I have combination skin and I find I have to blot my nose every 2 hours, I was considering using an oil mattifier over my moisturiser, I guess they are supposed to control shine. Do any of you use one and what brands do you recommend?

TIA

Bumping for responses.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm great question. I never heard of a mattifier. I thought for us oily/combo skin people our only options for oil was to use those Oil blotting sheets or just re-apply the powder every so often.

So what brands make a good mattifier? Does MAC make one?

I use the one from MAC but I think it may get discontinued cuz they are coming out with something else. It is sold out on the site. I also use the one by SMashbox. I think its called Photofinish Primer or something like that and I got that one from Sephora. The little one is $14 and the big one is $34 or $38.

I have tried liquid mattifiers in the past I think it was by Philosophy or Mac. It did nothing for my then oily skin. My skin is no longer oily like that but occasionally I will blot with blotting tissues on my nose or Smashbox has a great product that I just tap on my nose and any shine is gone.

I use the proactive "daily oil control" once or twice a day, works well. As far as mattefying (sp) makeup, I just started using this (http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/products/sp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY15107&PRODUCT_ID=PROD1508)

yes, I use one. in the summer my skin is like an oil slick. I have tried everything, and I mean everything!! I finally found something that works.
Believe it or not, it Mary Kay mattifying lotion. I use it whenever I need it on top of my makeup. sometime I use it instead of a moisturizer, it's wonderful

I use The Present by Philosophy (Sephora $20) every morning over my oil-free moisturizer. It works pretty well but you need to blend well to avoid white streaks. I also touch-up in the afternoons with Clean and Clear Blotting sheets (drugstore). HTH.

I gave up on mattifiers and just use blotting tissues or tissues and other items to physically absorb oil.

Well, like a lot of Moisturizers with SPF, it left me with a whitish film and my face wasn't even all that matte in appearance. I could feel it on my face, if that makes any sense. I bought it at Bath and Body Works for $35! I wonder what their return policy is. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend this. ETA: I never paid attention to see if it controlled my oily skin throughout the day.. like if my skin looked less oily than usual. I may try it again to see if it helped at all. I could wear it under makeup, as soon as I find the right shade of foundation.

I did try a product from the Body Shop years ago that was great. I don't remember what it was called and I don't know if they still make it. But it was in a gel form and contained silicone.

I had a VERYoily T-panel. To reduce the shine I used fuller’s earth/ sandlewood powders as a mask (at night) on the T panel only. I mix the fuller’s earth/sandlewood powders with rose water to make a paste. I initially did this nightly, alternating between the two for approx 2.5 weeks. I now only apply twice a week only. These two natural products have WORKED GREAT. I now only need to apply loose powder or some days NOTHING at all.

For those who are interested the fuller’s earth/ sandlewood powders and rose water can be found at any Indian grocery shop. Indian women always rave about these products and the above routine i used was based on the advise of a wonderful Indian lady i know who owns a beauty shop

Hi Sithembile,

The product brands as you requested

I have just typed out what is on the boxes of the products. From what I have been told brands are not really important as long as it’s the natural product since its just really packed and branded to sell the product. Both the sandlewood and Fuller’s earth are natural products.

Sandlewood powder – made by : Nitya Herbs – name of product: Keshudha Chandan fragrance

How to use: Take the required qty of powder in a ceramic bowel (I used a small plastic bowel) and rose water to make a thin paste. Apply on the face. Keep it for 20 to 30 min – till it dries. Wash off with warm/cold water.

Fuller’s Earth – made by: Hesh – name of product: Multani Mati powder –Ayurvedic medicine, www.heshherbal.com

How to use: same as above, except you rinse it out with cold water.

Another natural product that I have recently started using which I love-
Shama herbal face pack -Made by: Himalayian herbal research center

This is a face mask that can be used twice a week. It contains rose petals, saffron, multani mati, sandlewood, upptan and turmeric. I dunno what upptan is but this mask makes my skin GLOW. It tingles for a few seconds when you apply it. Since it comes in powder form you, mix with water but I prefer to mix with rose water. rinse off with cold water.

You should be able to get all these products( including the rosewater) in an Indian store that sells herbs and spices. Just try them and you will see for your self.
