Ladies, I'm needing all yr expertise. For years, I'd exercise w. no diet changes. I'd do OK for awhile, then fall off the wagon. This dr. visit scared me. My healthy cholesteral level is low and I have been orded by my dr. to exercise. It is a bit depressing, but it is neccesary. I am obese w. no idea on how to change my eating habits. Right now, I don't know what is good food or bad. I have been banned from fried food and soda. I'm sorry if this is a long post, but it is a bitter pill for me to swallow. I had to finally admit to myself that I need to lose weight w diet and exercise. I feel fat and ugly.:ohwell: My hubby is taking me to get my hair done tomorrow to get rid of the "ugly" part. The rest is up to me. Can u ladies give me an idea at how to start eating healthy? I want to do this in a way that won't kill my wallet. Thanks in advance. I plan on alternating my vids each month. I'm going to use Turbo Jam this month to get me started. This exercise is the easlest of all the tapes I have. I need to build up my muscle and endurance level. Please give me any advice u think that could help me in my journey.

Hi sweetie!! Just come on the Turbo Jam board ... we'll motivate you to get healthy again. I feel like the most important thing is that you don't try to do too much at first. Cutting out the sodas and fried foods will produce excellent results; just keep on doing that and Jammin and posting on the TJ board and you will feel fit and healthy before you know it!!!

Hi:)

There are so many challenges going on in this forum, just browse around.

I heard one specialist on the radio say that black women can lose weight immediately by cutting back on dairy, fried foods, and sugar (this was a black radio station, btw).

Try to eat smaller portions, some of my friends who are larger eat much larger portions than I have ever eaten like they will eat a foot long instead of a six inch sub. That can make a world of difference.

Eats tons of fiber (fruits and veggies).

And try to buy organic as much as possible, check out the "is food in the us tained" thread in the off topic forum.

HTH:)

Grilled foods are yummy and you know you're getting Chicken as against chicken and breading, oil / sludge / lard, and a ton of salt. They also make really yummy tasting diet sodas.

I know the reality check has made you feel like you need to go cold turkey, but think about it as trying a whole bunch of new things out there. There's all kinds of yummy fruits and veggies, you can make smoothies or juice, and personally, while I still order fast foods, grilled instead of crispy can really make a difference in the long run.

Oh, and if you're going to eat a high calorie meal, make sure it's truly something you like that's worth it :look: I find that truly planned occasional indulgence and satisfaction is motivation & even a reward to stay on track whereas a meaningless unsatisfying binge almost always will have me feeling like crap.

I hate exercising too but even when I dont feel like it I get my 30 minutes in. Its better than doing nothing plus I heard you can still lose weight but getting the heart rate up for 30 minutes a day at least 3- 4 times a week.

Welcome to the healthy eating side!!

Simple answer: Processed foods are BAD food, unprocessed foods are GOOD food. Processed foods are man-made. Unprocessed foods are nature-made.

Processed foods usually come in a box or can, have a very long ingredient list and have a very long shell life. Get into the habit of reading the ingredient list of everything you buy. If one of the top 3 ingredients is sugar, salt, fructose or corn syrup, put it back!! If most of the ingredients have chemical names that require you take a chemistry class to understand, put it back!!!

Read the sugar and salt ratio of any canned or boxed food. It's unbelievable how a tiny can of soup can have as much as 900 mg of salt!!

Unprocessed foods are vegetables and fruits, complex carbs like brown rice, whole grain pasta, whole grains breads, beans and legumes, non-soda juice, meat, fish, eggs (egg whites in your case). Even if you buy them from a box or a can, they should not have tons of sugar, salt, or other additives. Buy organic whenever possible. Instead of frying your food, bake, steam, or sautee. Olive oil is great for sauteeing.

Of course, none of us can eat good healthy food all the time. So my advice to you is: don't try to change everything at once. Aim for a 50/50 ratio of good food to bad food. Once you're comfortable at that ratio, then move to 60/40, then 70/30, and hopefully 80/20 ratio of good food to bad food. Don't get too crazy about the ratios. The important thing is that you eat more good food than bad food. You can do it!!

I agree, as well as reducing or eliminating meat altogether. The steroids they put in meat to encourage it to grow also gets into our system and makes it much more difficult to lose weight. She could do a cleanse of some type to jump start her lifestyle change, which will make it easier to stick with her new program by ridding the body of toxins first. A diet high in raw or lightly cooked veggies, fruit, raw nuts, whole grains, and water will make the weight come right off, as well as taking supplements to reduce cravings and to give the body any missing vitamins and minerals it needs. Also, try to explore the emotional side of it. Sometimes, we're "feeding" an emotion rather than hunger. Try to reduce stress, and at times when you feel like eating something you shouldn't, ask yourself if you're really hungry, or are you avoiding facing a problem or issue. You can learn a lot about yourself when going about a lifestyle change.

Thanks for all yr replies!:D I am currently doing a more water challenge and the turbo jam challenge. I started friday. TJ is perfect because it isn't super hard, but it isn't super easy either. The time factor is just right 20 min on eves I have to go to my meetings, and 40 min when I don't. I'll also throw a 15 min t tapp exercise dvd I got from the t-tapp book. Foodwise I will be baking more and trying to eat less fast food. I'm not giving up my meat all together. Is canned tuna bad? That will be my main lunch choice for awhile.I really don't have a clue.
