View Full Version : Younger looking hands
My hands are starting to show signs of aging. They are not as plump as they use to be and my veins are beginning to buldge. What are you doing to keep your hands youthful?

I would suggest that you show your hands at least half as much love and attention that you probably show your feet.
Do a regular pampered hands treatment where you exfoliate them and then follow up with a good moisturizer and sleep with those moisturizing gloves on once in a while.
Note: Avoid petroleum jelly. As we all know oil does not moisturize it lubricates and what you want is moisture that is going to soak in from the outside in to supplement all of the water and minerals you are getting in your diet that are working from the inside out.

any anti-aging hand or body creams throughout the day & especially at night before bed when your body is resting. Hand massages/hand reflexology is awfully nice to get once in awhile too & they are available.....cheap! You will not believe how relaxing that can be!

I use Mary Kay's Satin Hands weekly, and it does an excellent job of keeping my hands soft & supple.

Just as a daily moisturizer is important to keep your face young and healthy looking, i believe the same is for the whole body including the hands. I keep a bottle of hand lotion at my desk and each time i wash my hands, i am sure to moisturize my hands. And i am sure to apply an SPF to my arms, neck and hands when i am going out and about. I read this a long time ago, i cant remember where though. But it works for me, my hands look good. And i dont bother buying any expensive lotion thats just for hands, or any that has anti-aging properties. Just a regular cheap lotion...the water and moisturizers within is good enough.

This may be a little extreme but just like the hair. Moisture, moisture, moisture. Everytime I leave the restroom from washing my hands I put lotion on them. I never let them get dry. That's the key for me. Also, it helps to exfoliate.
thanks ladies, but what about the buldging veins. I was thinking I should try stuff made for vericous veins.

Sorry, I'm not sure what can be done about that naturally.

Varicose veins are a circulation issue (the valves that normally stop blood from flowing backwards aren't functioning properly, among other things). The hand massage idea is good. You can use Grape Seed Extract or Horse Chestnut Seed (from a good health food store) and give yourself a good hand massage / reflexology with your hand slightly elevated and massaging TOWARD your heart.
Also, typically for anything that involves my blood vessels, circulation, etc. I add a capful of Raw, Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother) to the water I drink each day. It helps to regulate blood flow.
Also, some of the better hand creams have essential oils already built in that help to improve circulation, decrease water retention, etc.

Joyful, you are a wealth of health information. You should start a thread on all the natural remedies that have helped you. What'cha know about cleanse the lymph nodes?

Even the OP was asking about veins in her hands, I definitely recommend the use of sunscreen on the hands. I heard somewhere that hands are a body part we leave exposed the most. For example, who thinks to put sunscreen on the hands, but it will help hands looking youthful and the complexion even without age spots.

I use sunscreen daily and I "exfoliate" by scrubbing my hands once or twice a day with a nail brush.
My hands look like they are 50+!
It's funny because the skin in my face is wrinkle free...

FlowerHair, you might be causing your hands a lot of trauma exfoliating so often. Remember the purpose of exfoliating is to remove the dead layer of cells. So if you exfoliate later the same day, surely the new cells aren't ready to be removed. So you are basically keeping your skin in a constant state of healing itself which can cause it a lot of stress. And that in time shows up as wrinkles.
There's a product called Pretty Feet & Hands (http://www.prettyfeetandhands.com/) that might be gentler than a scrub or brush. You just massage it into your hands and the dead skin rolls off. I don't know if you can get is easily in Sweden. I got it at CVS (pharmacy) in the US.
As for making your hands look less old, Carolyn, one of my face exercise gurus, has a program for hands that won't hurt to try. It is a lot like the massage someone suggested in this thread: Hand Exercises (http://www.carolynsfacialfitness.com/Hand%20exercises.html) (BTW, those are Carolyn's hands you see in the pictures and she was 60 when she took those pics!)
Lastly, I went to school with a girl whose hands and feet were soft and smooth like a baby's (no exaggeration) - just as pink too. Her regimen was to rub Vaseline petroleum jelly between her palms, add some lotion and rub again till she got a creamy mixture, then she'd apply that to her hands and feet. She always slept in socks and gloves. She's the only person I know who had hands that looked like they never did any work. But since we were in boarding school together, I witnessed her work like everyone else, including handwashing all her clothes.

Hi Nonie, She treats her hands like a hand model. I guess I will have to try that. Bath and Body works sells a kit for hands that includes the gloves.

I know I shouldn't scrub them that often
I'm just a germ-afobe. Call me Michael LOL
I'll try the thing with vaseline and gloves. :)
What seems to be working for me so far is whatever I do to my face, I do to my hands. :)
I haven't tried the glove treatment--that sounds interesting.

It needs lots of moisture. Everytime I wash my hands I put on lotion. Even when I dont wash my hands, I still apply lotion. I use Eucerin moisturizing lotion, its an all over body lotion. Its a little pricey versus regular store lotions but its effective. It is super mosturizing, your skin will feel really soft and look young.

No can do. Petroleum jelly/vaseline is the only thing that has ever kept my hands from feeling dry and parched. Hand lotions/creams do nothing my hands. I don't use petroleum jelly on the rest of my body, however, the lotions/creams I use have to be somewhat heavy and oil based to soften my skin. I'm open to suggestions for the my hands, though. I like another poster's idea about mixing the petroleum jelly with lotion. I think I'll try that.
