I work out once a day, from 45 minutes to 1 hour.

I read somewhere that doing cardio for more than 30 minutes is a waste of time. So . . . , I was thinking of doing 30 minutes of cardio 3 times a day (am, mid-day and pm). Is that too much?

M-F I try to fit in two 30-45 min sessions per day, on the weekends I try to do at least 30 min of something 1st thing in the morning. There have been days when I worked out in the morning, at lunch and after work.

My goal is 2x a day for 45 min., at least 6 days a week. On Monday and Tuesday I was only able to do 1 45 minute workout and yesterday, I had to do 1 90 minute workout. I'd like to burn about 1000 calories with exercise 6x a week.

I've read this too which is why I usually cut my workouts in half instead of doing it all at once. right now I'm doing 40 minute steady state cardio sessions split like 30/10 or 20/20. I also do HIIT cardio no more than 15 minutes. 6-8 times a week or so.

some info:

* A typical workout session should last 20-30 minutes. Making it easier to consistently work out.
* It actually does the body more harm than good, to work out for long periods of time. When you exercise more than 45 minutes, the body begins to produce increased amounts of cortisol, which triggers muscle breakdown.
* High levels of cortisol are known to be the cause of:

o Decreased bone density.
o Increased blood pressure.
o Inhibition of the immune system.
o Muscle wasting.
o Insulin resistance.
o Increased body fat levels.

* When exercise is combined with an improper diet:

o Blood sugar fluctuations can elevate cortisol.
o Excessive carbohydrates can elevate cortisol.
o Protein deficiency can elevate cortisol.
o Eating too little can cause cortisol to rise.
o During times of stress, cortisol is elevated.

* Cortisol is able to overpower just about all other hormones in the body.
* Cortisol can cause accumulation of body fat even if you think you are doing all the right things correctly.
* Cortisol will block HGH from doing its job.

I think 3 times a day is going to burn you out. I'd go for less times a day, more times a week. You could also incorporate HIIT cardio for a more efficient workout in less time. I'd also strength train too because all of that cardio is going to eat up muscle as well.

Are there HIIT cardio videos??

mkstar826

not that i know of. it's not really something you need a video for. you just add timed higher bursts of intensity to your regular cardio.

example of what i do:
*get on the elliptical and warm up for 5 minutes.
*when minute 6 starts i go as hard as I can for 20 seconds
*then i recover for 40 seconds at a moderate pace
*once minute 7 comes i go as hard as i can again for 20 seconds and recover again for 40
*i do this for no more than 15 mintues, anything longer than 20 minutes is not HIIT because it would be impossible to give your all past that.

it essentially keeps your body from falling into a steady state like you get with regular cardio. it keeps your body guessing so that you're always working at the highest potential for high calorie burn. so you get a more efficient workout in less time.

6 days a week. 3 20 min HIIT sessions and 3 weight training sessions plus one 30 to 45 min steady state cardio session. I alternate days and do the longer cardio session on my upper body weight day after weights.

What does HIIT stand for? Is it High Impact Interval Training (just a guess)? And, thanks for all of the good info!

I am trying to loose about 50 pounds and feel a little dumfounded with all of the workout options. This is the heaviest I have ever been and I am NOT happy about it. I know that cardio is a good way to get things going, so I wanted to start there.

Usually I workout 5-6 days a week for about 45 min, one time a day. But I just started my own perosnal challenge for july so i'm aimimg to workout everyday this month. I slacked off big time the past couple months and it has led to a 15lb weight gain. So I am jumping back on the bandwagon in a big way
