and so are her daughters. Doctor said that they were both healthy so I don't see that she did any harm. My family loves fat babies so to see a small baby sparked a lot of gossip.http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/nono.gif

There was a article in fit pregnancy mag about this in March or April. You only need an additional 300 calories per day during pregnancy so that's the equivalent of a medium sized banana and a 8oz glass of skim milk. If you stick to a 1500 calorie diet and add the additional 300 calories you and baby should be fine.:yep: I am not a physician but I did read about this in my fit pregnancy mag. Congrats on your new bun in the oven:grin:

During my last OBGYN visit I read an article about weight gain during pregnancy. The article recommended that healthy women (not over or under weight) gain between 25-35 pounds during pregnancy. It also stated that women who did not gain this amount had babies that were born with a number of complications.
It is tempting to want the weight off immediately, but think of this as a long term thing. Keep healthy habits before during and after and you should be okay

I too was sick of everyone telling me NOT TO DIET while i was pregnant. OK..so what ..gain a billion pounds. I listened to those people and gained 60 pounds with my 1st. With my second baby ..I followed a strict DIET whenever the baby didn't object!! I was able to keep the weight gain to a minimum without developing gestaional diabetes. There was a period during my 2nd trimester where i didn't gain any weight for 2 months. I was pretty happy and since I started out overweight my doctor not worried one bit. I do know of a few vegans that did the very thing you are trying to do and their babies are perfect. One lady lost 20 pounds while pregnant ( she went from 170 to 150) had her baby and lost 20 more pounds during the delivery. she left the hospital around 130 or so and you couldn't even tell she had been pregnant.. It was truly amazing. She now has trouble keeping weight on because she is breastfeeding and her boy is sucking her dry. she has to supplement him with soy formula now. So.. good luck with your vegetarian diet. Keep it up and you will have a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby. Try not to let people scare you into thinking you will be unhealthy eating vegetarian as a pregnant woman. It's the best diet in my opinion. God Bless you and congrats.

Dieting is not recommended, since it releases toxins in your body that can be harmful to the baby.
The Swedish recommendations are: 80 extra calories a day for the first trimester, 300 calories extra for the second trimester and 500 calories for the third trimester.

dogmd I love your thread.
I'm 90% (playing with 100%) raw vegan. I'm still losing weight and probably will be for the next year. I'm not going to force myself to gain weight if my body is still naturally releasing it. I started this diet 8 months ago and I'm in it for life whether I'm pregnant or not. :yep:
No matter how much a woman weighs when she becomes pregnant (even if she was over 300 lbs.) it is NEVER recommended that a pregnant woman try to lose weight. Those who are very overweight or obese may only need to gain 15 pounds, but weight loss is not recommended.
Congrats on the baby, but be safe also.
