I am looking into taking boxing classes (fitness and self defense) I was wondering if anyone has taken this class before and if it is worth it. Thanks.

I had taken kickboxing for about 6 months for exercise (not defense) purposes. I think it really does help you to stay in shape, but when you stop, your body goes down hill. You really have to make a commitment with it.

You have to decide what you purpose is for taking it. Is it just cardio fun or is it for defense? Once you scout out a few places, see if they will give a free pass to check out the classes. Go try it out and decide if you like it. Beware of places that won't let you try it out.
I taught full contact for about 2 years and a cardio one for 6mos. I personally prefer full contact.

Well, I took Tae Kwon Do for awhile. It just moves too slow for me. I want something that will keep me in shape, PLUS help me punch a guy OUT(defend myself) if I have too! http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Kickboxing is such a great workout! I take classes at a gym and I plan to take an actual course for school. You really do have to stick with it, but trust me, you'll be glad you did.

I took some Jujitsu for a while but I got bored with the slowness and the teacher was a "woman belong barefoot, pregnant and silent" type. Drove me up the wall so I quit.

I have taking two kinds of boxing classes:
The first one was "kickboxing" taught as an aerobics class. I really love this class I think it has contibuted my weight loss significantly. It has realy helped with my stamina as well.
The second class I took was a combination of cardio kickboxing and reall drills, where you put on gloves and punch the punching bags or spar with partners. This class was really cool as well. But it was so expensive and the instructor was ruthless. So i stopped after only a fwe classes.
Carrie as right about evaluating the classes. Most places let you sit in on 1 or 2 classes before you pay your money.

I take a kickboxing class at my gym and it's wonderful. Our instructor is a little bitty woman but she barks at us like a drill sergeant. LOL She likes us to keep an "angry rhythm"

I took hiep tie mon (martial art), kickboxing, and cardio kickboxing. I took martial arts and kickboxing for self-defense and enjoyed both of them. I also enjoy cardio kickboxing.
If I had 2 choose the type of kickboxing, I would choose full-contact, because I get a rush learning to defend myself. Exercising to exercise is cool, but exercising so that I could fend off an attacker just got me excited.
The only reason that I stopped was because I was constantly traveling for my job and now, I have moved from Maryland to Delaware. I am sad because I really enjoyed my teachers. Anyway, I am going to look for a new kickboxing class in Delaware or Phili, so if anyone can recommend a school, let me know.

check out Upper Darby Boxing and kickboxing in Philadelphia. I use to train there. They aren't too far off the Blue Route. The guy who owns it is Andy Carr. Former Marine.
