My grandmother and my great grandmother suffered from diabetes. My oldest sister was diagnosed a few months ago with diabetes. Her doctor said if they had tested her years ago, they would have known why she was having so many health problems. My sister started gaining weight at a rapid pase about 3 years ago. She had a baby two years ago and after the baby she never lost her stomach. They did all type of tests. They immediately thought it was thyroid problems. Well, she started suffering from migrane headaches. She had a migrane so bad one night they immediately admitted her to the hospital. After thorough testing, she had a tumor growing on her pituitary gland. So, before they decided to do surgery, they did all types of tests and gave her medicine. Her and her three children moved in with my parents so that she would have an adult with her at all times. One night, my sister was unresponsive. She couldn't talk, she couldn't move. So, my parents immediately called 911. So, they kept my sister in the hospital. She had a reaction to the medicine.

They went ahead and performed the surgery to remove the tumor. God is really good. By the time, the got in to remove the tumor. The tumor had had a stroke itself. So basically all the doctor had to do was clean up after the tumor's stroke. It was gone. Well, my sister spent a lot of time in ICU, that is where they finally tested for Diabetes. The sign that they got was, my sister kept wanting juice after juice after juice(sugar). They tested her and They found out that she was diabetic. If the parametics had checked her sugar level the night they had called, she would have known then. Because the reaction was the medicine and diabetes didn't mix. Obviously she has had diabetes for years. That is one of the reason my sister gain so much weight and why she had a lot of problems losing the weight.

I say all this to say that we gain weight and we never know why. We think it's because we eat to much or we don't exercise enough. In some cases that may be true. Perhaps, we need to see a doctor instead of waiting years to learn about something we could have curved years ago.

All my life, I have been skinny. I was 5'11 and my weigh would never go over 130lbs. I know I am 30 now but I have gained over 40lbs in the matter of two years. Being that my family has a history of diabetes, high blood pressure and breast cancer (both my grandmother's (father & mothers's mother)), I am going to start today taking care of myself.

Ladies, if you haven't already, seen a doctor. I hate surprise that will change the rest of my life or shorten my life span. Schedule an appointment today. Even if it's just to learn how you can better take care of yourself.

Bludacious,

Im so glad to hear that your sister came through and that her experience has given you the push to take control over your overall health knowing that you are predisposed for Diabetes and so many other health issues that can be controled and or prevented.

I too had my blood pressure spike back in March of this year. It was so high that it scared me I left work early to go to the doctor. I too have family history of High Blood PRessure, My mom & Dad both have it and my grandmother died of Diabetes. The doctor told me that I needed to loose weight of course and to start excercising on a regular basis. That was the first and last time I will let my blood pressure become an issue. 2 days after my Dr's appt I joined Weight Watchers and started walking 3-4 times a week. I have become more active with my daughter, walks up/down the beach, swimming, anything that involves being outside and active is what I'm about. I'm happy to say my blood pressure is the lowest it has ever been in my entire life and that is the way im going to keep it.

I want to do everything I possibly can to make sure that i'm around for my daughter as long as I can. I want to be around for those important milestones that are apart of life, graduation, college, marriage, birth of my grandchildren etc.

May you and your family have continued healthy living. Thanks for sharing I really appreciate this.

Thanks you Shoediva. Your reply is also an inspiration for me to get my butt to the doctor. I don't have children as of yet but I too would want to be around as long as I can for my children. I haven't had any known problems just of yet but you know how we ignore signs of health problems.

I've read so many thread (including one that I wrote) about weight gain. That is why I posted this thread. Weight gain doesn't always come from eating and not exercising. It can be a sign of a health issue! It is important that we women see a doctor on a regular basis.

Sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and type II diabetes

Sugar and refined carbohydrates are undeniably linked to diabetes (http://www.newstarget.com/007262.html). Researchers around the world have come to the conclusion that the consumption of refined sugar (http://www.newstarget.com/008164.html) is detrimental to the health of people without diabetes and disastrous for those with it. Furthermore, excess sugar (http://www.newstarget.com/011879.html) in the blood can cause the onset of type 2 diabetes. First, however, what exactly is diabetes? According to Bruce Fife ND, "Diabetes is all about sugar -- the sugar in our bodies known as blood sugar or blood glucose. Every cell in our bodies must have a constant source of glucose in order to fuel metabolism. Our cells use glucose to power processes such as growth and repair. When we eat a meal the digestive system converts much of our food into glucose, which is released into the bloodstream. The hormone insulin, which is secreted by the pancreas (http://www.newstarget.com/008164.html) gland, moves glucose from the blood and funnels it into the cells so it can be used as fuel. If the cells are unable to get adequate amounts of glucose, they can literally starve to death. As they do, tissues and organs begin to degenerate. This is what happens in diabetes."

Obesity largely contributes to the inability of cells to obtain sufficient amounts of glucose, according to "Green Tea" author Nadine Taylor. Taylor writes that too many fat cells (http://www.newstarget.com/001050.html) crowd the other cells in the body and make it difficult for insulin to reach its destination. According to Ralph T. Golan, 90 percent of type 2 diabetes sufferers are obese, a result directly linked to poor dietary choices and a sedentary lifestyle (http://www.newstarget.com/003053.html). Michael Castleman, author of "Blended Medicine," says, "Type 2 diabetes is strongly associated with a lack of exercise and a poor diet -- one that's low in fiber and high in sugar, fat and animal products. It develops slowly, usually over several years, and rarely produces dramatic symptoms. For this reason, many people with type 2 diabetes have no idea that they are sick. In fact, the American Diabetes Association estimates that only half of Americans with type 2 diabetes have been diagnosed."

Sugar is so detrimental to human health that many believe it would fail the FDA (http://www.newstarget.com/006874.html) approval process if such a hypothetical attempt were made. Refined white flour (http://www.newstarget.com/008164.html) would fare no better. Both are nutritionally empty substances. According to Dr. Robert C. Atkins, founder of the popular Atkins diet, "Sugar has no nutritional value and is directly harmful to your health. Despite vociferous attempts to defend it, there are studies that clearly show how harmful (and even deadly in the case of diabetics (http://www.newstarget.com/004214.html)) its effects can be." According to Nancy Appleton, PhD, author of "Lick the Sugar Habit," there are 78 metabolic consequences of consuming sugar. Since the Life Extension Foundation (http://www.lef.org/) estimates that the average American consumes more than 150 pounds of sugar per year, those 78 metabolic consequences can be considerable.

I wanted to get tested for diabetes after I originally read this thread because I thought I had some of the symptoms but after consulting with my doctor it just turned out to be allergies.

bludacious-

I am a type 1 diabetic (insulin-dependent). I have to take 4 shots a day. I have had diabetes since 1987. The only other person in my family who had diabetes was my grandfather and he got it later on in his life and only had to take pills for it. He was not overweight, but it was still considered type 2. Type 2 is so big now within our country. I was really sick (tired, thirsty as hell (kept drinking soda-WRONG THING TO DO DUE TO SUGAR), going to the bathroom every 5 minutes (no exaggeration), lost alot of weight (I was already 5"8 and about 110 lbs before this), and very weak. So I go to the doctor for a physical for high school cheerleading and then tell the doctor that I think I have an urinary infection (my mom told me to tell him about it which I wasn't going to because I was embarrassed to tell him I had an uninary infection, but did it anyway). He tested me and found out I was diabetic. Thank goodness I spoke up because he said if I would have waited one more day I would have been dead!!!!! I knew nothing about diabetes, but was hospitalized and learned so much and of course so much more 18 years later (will be 19 years on Dec. 31, 2005). I think that it is important to get yourself tested if you sense anything like the symptoms I described. Better safe then sorry. No one else in my family has the disease now, but the gene is always there. I don't know if I can help you in anyway, but if you want to know of some websites, publications to subscribe to, or places in your (or your sister's) area, then please let me know. I am more then willing to help. Infact, I just got out of ICU 4 weeks ago due to my sugars being over 1,000. Again the dr's said they didn't know how I lived. This is the first time I have had any complication or problems with my diabetes, but it made me feel like the first time I was diagnosed 18 years ago as a senior in HS. I have changed my insulin and working on a new workout program with different foods to eat because as you age, you do need to refine some things. I am here to listen, help with what I can, or whatever it is that you, your sister, or family need. Diabetes changes everyones life in the family because you want the best for that person. Sending my love.

Bludacious, I'm glad to hear your sister is doing well. I wish her well with maintaining this disease.

I just wanted to dispell some of the myth going around about diabetes. 1. Nobody in your family needs to be a diabetic for you to contract this disease I am a diabetic and not one single person in my family is. 2. It is not an obese person disease when I found out I had diabetes I was 125 pounds on a 5'3 frame and in very good shape. 3. All of my meals were healthy when I ate.

The #1 cause for diabete is STRESS in my opinion and I will say to some extend your diet, but not in the way you think "see below" for clarification. I won't say a sendentary lifestyle because diabetes robs you of your strength so any laziness could be contributed to the disease........... they don't tell you that. When the blood sugar is very high you lose energy, when the blood sugar is very low you lose energy, now if you don't have any energy how are you suppose to get up and move around or exercise, exactly your a** gets fat?

I went through a time where everything in my life that could go wrong did. Like most people, if stressed they eat well I'm the exact opposite I don't, can't I could go without food for days, after doing this for several months my body went into starvation and started to feed off of itself I was jacked, my hair started to fall out my energy was extremely low I could nap for hours and still sleep a full 8 and I couldn't remember sh**at times I literally couldn't think. It was malnutrition which brought about the diabetes in me because of the missed meals my body went into a malnurished state, all of you on one meal a day to lose weight stop it you could be doing your body more harm than good and you may not even know it. I believe this is why a lot of overweight people have diabete people altering their diets in order to lose weight causes the body to rebel against itself.

By no means am I saying that everyones situation will be like mine I just wanted to make you aware of things other than what we are commonly taught that can cause diabetes.

Happy health for everyone in '06.:)
