Is anyone here a make up artist? If so, do you freelance? I've been thinking about going to school for it lately since I'm coming out of school this semester. There's a great school near my house that has a 5 week program. It's definitely been one of my passions since I was young. Freelancing would definitely help me bring in some extra cash. I've been helping my friends out with makeup for photo shoots and what not recently so they don't have to pay an artist. Just curious...

I am. Von Lee and Chesapeake are both really good schools, I know plenty of people who attended both. You can definitely make some money on the side with it, I know I do. Good luck!

if you get a chance check out http://www.deedeekelly.net
She is one of the infamous MAC artists, she worked for Towson and Columbia Nordies.

Yeah, Von Lee is where I was thinking about going. Thanks for the link though. I'll be sure to check her out. One of my friends at school was working at a Mac Counter which made me think about getting the license. I was like wow they pay you that much? Why not get paid to do something you love? It's way better than any of the other mediocre jobs I've had as a broke college student. lol It'll definitely help me get through law/grad school (still undecided which way i'm going). I know I definitely don't want to get a full time job so I can focus more on my studies.

I know that's right! If you become a freelancer for a particular brand, you will make at least 13.00 an hour. That's almost the very least they can pay you. Matter of fact, Every freelancer that I know maked about 16 an hour when they started out. When you freelance for a company, they tell you what days they need you and then you decide if you want to work on those days. It's a great way to go. Just ask each brand's counter manager for the account executive's name and contact information, and you can go from there. Good luck!

I'm also a Make-up Artist and after reading this thread I wanted to find out more about the Von Lee program (always looking to elevate skills) so I called them up. Here's the deal:

40 Hour Exclusive Make-up Course runs about every 4 weeks. Meets 2 nights a week from 6pm - 10pm Tue & Thur. $1400 covers complete course including kit and supplies. One key point, the school does not participate in Federal Aid programs. However, it does accept private educational loans. The one the admissions rep mentioned was run by Sallie Mae. There's a link to that site on Von Lee's site. www.von-lee.com Also, the class meets the requirements to obtain a license to professional apply make-up in the state of Maryland. The fee for the license is $25.

Hope this helps.

Wow, $1400 isn't bad at all. I paid almost that just for one summer class here at Maryland. I'll definitely check them out. Thanks!

Von Lee gets booked up months in advance, so definitely sign up ASAP! Good luck! I never actually went to makeup school, but everyone who goes to Von Lee tells me that you learn more of the education (sanitizing, face shapes, color charts, etc) than technique (smokey eyes, etc). I believe you can also apply to get the MAC student traincase with proper school enrollment. Checkout macpro.com for that. It's an AWESOME starter kit. Having your license makes a big difference in your paycheck, I have been freelancing for MAC since last May and working there has been the best teacher of all!

I am a makeup artist. I have freelanced for Mac and now am permanent. I have never went to any school b/c in my opinion, a school really cant teach you how to do you! But that's my opinion

Working for the company has allowed me to have the best practice of all:hands on
I have attended classes taught by Senior MAC Artist such as Gordon Espinet, Fatima Thomas, Victor C and Melanie and I have learned so much as well as practice practice practice!
