I'm wondering if going 3.5 mph on the treadmill for an 1 hour from Monday-Friday would be sufficient enough to lose weight???

3.5mph is a fast walk and I heard walking was good exercise. I don't wanna overdo myself like I've done in the past (going 4-7 mph) because it makes me give up eventually. Plus, I have bad feet. I've been eating healthier (no dieting) and want to lose weight in a healthy way. I weigh 145lbs now and still wanna weigh 125lbs.

Also, how fast do you go on the treadmill and for how long to lose weight???

Thanks in advance!!!

3.2-3.4mph 10-15% incline, 45min max.

How tall are you? I would think 4.0 would be more of a moderate walk and 4.5 being a power walk. I agree with Carrie that you should do it on an incline so you actually get cardio plus some booty/hamstring work ;)

Doh guess I missed the part about you burning out. Just get moving, and watch what you eat because that's the most important factor in weight loss.

WHen I was running, 4.5 to warm up then 5.0 to 7.0 in intervalse. I f staeady state, 5.0 to 5.5. I never got beyond 5% incline running due to my feet acting up before I could. Walking I would do 4.0 to 4.5 in intervals from 1% incline to 15% incline then back down again(one minute at each %). If steady state using incline, same speed but I would only go as high as 5 to 6%.

I stay at 3.0-3.2. for and hour I usually burn about 350 calories. It works for me. I did step it up to 3.5 for an hour and that was too much for me I felt bad while on the treadmill and aftewards.

I'm 5'5".
I've done an hour at 4.0mph straight before but it felt so unnatural.
In the past, I would alternate between 4mph and 6-7mph.
Right now, 3.5 mph has been working for me. Today when I did this, I got a nice sweat from it, and I rose the incline up to 3.5. As I progress with my walking routine, I will increase incline even further and increase the speed as I get more comfortable.;)

hey pooh, when i was doing my treadmill thing last month i would go for an hour or 75 mins sometimes, between 3.3 and 3.8 approximtely. but i would ramp up the incline. i'd be burning 700 to upper 800s depending on what i did. check out my "on the front street" thread for actual times, speeds, calories burned, etc...

wow! how did your body adjust to all those intervals with speeds and incline?

I gradually made the increases. I did not just jump into this routine. I was already doing high intensity interval training, so I was already use to the intervals and speeds, but I had never done it on a treadmill before. I hope to at least start the walking again soon at least once a week. I just have to be mindful of my feet, so nothing too fast. I hope to pick up my running again in the future.

ETA. Everyone definately has the right idea about taking your time and going at a pace that's comfortable for you. Just remember that when the comfortable pace becomes too comfortable, push just a little harder, but don't overdo.

Exactly, I also exercise regulary and would jog at 4.5-5.0 for about 45 minutes, I did that for a while 5 to 6 times a week, and no weight loss. I didn't even break a sweat or breathe heavy. It wasn't until I bumped it up to 5.5-6.0 (months later) that I started noticing weight loss. So it's important that you challenge your body, or it'll get used to it.

Poohbear does the treadmill you use have those different programs on it? I know the one I use has a hill one and random, where it takes you up and down in incline and you set it at the speed you want.

For example, if I set the highest speed for 4.2mph on an interval program, weight loss, or CV program, the incline would be 8.0 which is too high for me. And when it changes interval, it will be like 2mph at a very low incline. :ohwell:
I just like to use the Manual program on treadmills to go my own pace and inclines. ;)

I walk between 4-4.5 mph. I would start jogging after 4.5 mph. Walking that fast really taxes my legs, and my thighs tingle for a good 10 minutes after I finish working out. (If I don't get the tingle, I feel like I didn't do a darn thing!)

I read in self that it is better to walk at 4.5 mph than jog at that speed because you're burning more fat calories doing a power walk than a slow jog. HTH.

When I am walking on a treadmill, I go 4.3-4.6 on a steep (8-15 inches) incline.

When I am jogging, I go 5.5.-6.0 on a 4.0 incline.

8.0 incline at 4.2  Yeah you better keep it on manual and do your thing. Just listen to your body :yep:

I like to walk on 4.0 then do pick up the pace for 2-3 minute intervals throught out the workout. So I will walk on 4.0 for 5 min then in crease to 5.0-5.5 for 2-3 min then back to 4.0 when I get back to 4.0 I increase the incline to 5.

Incline and sprints has made all the difference. I sweat like a pig in 30 minutes. You have to use the times that work for you. Then challenge yourself.

Note: I recently read in my fitness magazines that it is better to walk or jog on at least incline of 0.5-1.0. Jogging on flat is not good for the body.
