I am starting to think about getting lasik surgery. I have done a lot of research on it recently, but would like to see if anyone has any first-hand experience with it before setting up my consultation.

I went for a consultation 2 years ago. I wasn't a good choice because I was breastfeeding. I went on a 2nd one Thursday. My sight changed considerible so we're gonna wait a year. My scrpit last year was -4.5/-4.25 this year it's -4.0/-4.0 that's a good jump . So we will wait, if it's more than -3.25 I'm a good candiate. I'm ready I want to be able to see the numbers on the clock

I'm interested in Lasik surgery too. It's very expensive though.

had it two years ago. researched the dr. and the procedure extensively, mostly on-line. i also had *customized lasik* which cost an extra $1,000, total $3000 but it's probably cheaper now.

don't regret it at all. I CAN SEE FIRST THING IN THE A.M.!

got any specific questions?

only side-effect i can say i have from time to time is DRY EYE. maybe two mornings a month i wake up and need eye drops. so i leave them on my nighstand.

Thanks for your responses!

I read on another board that its right around 2000 now, so putting out almost 500 bucks a year on contacts and glasses definitely makes it appealing to me. I am -6.00 in each eye and it really bothers me that I have to be so dependent on my glasses. One morning, i knocked my glasses off of the nightstand and my contacts were in the bathroom, it took me about 15 minutes to find my glasses on the floor because I cant see jack ish!

A co-worker got it done on Friday. She got it done because she loves water sports and here contacts and glasses got in the way a lot. I'll have to see what she says tomorrow at work. I know three other people that got it done, and they enjoy it and say it was worth it. Like someone already mentioned they did say their eyes get dry every once in awhile. They also love the fact that they don't have to reach for their glasses in the morning.

Is this something that last forever?

I saw the process on tv awhile ago. I'm not there yet with it personally, but maybe one day. It seems great.

My doctor said I should still expect to need reading glasses once i hit the 40's b/c bascially everyone does at that age!

i've been researching this as well because I've been thinking about it more & more lately. My eye doc said that roughly if you're 40 & under & u get it done, after 10-12 yrs you will need reading glasses or glasses to see close up. He personally chose not to get it done (which would be free for him) because he's 50 & after a short period of "freedom" from contacts & glasses, he'll have to turn around & wear them again anyway.

Had it done 5 years ago by the dr who did Tiger Woods. TLC in California.. This eye group also does most of the pilots for the major airlines...
Cost 3500.00 for both eyes. only took 20 minutes and i can still see perfectly.. they overcorrected my vision so as i age i hopefully will not need reading glasses. (i am 37)..

This procedure is truly a miracle. I would highly recommend it!

Yes, TLC in Westchester Cty, NY is where my eye doc would refer me for a free consult if I'm interested. I was so glad he was upfront & honest with his professional opinion regarding the pros, cons & his reason for not getting it done personally (although it would be free). I do plan to go to the consult though & I guess then I'd find out how much it would cost.
My gf in Westin, Ct is over 40 & got it done 2 years ago & loves it. She only paid like, $2200 or something like that. She is very thorough, has Dr. friends & does her research before she does ANYTHING!! She can also afford the best regardless, so I know she went to someone very good, although I don't know who yet.

I've been really wanting to do it. I've talked to a few people that have had it done, including my BF. I have worn glasses/contacts for 25 years and my vision gets progressively worse each year so my concern is that I will get to the age where my vision is so bad that they won't be able to make any contacts in that strength!!!!

The other reason I am afraid is b/c I used to have a boss that got it done and it didn't go well at all. For some reason, she was only going to get one eye at a time done. (don't know the reason) She went to get the first eye done and before she could go back to get the other eye done, her retina detached from her cornea or some crazy stuff like that (i may have it wrong), but at any rate, she had to resort back to wearing her glasses and never got the rest of the procedure done.

I can imagine that if I were to get it done, it would truly be the best thing since sliced bread, so you have prompted me to look into it some more now.

I consider myself to be the most nervous and anxiety ridden person ever.... but I took the plunge and got the surgery (especially after wanting it for 12 years and now that it's an all laser surgery -- no blades allowed:lol: )
It was done yesterday and now I can seeeeee!!!! yayyyyy! I'm very pleased with the results. I had my check up this evening. My vision is 20/15 in both eyes.
I do see halos/ radiations around stop lights at night, but that is spose to go away after a short time (1 week to 3 months). I have to keep the antibiotic and steroid drops in my eyes for the first week, but that's a small price to pay for my FREEDOM from glasses and contacts.
Needless to say, I am a pleased customer. Cost me ($3400) for both eyes.

Many ophthalmologists will only do one eye at a time for a good reason. The surgery does not always go well and if it does not, then at least, you have one eye if the other is permanently damaged. Scary reality, but it does happen.

Just be sure to go to a reputable MD and make sure you are aware of the risks. I have personally worked with many ophthalmologists and have an old friend who has done over 50,000 Lasik procedures. Interestingly enough, many ophthalmologists I met would never consider getting the procedure done because of the risk. It would be a career ending moving for them to be blind. I really would love to have the procedure, but I really can't justify the risk personally. If I go blind, my career would be over and I owe too many people money! :)

You should try to find a new doctor.

I had it 6 years ago, my doctor told me at that time he would correct my current vision and "fix " it so as I aged ( I am now 37) my eyes would not need reading glasses. I think he slightly overcorrected one eye and slightly undercorrected the other eye. The overall affect was still pilots vision in one eye and perfect vision in the other (20/15)- Same as Tiger Woods. He told me that if it turned out that I would need reading glasses he would guarantee another corrective procedure for free at that time. He was pretty confident that I would not need this and told me that he has only had to recorrect a few people in the 20 years he has been practicing. I had mine done by the same doctors that Tiger Woods went to.
They also do almost all of the airline pilots in the industry. Pilots literally fly from all over the world to get these doctors to correct thier eyes.

It cost $3500 for both eyes- 6 years ago. Very painless and I recommend it to everyone that needs it. (TLC laser eye center- southern california)

I have been thinking about doing this. It will definitely be something I would want to do after graduation. I have worn glasses since I was 6, and I would really like not to have to wear them anymore.

My husband and I had Lasik last yr and went to TLC in Ontario, CA. I think we paid about $2100 each (we got a discount since we did it at the same time) They told us that our eyesight would get a bit worse at age 40. I was 44 at the time so I figured I'd start off needing reading glasses but so far I don't! Admittedly, I see things much better when they are far away but my close-up vision really isn't that bad. A guy that works with me uses reading glasses and he is in his 50's so maybe it really is only a matter of time before I'll need them. A month after I made my final payment to TLC, I get a flyer in the mail telling me that they now have a surgery that will eliminate the need for reading glasses. Hummm.............
