I was on Glucophage (metaformin) about a year and 1/2 ago. I was diagnosed with PCOS. I could not deal with the side effects. It made me extremely nauseous and my stomachaches were terrible. I tried to take it for about 2 months and then I stopped (not good to do). I kept telling my doctor of the side effects and she told me to decrease my dosage but that did not help.

Hi KaiT-
I am not on Glucophage, but I am an insulin-dependent diabetic. I know of this medicine because of it being in my diabetic magazines for insulin-resistance patients. I don't know if I can help, but I do know about working out with low and high blood sugars if that maybe some of your concern. Just thought I would give you someone who may can help. I am not sure of your concern or questions, but if I can help, please let me know.

I have been taking glucophage for years and I have side effects occasionally especially when I eat a lot of bad things. I know a lot of people have very bad side effects like diarrhea, nausea and just cannot take it. I am a diabetic and also have PCOS.

I've been a diabetic for about 3 years. I was on Metformin as well as others I was never able to adjust to the side effects nausea, drowsinesss, headaches and the racing heartbeat, so I stopped taking all medications and decided I would work hard to keep my blood sugar in check. I check my blood sugar several times within the day some days my blood sugar is perfect other days not so good, but I'm working on it and standing on God's word which says "By his stripes I am healed".

I just started taking this medication and it is tearing my stomach up ! How do I manage this ? I am only taking one pill a day at night and I usually have to take an Immodium every other day. Is that bad ? I have to take something, otherwise I can't leave the house ! :perplexed

I didn't take it long enough...never more than 2-4 weeks off an on over the last few years(I'm bad w/ consistency in pills/medication...I know, bad girl). I'm diabetic, but was prescribed metformin b/c of PCOS.
I was told on a PCOS board that you will have horrible diarrhea, gas, bloating, and vomiting if you eat a heavy carb diet, sweets, alcohol, and greasy foods. So, I avoided those foods, and never tried to 'test' the advice I got. As a result, I always lost weight while on met...I don't know if it was b/c of the change in eating, or my sensitivity to insulin changing..and I'd drop weight for a few weeks after going off of it too..
I need to start back up though, if anything, I always felt better on met...even though I never took it for long periods of time/

It sounds like I need to go on a high protein diet. I have a sweet tooth but I try to drink the crystal light sugar free drinks and even that tears my tummy up. I have horrible pain in my tummy all day long unless I take an immodium. I wouldn't dare take a glucophage in the morning; for some reason I don't hurt all day if I take it at night. But this morning I woke up at 5 am with terrible pains and I need to find a way to manage this. Mind you, I'm only taking HALF of my dosage !! I'm supposed to take 2 pills a day ! :nono:

don't just do high protein, make sure you eat carbs, just choose good ones. :yep:
Following like the south beach diet, or eating foods low on the glycemic index was really helpful when I was taking metformin...

I was fine on it in the beginning but then it started making me sick (for PCOS). I had the fogginess, nausea etc. I stopped taking it altogether in Jan. My new doc said she wanted to put me on something new that dealt directly with the pancreas but I'm waiting on an appt. with her. I thought it may have been one of my other meds making me sick and took the metformin night before last and sure enough my head is pounding and I'm having intestinal issues. I'm gonna go back to one pill, they raised it to four and see if that works. What dosage are you guys taking?

I took it twice, the first time it was crazy with the gas and runs so I stopped messing with it after like 2 weeks. Then I started taking it again and everything was fine, I had no side effects and i took it for about two months and then my endocrinologist said I didnt need to take it anymore.

The ladies with blood sugar problems should try a natural alternative.
GTF Chromium
3 companies make it.
Innate Response
or
Megafood
and Jfemme takes 3rd brand that I can't recall.
PM me if you want links on where to order and I'll update this thread.

Yes, please send the links ! How does the GTF Chromium act on your body for insulin resistance and or diabetes ? Do you have to take it forever ?
I've been eating better - basically doing a south beach thing but I still have some stomach issues - not as bad, but they are not gone. And last night I forgot to take my pill. So I have some fogginess going on. Also my fingers felt like they were losing circulation during the day yesterday.

I was put on glucophage/metformin for about a year for my PCOS. doctor said it might help regulate my periods and help with the acne, chin hairs, and weight gain.
I didnt have any ill side effects. well maybe one it looked like I was passing the pill in my stool, but I guess thats not soo bad.
Anyway oim not on it now because i didnt see any results and I was up to 3 to 4 pills a day.
So far nothing has really helped the PCOS, cramping, facial hair.
My aunt is taking bayeta(sp?) my doc wont prescribe it to me

I should also add that my doctor said a low carb diet would be best. she said if I couldnt stick to the strictness of adkins to do south beach.
I found when i eat better, less bad carbs, I feel better. I guess its the same thing with a person with high blood pressure, means no salt, etc.
We need to listen to our bodies, apparently bad carbs and lots of carbs are doing damage and we need to try and stay away from them

I'm currently on it for PCOS and I only feel nauseous when I eat a lot of sweets (my weakness:look:). When I first started taking it two years ago, I was so nauseous and had diarrhea:nono:. It got better over time.

I was on glucophage on and off for some years. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 6 years ago. The side effects were horrible for me. They were pretty consistent with all the one's described on here. I was SCARED to leave my house and nervous about everything that I ate. I did lose weight but I think that's because I was afraid to eat.:perplexed I never stayed on the pills long. The last time the Dr. gave me the extended release(XR) those were so much better. I stopped taking them also because I don't like to take medication for long periods of time. I am still young and worried about the meds affecting my kidneys over a period of time. I figured I would try all that I could to heal myself naturally. I found an eating plan through SELF magazine last year, it included carbs, protein, and fruits/vegetables at every meal.(healthy options of course). I was able to lose weight effectively following the outline. Also Nature Made makes a diabetes health pack that contains green tea, multi vitamin, chromium, selenium, folic acid, and vitamin C. The problem is that women with PCOS crave carbs and once you give in, the cycle starts all over again. Sorry for the long post. I hope this helps.
